Buying solar cables in Bangladesh

Solar cable is the single-core cable that links PV modules into strings and strings to the inverter on the DC side, rated up to 1.5 kV DC and made to live in sun, heat and rain. Rooftop installers, factories adding solar and the contractors who build solar parks buy it. As of 2024, about 459 MW came from ten solar plants in Bangladesh.

A PV plant is built to run for decades, and its cable has to keep up. Roptan takes your string schedule to a verified solar cable manufacturer in Bangladesh, asks for its EN 50618 or IEC 62930 certificate before quoting, checks the reports and delivers to site. You deal with one contact, or post the need on our requirement board.

Kinds of solar cable

Halogen-free low-smoke PV cable

Insulation and sheath without halogens, so the cable gives less dense smoke and corrosive gas in a fire. Choose it for rooftops over occupied buildings and for enclosed inverter rooms.

PV cable that may contain halogens

IEC 62930 also allows compounds with halogens. Choose it only for open ground-mount runs where your specification permits it, and say so in the order.

EN 50618 cable

Made to the European PV cable standard, in use since December 2014. Choose it when the tender, the module maker or a European lender names it.

IEC 62930 cable

Made to the international PV cable standard of 2017. Choose it for projects that follow IEC rules throughout, or for equipment sold in several markets.

What to ask a solar cable manufacturer in Bangladesh

Standard and rating
Name one standard, EN 50618 or IEC 62930, and the 1.5 kV DC rating, so every certificate and marking is checked against the same text.
Temperature
IEC 62930 cable runs at 90 °C continuously at the conductor and can take 120 °C for up to 20,000 hours. Ask for that on the data sheet.
Halogen content
State halogen-free low-smoke or allowed halogens. The standard covers both, so a quote that does not say which may not match your tender.
Size
Give the cross-section for each string run from your designer's calculation. PV wiring falls under section 712 of the IEC 60364 series.
Site conditions
Bangladesh brings strong sun, high heat and monsoon rain, so roof and ground strings need UV resistance and the stated temperature class.
Lengths and colours
List each run, the drum lengths you want and any colour split for positive and negative, so the cable arrives cut to the layout.

Standards and certificates for solar cable

IEC 62930:2017
Electric cables for PV systems at 1.5 kV DC: single-core, cross-linked insulation and sheath, for the DC side and Class II equipment. Edition 1.0, current.
EN 50618
The European PV cable standard, in use since December 2014 and still current. It remains applicable beside IEC 62930, so ask which one the certificate names.
IEC 60332-1-2:2025
The vertical flame test on a single insulated cable, behind a flame retardant claim on a PV cable data sheet.
IEC 60754-1 and IEC 61034-2
Halogen acid gas and smoke density tests. A cable sold as halogen-free low-smoke should come with both reports.

What moves the price of solar cable

  • Copper: quotes usually follow the metal price, so a fixed price on a long project carries copper risk.
  • Size: a larger cross-section puts more copper into every metre.
  • Certification: a certificate to EN 50618 or IEC 62930 from an accredited body costs the maker, and that usually shows in the price.
  • Testing: fire, gas or resistance tests on your own lot add cost.
  • Lengths: drums cut to each string run usually cost more than standard drums.

Lead times and delivery

Cable held in stock to a common standard usually leaves sooner than a halogen-free type, a cable that must be imported or an order cut to many string lengths. Certificate checks and tests on your lot add time, and a copper move can reopen the price. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum per size in the quote.

Roptan delivers drums to rooftops, factories and solar park sites across Bangladesh, with drum numbers and lengths on a packing list. Laying, connectors and the DC tests are done by your installer or the seller, as the quote states. You receive the PV cable certificate, the test reports for the lot and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

What we check for this order

  • PV cable certificateWe check a certificate to EN 50618 or IEC 62930 from an accredited body for the same construction and rating as your cable.
  • Marking on the sheathThe printed marking must name the standard and the 1.5 kV DC rating, matching the certificate.
  • Conductor resistanceSamples from your drums are measured against the resistance limit for the size, so an undersized conductor is found.
  • Fire and halogen reportsWhere you ordered halogen-free low-smoke cable, we ask for the flame, halogen gas and smoke density reports.

Questions buyers ask

Can PVC building wire be used for PV strings?

No. PVC building wire under IEC 60227 is rated for AC installations up to 450/750 V, while PV strings run on DC and fall under IEC 62930 at up to 1.5 kV DC. Building wire is outside the scope of a PV cable standard, so ask for certified solar cable for every string run.

Should I ask for EN 50618 or IEC 62930?

Either is current. EN 50618 is European, in use since 2014; IEC 62930 is the international standard of 2017, and the two sit side by side. Name the one your tender, module maker or lender uses, and keep it the same across every certificate and drum.

Does solar cable need a BSTI mark?

BSTI's mandatory list covers PV modules and batteries for renewable energy storage, but we found no entry for solar cable on it. Ask BSTI if in doubt. For this cable the proof of quality is a certificate to EN 50618 or IEC 62930, not a BSTI mark.

How hot can solar cable run?

Under IEC 62930, 90 °C continuously at the conductor, with up to 20,000 hours at 120 °C over its life. On a dark roof in a Bangladeshi summer, that margin matters. Ask the maker to state both figures on the data sheet.

How soon will I hear back about cables and wires?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
