Buying galvanised wire in Bangladesh

Galvanised wire is steel wire drawn from hot-rolled wire rod and coated with zinc, which protects the steel by corroding first. In Bangladesh contractors buy it as binding wire for rebar cages, and builders, factories and hardware wholesalers buy barbed wire, chain-link fencing and mesh. Demand is domestic: rod mills supply the feed, and wire workshops draw and coat it.

Thin zinc and an undersized diameter look the same as the real thing on a coil. Roptan puts diameter, tolerance, coating and strength into one brief for a verified galvanised wire manufacturer in Bangladesh, compares quotes on that basis, has samples measured and tested from each lot, and delivers tagged coils.

Kinds of galvanised wire

Binding wire

Soft, annealed galvanised wire in coils for tying rebar cages. Galvanised bars are tied with galvanised wire, so the coating matches. Choose it by diameter and softness.

Barbed wire

Single strand for light duty, double strand as the usual build, with 2-point or 4-point barbs and conventional or reverse twist. Galvanised wire is the usual steel wire for it.

Chain-link fencing

Wire bent over a rotating flat blade into a flattened spiral, each one wound through the last to form the zigzag mesh. Usually galvanised or polymer-coated.

Gabion and hexagonal mesh

Box-shaped gabions of galvanised, stainless or PVC-coated hexagonal mesh for civil engineering work. EN 10223-3 sets their dimensions, coatings and tests.

Alloy and polymer-coated wire

Zinc-aluminium alloy with 5 or 10 percent aluminium, or PVC or PE over the zinc. Choose these for coastal air or aggressive soil, where plain zinc lasts less.

How to brief a galvanised wire manufacturer in Bangladesh

Diameter and tolerance
State the diameter in mm with its tolerance, not a gauge alone. On the usual gauge table, 12.5 gauge is 2.51 mm and 14 gauge is 2.03 mm.
Coating process
Hot-dip galvanising forms zinc-iron alloy layers bonded to the steel; electro-galvanising lays a thinner, brighter zinc coat. Name the process you will accept.
Coating mass
Name the coating class from EN 10244-2:2023 and ask for a coating mass result per lot, since zinc thickness sets life outdoors.
Strength and softness
Give the tensile strength range. Wire drawn hard is strong but stiff; an anneal makes it soft enough for binding.
Form and packing
Plain coil, barbed, chain-link or mesh, with barb spacing or mesh opening, roll length and the coil weight your crew can handle.
Site exposure
Say if the wire goes near the sea or into wet or aggressive soil, so the seller can offer alloy or polymer coating.

Standards and tests for galvanised wire

EN 10244-2:2023
Coating mass, other properties and testing of zinc and zinc alloy coatings on steel wire and wire products. Name the class in the order.
EN 10218-2
Tolerances on the diameter of round wire, bright or coated, where the product standard sets none of its own.
EN ISO 6892-1
The tensile test for metallic materials at room temperature. Ask for tensile results on a sample from each lot.
EN 10223-3
Hexagonal steel wire mesh for civil engineering, such as gabions: dimensions, coatings, test method and delivery conditions.

What moves the price of galvanised wire

  • The coating: plain zinc, a zinc-aluminium alloy, or a PVC or PE layer over the zinc.
  • The process: hot-dip galvanising or the thinner electro-galvanised coat.
  • Drawing: finer wire needs more passes, and large reductions need an intermediate anneal.
  • Form: barbed wire, chain-link and gabion mesh each add making steps to plain coil.
  • Wire rod, the feed drawn into wire, bought from the rod mills.

Lead times and delivery

Plain coil in a common diameter and coating is quicker than an unusual diameter, a heavy coating class, alloy or polymer coating, or barbed wire and mesh made to your pattern. Lab tests on a sample add time before dispatch. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum quantity in the quote.

Coils and rolls go by truck, each tagged with diameter, coating and weight, and bundles are weighed where wire is sold by the tonne. Mesh and barbed wire come in rolls of the agreed length. You receive the test results, a packing list and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

What we check for this order

  • DiameterWe measure diameter at several points on sample coils against the tolerance written into the order.
  • Coating massWe check the coating mass result for each lot against the EN 10244-2:2023 class ordered.
  • Tensile strengthWe have a sample tensile tested, so binding wire is soft enough and fence wire strong enough.
  • Coil tags and weightWe check that each tag shows diameter, coating and weight, and that coil weights add up to the invoice.

Questions buyers ask

Hot-dip or electro-galvanised wire: which do I need?

Usually hot-dip for outdoor use. Its zinc-iron layers bond with the steel, and the zinc protects it by corroding first. Electro-galvanising gives a thinner, brighter coat. Coating mass, not shine, sets outdoor life, so put the class in the order.

What is 14 gauge in mm?

About 2.03 mm on the usual gauge table; 12.5 gauge is about 2.51 mm and 16.5 gauge about 1.47 mm. Gauge tables differ, so order by diameter in mm with a tolerance, and we measure samples against it.

What wire should I use near the sea?

Salt air shortens zinc life. For coastal sites or aggressive soil, ask for wire with a zinc-aluminium alloy coating or with PVC or PE over the zinc, or stainless wire. Say where the wire will go, and the seller can suggest a coating.

Can galvanised wire be welded into mesh?

Yes, but welding galvanised wire gives off toxic zinc fumes, so the work needs good ventilation. Ask how the mesh is welded and whether the welds are coated afterwards.

How soon will I hear back about steel and metal products?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?

With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
