Buying cast iron articles in Bangladesh
Cast iron articles are parts poured from molten iron into moulds, usually sand moulds: manhole covers and frames, gully gratings, pipe fittings, counterweights and cookware. Contractors, utilities, factories and kitchenware traders in Bangladesh buy them, and a small amount is exported. Foundries melt the iron in cupola or induction furnaces, and the melt chemistry sets the grade.
A grey iron cover and a ductile one look alike, but only one takes a heavy wheel without cracking. Roptan writes the iron grade, load class and dimensions into one brief for a verified cast iron article manufacturer in Bangladesh, compares quotes on that basis, checks test results, weight and fit, and delivers.
How to brief a cast iron article manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Iron and grade
- Grey iron to EN 1561 by tensile strength or hardness, or ductile iron to EN 1563 or ISO 1083, with the grade written out.
- Load class and family
- For covers, the EN 124 class. Gratings for drainage channels fall under EN 1433 and floor gullies inside buildings under EN 1253-1, so say which it is.
- Size and weight
- Clear opening, frame size and depth, and the weight per piece, with a drawing or a sample for anything made to pattern.
- Seating
- Bearing surfaces of frame and cover machined flat, so the cover does not rock or lift under traffic.
- Melt and certificate
- Ask for carbon and silicon, and magnesium treatment for ductile iron, on the material certificate for each melt.
- Finish and food contact
- The coating or finish, and for cookware bare, seasoned or enamelled, with a lead and cadmium release report on enamel for export.
Standards and test reports for castings
- EN 124-1 and EN 124-2
- Gully tops and manhole tops up to 1,000 mm clear opening: classes, design, performance and tests, with Part 2 for grey and ductile iron. The class number is the test load in kN.
- EN 1561
- Grey cast irons, graded by the tensile strength of cast samples or by hardness. Cite the current 2023 edition.
- EN 1563 and ISO 1083
- Spheroidal graphite (ductile) cast irons, graded by mechanical properties measured on machined test pieces.
- Enamel release report
- For enamelled cookware sold abroad, a lab report on lead and cadmium release, since enamel pigments may contain cadmium.
Lead times and delivery
Time depends on whether a pattern exists: a new pattern for your drawing adds time before the first pour, while repeat items on an existing pattern move faster. Ductile iron, load tests, machining and enamel add steps. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum quantity in the quote.
Covers travel as matched sets on pallets or in stacks, with frames and covers marked so they stay paired. Cookware is boxed. You receive the material certificates, any load test report, a packing list with piece weights and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying cast iron articles for export
Bangladesh exports a small amount of cast articles: the EPB recorded about 0.95 million US dollars of HS 7325, other cast articles of iron or steel, in FY2025-26. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram on pallets, with material certificates, load test reports for covers, a lead and cadmium release report for enamelled cookware, and a certificate of origin.
Questions buyers ask
Grey or ductile iron for manhole covers?
Ductile iron where heavy wheels or shock are expected. Its graphite forms nodules, so it resists impact and fatigue much better than grey iron. Grey iron is strong in compression and suits frames and covers away from heavy traffic.
What EN 124 class do I need?
The one your engineer names for the location. EN 124 runs from A15, for areas used only by pedestrians and cyclists, to F900, for docks and airports, and the number is the test load in kN. Put the class on the order and ask for the load test report.
Bare or enamelled cast iron cookware?
Bare iron holds high heat for searing and slow cooking, but must be seasoned and can pass a lot of iron into acidic food. Enamelled iron does not rust and needs no seasoning. For export, ask for a lead and cadmium release report on the enamel.
Does EN 124 cover drainage channel gratings?
No. Gratings of prefabricated drainage channels follow EN 1433, and floor and roof gullies inside buildings follow EN 1253-1. EN 124 is for gully tops and manhole tops. Say which family your item belongs to, so the seller tests to the right standard.
How soon will I hear back about steel and metal products?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
