Buying enamelled copper wire in Bangladesh
Enamelled copper wire, also called magnet wire, is copper wire coated with a very thin polymer film so the turns of a coil sit side by side without shorting. It is wound into motors, generators, transformers and fans. In Bangladesh the buyers are fan, motor, pump and transformer makers and rewinding workshops; a few importers abroad buy it too.
A coil is only as good as its thinnest patch of film. Roptan takes your order to a verified enamelled copper wire manufacturer in Bangladesh, checks the BSTI licence for the shape and metal, has samples from your lot tested and delivers the spools by weight. You deal with one contact, or post the need on our requirement board.
How to brief an enamelled copper wire manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Size
- Give the bare diameter in millimetres, or width and thickness for rectangular wire. If you order by AWG or SWG, say which.
- Film grade
- Grade 1, 2 or 3 sets the film thickness. A thicker film raises the breakdown voltage but takes more room in the slot.
- Thermal class
- The class is the temperature at which the wire is expected to last 20,000 hours in service. Match it to the insulation class of the motor or transformer.
- Copper or aluminium
- Aluminium needs about 1.6 times the cross-section of copper for the same resistance, so a switch changes slot fill and coil size, not only cost.
- Spools and weight
- Wire is sold by weight: state the spool type, net weight per spool and total kilograms per size.
- Standard
- Name the IEC 60317 part for the film and class, or the BDS 1034 part, so test limits are fixed before production.
Standards and tests for enamelled copper wire
- IEC 60317 series
- Specifications for particular types of winding wire from IEC technical committee TC 55, one part per film type and class. IEC 60317-1:2010 added a pinhole test requirement.
- IEC 60317-0-1
- General requirements for enamelled round copper wire. The current text is IEC 60317-0-1:2013 with Amendment 1 of 2019; the 2008 edition was withdrawn in October 2013.
- BDS 1034:2006 (BSTI)
- Parts 1 to 4 cover round and rectangular wire in copper and aluminium, and Part 5 the test methods. BDS 1034 is on BSTI's mandatory certification list; we confirm the scope for your wire.
Lead times and delivery
Common round sizes in standard classes usually ship sooner than rectangular wire, fine or unusual diameters, high-temperature films or a dual coat that needs its own run. Imported rod, a long size list and tests on your lot add time. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum weight per size in the quote.
Roptan delivers spools in cartons to motor, fan and transformer plants and rewinding workshops across Bangladesh, kept dry. Each lot comes with a packing list of size, class and net weight per spool, the lot test sheet, a copy of the BSTI licence and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying enamelled copper wire for export
Bangladesh's recorded exports of winding wire under HS 8544.11 and 8544.19 are small, so most of this trade is domestic. For an importer, we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong) by weight, with spools palletised and a packing list by size and class, the test sheet for each lot and a certificate of origin.
Questions buyers ask
Which thermal class do I need?
The one your motor or transformer is insulated for. The class is the temperature at which the wire is expected to last 20,000 hours, so a coil that runs hotter ages fast. Films rise in range from polyvinyl acetal and polyurethane to polyimide. Your designer names the class; we source to it.
What do grade 1, 2 and 3 mean?
They are film thickness grades: grade 1 is the thinnest, grade 3 the thickest. A thicker film gives a higher breakdown voltage but a larger overall diameter, so fewer turns fit in a slot. Keep the grade the same when you change supplier.
Can I switch from copper to aluminium winding wire?
Only after a redesign. Aluminium needs about 1.6 times the cross-section of copper for the same resistance, so the coil grows and slot fill changes. BDS 1034 has separate parts for aluminium wire, but a like-for-like swap on a copper design will not fit.
Is the enamel a kind of paint?
No. It is a polymer film baked onto the wire, not paint or glass enamel. Modern wire usually carries one to four layers, often of two compositions, so name both the base coat and any overcoat in your order.
How soon will I hear back about cables and wires?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
