Buying power cables in Bangladesh

Power cable carries current from a transformer or generator to switchboards, motors and buildings, and from substation to substation on the distribution network. Utilities, factories, developers and electrical contractors are the buyers. Most of it is made locally; one 2026 analysis put imports at about 20 to 25 percent of the market, mainly extra-high-voltage, marine and specialised industrial cable.

A feeder that fails underground costs far more than the cable did. Roptan takes your schedule to a verified power cable manufacturer in Bangladesh, checks that its BSTI licence covers the standard and voltage, matches test sheets to your drum numbers and measures samples. You deal with one contact, or post the need on our requirement board.

Kinds of power cable

XLPE-insulated cable

Cross-linked polyethylene typically allows 90 °C at the conductor in service, 140 °C in an emergency and 250 °C in a short circuit; PVC is rated lower. Choose it for hot or heavily loaded feeders.

Steel wire armoured cable

A layer of steel wires under the outer sheath protects against crushing and digging. Choose it for direct burial, outdoor runs and underground work between buildings.

Aluminium conductor cable

Aluminium needs about 1.6 times the cross-section of copper for the same resistance, and lugs and glands made for aluminium. Choose it for long, large feeders where the bigger cable fits.

Medium-voltage cable

Cables for 6 kV to 30 kV under IEC 60502-2, for distribution networks and plant substations. Choose it when you take supply at medium voltage; joints and terminations need their own tested kits.

What to tell a power cable manufacturer in Bangladesh

Voltage class
IEC 60502-1 covers 1 kV and 3 kV cables, with Um of 1.2 and 3.6 kV; IEC 60502-2 covers 6 kV to 30 kV. Give the system voltage and number of cores.
Conductor
Copper or aluminium, the cross-section in mm² and the construction: solid, stranded or Milliken, each with a resistance limit in IEC 60228.
Route and grouping
Say whether the cable runs in air, on tray, in ducts or buried, and how many share the route. Grouped and enclosed cables are derated, as are cables in hot plant rooms.
Burial
For direct burial, ask for armour and an outer jacket that resists backfill and dig-ins; HDPE or polypropylene jackets are common for this use.
DC circuits
A 1 kV cable may be used on DC up to 1,500 V between conductors only when the maker declares it. Ask for that statement in writing for battery or solar feeders.
Run lengths
List each run length so drums are cut to avoid joints, and say if drums go back to the seller.

Standards and approvals for power cable

IEC 60502-1:2021
Edition 3.0, for extruded-insulation power cables of 1 kV and 3 kV in fixed installations such as networks and factories. Check the edition on the type test report.
IEC 60502-2 and IEC 60502-4
Part 2 covers 6 kV to 30 kV cables; Part 4 covers test requirements for their joints and terminations. Ask for both when you buy a medium-voltage feeder.
BDS IEC 60502 and BDS 1521 (BSTI)
BSTI lists BDS IEC 60502 Parts 1, 2 and 4 (2018) and XLPE-insulated, PVC-sheathed cable to BDS 1521 Parts 1 and 2 under mandatory certification marks.
IEC 60228:2023
Conductor classes for solid, stranded and Milliken conductors in copper and aluminium, with the maximum resistance for each size.

What moves the price of power cable

  • Metal: raw materials are usually 70 to 80 percent of a local maker's cost, so quotes follow copper or aluminium.
  • Imported inputs: local makers bring in their copper and aluminium, so the exchange rate passes into the quote.
  • Copper against aluminium: compare per circuit, since aluminium needs a larger size for the same resistance.
  • Construction: armour, an outer jacket for burial and extra cores add material to every metre.
  • Tests: witnessed tests and new type tests add cost.

Lead times and delivery

Power cable is usually made to order, so the date depends on voltage class, sizes, armour and the maker's queue. Medium-voltage cable, unusual sizes, witnessed tests and imported compound or metal take longer, and a copper move can reopen the price. Roptan confirms the dates, and any minimum drum length for each size, in the quote.

Roptan delivers drums to substations, plant rooms and sites across Bangladesh. Jointing, termination and the tests after laying are done by the seller or your electrical contractor, as the quote states. Each drum comes with its number, length and routine test sheet, plus a copy of the BSTI licence and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

What we check for this order

  • BSTI licence and scopeWe check that the licence, in the seller's name, covers BDS IEC 60502 or BDS 1521 for the voltage and construction quoted.
  • Resistance on drum samplesSamples cut from your drums are measured against the IEC 60228 limit for the size and conductor class.
  • Construction against the data sheetWe compare cores, insulation, armour and jacket on a cut sample with the approved data sheet and drawing.
  • Test sheet per drumEvery routine test sheet must carry a drum number that matches the drum delivered, with its length.

Questions buyers ask

Copper or aluminium for a long feeder?

It depends on the run. Aluminium needs about 1.6 times the cross-section of copper for the same resistance, so the cable is larger and needs lugs and glands made for aluminium. Ask for both options priced per circuit, not per metre, and choose on the whole run.

Should the quote follow IEC 60502 or BDS 1521?

Either can apply. BSTI lists BDS IEC 60502 Parts 1, 2 and 4, adopted in 2018, and BDS 1521 for XLPE cable: Part 1 up to 1,100 V, Part 2 from 3.3 kV to 33 kV. The current IEC 60502-1 is the 2021 edition. Name one and we source to it.

Can a 1 kV power cable be used on DC?

Yes, up to 1,500 V DC between two live conductors, if the maker declares it for that use under IEC 60502-1. Get the declaration in writing before an AC cable goes on a battery or solar DC feeder.

Does buried cable need armour?

Usually, for direct burial. Backfill stones and later digging damage an unprotected cable, so steel wire armour and a tough outer jacket are the normal choice. In a protected duct the armour may not be needed; your designer decides.

How soon will I hear back about cables and wires?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
