Buying steel structures in Bangladesh

A steel structure is a frame of rolled sections or welded plate, bolted or welded together: portal frame sheds, warehouses, roof trusses and prefabricated buildings. In Bangladesh, factory owners, warehouse developers and contractors order them because steel can be erected as soon as the parts arrive. Bangladesh also exports a modest amount of structures and prefabricated buildings.

Two fabricators can quote the same floor area with very different steel weights, grades and coatings. Roptan briefs a verified steel structure manufacturer in Bangladesh on your drawings, or on stated loads and code, collects quotes on the same basis, checks steel certificates, welding and coating during fabrication, and delivers the parts with erection drawings.

Kinds of steel structure

Portal frame sheds

Columns and rafters with rigid joints, so each frame acts as one unit, and a sloping roof of purlins and sheeting between frames. The usual form for warehouses and factory sheds.

Clear span buildings

No columns inside the floor area. Choose it for hangars, sports halls and stores where columns get in the way; it usually costs more than a building with interior columns.

Multiple span buildings

Interior columns divide the width into bays, which usually costs less for the same floor area. Choose it where the layout can live with a column grid.

Trusses and open-web joists

Triangulated members working in tension and compression, for long roof spans and long-bay buildings that combine frames with joists to get larger openings.

Prefabricated buildings

Parts assembled in the shop before shipment, so site work is mostly bolting. Larger buildings still need a skilled erection crew, so settle who erects in the quote.

How to brief a steel structure manufacturer in Bangladesh

Size and layout
Width, length, eave height and roof slope, clear span or interior columns, doors, and any crane or mezzanine the frame must carry.
Loads and code
Roof and wind loads, designed to BNBC 2020, and who designs: your engineer or the fabricator, with calculations you can review.
Steel grade
For example S275 or S355 to EN 10025-2, where the number is yield strength in MPa, or ASTM A36 for shapes and plate.
Sections and joints
Hot-rolled, cold-formed or built up from welded plate; bolted or welded joints; hollow sections to EN 10219-1 or EN 10210-1.
Corrosion protection
Hot-dip galvanising to EN ISO 1461:2022 or a paint system to ISO 12944 for the site's corrosivity category, with designs that do not trap water.
Fire protection
A separate item, since steel loses strength and stiffness at fire temperatures. Say whether the quote covers it.

Steel grades, coatings and certificates

EN 10025-2
Delivery conditions for hot-rolled non-alloy structural steels, the S235, S275 and S355 families. Ask for EN 10204 type 3.1 certificates for plate and sections.
EN ISO 1461:2022
Hot-dip galvanised coatings on fabricated iron and steel articles. EN ISO 14713-2 gives design guidance for parts to be galvanised.
ISO 12944
Paint systems for steel structures: Part 2 sets atmospheric corrosivity categories, Part 5 describes paint systems by environment and durability.
EN 1090-1
CE marking of structural steelwork in the EU, which needs the fabricator's factory production control assessed. Ask for it only when the building goes to Europe.

What moves the price of a steel structure

  • Steel weight per square metre of floor, and the steel grade.
  • Span: a clear span usually costs more than a building with interior columns.
  • Connections and plate thickness: more welded or bolted joints mean more shop hours.
  • Protection: galvanising, a multi-coat paint system or fire protection.
  • Erection: whether the fabricator's crew erects, and the site's access and height.

Lead times and delivery

Time runs from drawing approval, not from the order. Design changes, plate or sections not in stock, galvanising queues and the erection scope all make it longer; a repeat design with stock steel makes it shorter. Roptan confirms the fabrication and delivery dates, and any minimum, in the quote.

Parts arrive by truck, piece-marked to the erection drawings, with bolts packed by connection. Erection is by the seller's crew or your contractor, as agreed in the quote. You receive the drawings, steel certificates, coating records and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying steel structures for export

Exports are modest: the EPB recorded about 4.4 million US dollars of HS 7308 structures and about 2.5 million US dollars of HS 9406 prefabricated buildings in FY2025-26. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram, with parts piece-marked, bolts crated, EN 10204 3.1 certificates, a packing list by piece and a REX origin statement for EU GSP.

What we check for this order

  • Design basisWe check that the drawings state the loads, the code and the steel grade before fabrication starts.
  • Steel certificatesWe match EN 10204 3.1 certificates for plate and sections to the grade on the drawings.
  • CoatingWe take coating thickness readings on galvanised or painted parts and check that welding was done before galvanising.
  • Piece marks and boltsWe check that every part carries its erection mark and that bolts are counted against the connection list.

Questions buyers ask

Should I pay for a clear span?

Only if columns would get in the way, as in hangars and sports halls. A building with interior columns usually costs less for the same floor area. Ask the fabricator to price both and compare steel weight per square metre.

Galvanised or painted steel?

Galvanising bonds zinc to the steel in a bath of molten zinc at about 450 C, coats hollow sections inside and out, and repairs small scratches by itself. Paint systems to ISO 12944 are chosen by corrosivity category. Weld before galvanising, since welding galvanised steel gives off toxic zinc fumes.

Why choose steel over concrete for a factory?

Speed on site is the usual reason. Steel parts can be erected as soon as they are delivered, while concrete needs at least one to two weeks to cure. Prefabricated parts are assembled in the shop, so less work happens on site.

Is fire protection included?

Not unless the quote says so. Steel loses strength and stiffness at fire temperatures, so a building that needs a fire rating needs a protection system added to the frame. Name the requirement in the brief so every fabricator prices it.

How soon will I hear back about steel and metal products?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
