Buying flexible cords in Bangladesh

A flexible cord is a cable made to bend in use: the lead from a wall socket to a fan, an iron or a machine, or the cable of an extension lead, with a conductor of fine copper strands. Appliance and fan makers, machine builders, wholesalers and extension lead assemblers buy it from the more than 120 firms that make cable and wire in Bangladesh.

A cord is flexed, pulled and stepped on every day, so thin copper or weak insulation shows up as heat and cracks. Roptan takes your order to a verified flexible cord manufacturer in Bangladesh, checks the BSTI licences for the cord and any plug or socket, has samples measured and delivers. You deal with one contact, or post the need on our board.

Kinds of flexible cord

PVC-insulated cord

PVC insulation and sheath over flexible copper, to IEC 60227 or BDS 899 Part 3. Choose it for indoor appliances, fans and light tools that are not dragged across rough floors.

Rubber-insulated cord

Rubber insulation and sheath, to IEC 60245 or BDS 899 Part 2. It is the usual choice over PVC for hard use: workshop tools, machines that move and leads that are often handled.

Cord sets

A cord with connectors moulded on, one male and one female, detachable from both the supply and the equipment. Choose it for appliances and equipment sold with a removable lead.

Extension leads

Flexible cord with a plug on one end and one or more sockets on the other. Choose the cord size for the load the sockets will carry, not for the plug.

What to tell a flexible cord manufacturer in Bangladesh

Standard
Name the IEC 60227 part for PVC cord, IEC 60245 for rubber cord, or the BDS 899 part, so insulation and sheath limits are fixed.
Cores and size
Give the number of cores and the conductor size in mm². The size sets the current a cord can carry, so state the load as well.
Sheath
PVC for light indoor use, rubber for hard use and rough handling. Say where the cord will lie and how often it moves.
Plug and socket
For cord sets and extension leads, give the plug and socket type for the market they are sold in.
Heat
Bangladesh is hot and humid, and heat lowers a conductor's current rating. Cords near hot machines need a size in hand.
Length and packing
State the length per lead or per coil, the tolerance, and whether you want coils, reels or cut and packed leads.

Standards and approvals for flexible cord

IEC 60227-1:2024
General rules for PVC-insulated rigid and flexible cables up to 450/750 V, edition 4.0; the cord types are in Parts 3 to 7. The 2007 edition is withdrawn.
IEC 60245-1:2026
The rubber-insulated counterpart up to 450/750 V, edition 5.0, published in March 2026. Say which edition your records may cite.
BDS 899 Parts 1 to 6 (BSTI)
Insulated flexible cords are on BSTI's mandatory certification list: general requirements, rubber, PVC, glass fibre, PVC extensible leads and test methods.
BDS IEC 60884-2-7:2016 (BSTI)
Plugs and socket-outlets, including cord extension sets, are also under mandatory marks, so an extension lead needs both approvals.
IEC 60332-1-2:2025
The vertical flame test on a single insulated wire or cable, called up by the cord standards.

What moves the price of flexible cord

  • Copper: raw materials are usually 70 to 80 percent of a local maker's cost, so quotes move with copper.
  • Fine strands: a flexible conductor usually takes more drawing and stranding work than solid wire.
  • Plugs and sockets: a cord set or extension lead adds a licensed plug and socket, moulding and tests.
  • Cut and packed leads: cutting, stripping, labels and retail packs usually cost more than plain coils.
  • Tests: resistance tests on your samples or an outside lab report add cost.

Lead times and delivery

Common PVC cords held in stock usually leave sooner than rubber cord, unusual core counts or cord sets that need moulding and connector supply. A licence check on the plug and socket, tests on your samples and retail packing each add time. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum per size in the quote.

Roptan delivers coils, reels or packed leads to appliance plants, wholesalers and stores across Bangladesh. Each delivery comes with a packing list by type and length, the test records for the lot, copies of the BSTI licences for the cord and for any plug or socket, and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

What we check for this order

  • Two BSTI licences where neededWe check the licence for BDS 899 and, for extension leads, the licence for BDS IEC 60884-2-7, both in the seller's name.
  • Conductor resistanceSamples from your lot are measured against the IEC 60228 limit for a flexible copper conductor of that size.
  • Strands and sheathWe strip a sample to count the strands and confirm the PVC or rubber sheath you ordered.
  • Editions and flame testTest records must name the current IEC 60227-1 or IEC 60245-1 edition, or BDS 899, and include the flame test.

Questions buyers ask

Should I choose PVC or rubber cord?

PVC for appliances, fans and light tools indoors, where the cord lies still most of the time. Rubber for hard use: tools dragged across a workshop floor, machines that move and leads plugged in all day. Both series run up to 450/750 V and each cord type carries its own rating, so state the voltage you need; the difference between PVC and rubber is how they stand up to handling.

Do extension leads need BSTI approval?

Yes, twice over. Insulated flexible cords to BDS 899 are on BSTI's mandatory certification list, and so are plugs and socket-outlets, including cord extension sets, to BDS IEC 60884-2-7:2016. We check both licences before we quote an extension lead.

Why does an extension lead get hot on a reel?

A coiled cord cannot shed its heat, so under load its temperature climbs and the insulation can fail, a serious shock and fire risk. Unwind the reel fully before heavy use. When you order, size the cord for the full load of every socket, not for one appliance.

Can you supply cords with moulded plugs?

Yes. A cord set has connectors moulded on, usually one male and one female, so it detaches from both the supply and the appliance. Send the plug and connector types, length and cord size, and we source from a maker that moulds them and holds the plug and socket licence.

How soon will I hear back about cables and wires?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?

With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
