Buying steel bars and rods in Bangladesh

Steel bar and rod here means ribbed (deformed) bar for reinforcing concrete, sold straight, in coil or de-coiled. Bangladesh's re-rolling and integrated mills meet home demand, and some export to neighbouring countries. Contractors, developers and public projects buy it. Grade 275 was the norm until the 1980s, grade 420 came in the 1990s and grade 500 in 2008.

Kinds of steel bar and rod

500 MPa bar (B500DWR, B500CWR)

Made locally since 2008 and traded as 72.5 grade or Fe-500. The letter after 500 is the ductility class: D needs a tensile to yield ratio of at least 1.25, C at least 1.15.

Grade 420 bar (60 grade)

Minimum yield of 420 MPa, the metric match for ASTM A615 Grade 60, where 60 means 60 ksi. Choose it where the drawings call for 60 grade.

Weldable bar (ASTM A706)

Low-alloy bar with controlled chemistry, made to be welded. Local mills usually offer it for large and seismic structures. Choose it where splices or cages are welded, not tied.

550 and 600 MPa bar

Some mills offer 550 MPa bar for large and mega projects, and 600 MPa grades such as B600C-R. Order them only when the design names them.

Coated bar

Epoxy-coated, galvanised or stainless bar for marine and salty conditions, at a higher first cost. Damaged epoxy loses its protection, and coated bar is tied with wire of the same coating.

How to brief a steel bar and rod manufacturer in Bangladesh

Grade and standard: The grade, with the current edition of BDS ISO 6935-2, stated in the order, or ASTM A615 or A706 where the design uses US codes.
Strength and ductility: Tested yield at or above the rated strength but not more than 125 MPa above it, the tensile to yield ratio, and elongation on a 200 mm gauge length.
Sizes and weight basis: Tonnes per diameter, and actual or theoretical weight. Metric masses: 10 mm 0.617, 12 mm 0.888, 16 mm 1.58, 20 mm 2.47, 25 mm 3.85 kg per metre.
Tests per lot: Unit weight per metre, yield and ultimate strength, elongation, the bend test and a measurement of the rib pattern.
Welding: For welded bar, ASTM A706 or a carbon equivalent per heat: below 0.55 can be welded, other bar generally needs special measures.

Standards, certificates and tests for rebar

BDS ISO 6935-2: Bangladesh's adoption, through BSTI, of the ISO standard for ribbed bars in concrete. Order to the current edition of BDS ISO 6935-2, stated in the order.
ASTM A615 and A706: US rebar standards some local mills also roll to: A615 for carbon steel bar such as Grade 60, A706 for low-alloy weldable bar.
EN 10204 type 3.1: The maker's declaration that the bars meet the order, with chemical and mechanical results. Ask for one per heat.
Independent lab tests: Bars not made to BSTI standards have been reported locally, so test a sample per lot before use.

What moves the price of steel bar and rod

World scrap prices, since imported scrap is the mills' key raw material, plus duty and advance income tax on it.
The season: winter is the peak for building, and monthly demand drops in lean periods.
Government project spending, on top of private building demand.
Coating: epoxy-coated, galvanised and stainless bars cost more at first than plain bar.
Weight basis: paying theoretical weight for bars rolled light means paying for steel you never receive.

Lead times and delivery

Time depends on whether your grade and sizes are in stock, on special grades or coating, on the winter building peak and on any outside lab test before dispatch. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum tonnage in the quote, once the mill has confirmed them.

Bars go by truck in tagged bundles; each tag carries a heat number that should match a certificate, and the load is weighed on a weighbridge so actual and theoretical tonnes can be compared. You receive the certificates, any lab reports, weighbridge slips and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying steel bars and rods for export

Some Bangladeshi mills export rebar to neighbouring countries: the EPB recorded about 12.5 million US dollars of HS 7214 bars and rods in FY2025-26. Questions buyers ask

What is the difference between B500DWR and B500CWR?

Both are 500 MPa weldable ribbed bars; D and C are ductility classes. B500DWR needs a tensile to yield ratio of at least 1.25, B500CWR at least 1.15, so D bar keeps more reserve before failure. Use the class your designer specifies.

Can I weld rebar on site?

Only the right bar. ASTM A706 bar is made for welding. Other bar is generally unsuitable unless its carbon equivalent is known; below 0.55 it can be welded. Ask for the carbon equivalent of each heat, and have your engineer approve welded splices.

What rebar should I use near the sea?

Concrete cover normally keeps steel from rusting, but rust takes more room than steel and cracks the concrete. In marine or salty conditions designers use epoxy-coated, galvanised or stainless bar at a higher first cost, and tie it with wire of the same coating.

Why does the rod price change so often?

Imported scrap is the mills' key raw material, so world scrap prices pass into rod prices, with scrap duty, the building season and government spending. The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh tracks 60-grade rod prices. Roptan's quote states grade and weight basis, so it compares cleanly.
