Buying solar batteries in Bangladesh
A solar battery stores the day's charge from the panels for use after dark or in cuts. It must be a deep cycle battery, with thicker plates, denser paste and thicker separators than a starter battery. Lead-acid has usually been the choice in Bangladesh's solar programmes, bought by installers, NGOs, mini-grid operators and homeowners.
Roptan finds the solar battery manufacturer in Bangladesh whose model fits your system, works through the bank size with you, and asks for cycling evidence rather than a float-life claim. The seller installs and commissions larger banks; you deal with Roptan only.
How to size and specify a solar battery
- System voltage and wiring
- Usually 12 V for small systems and 24, 36 or 48 V for home energy systems. Batteries in series raise the voltage; in parallel they add Ah.
- Bank size
- Ah = daily load in watts × hours ÷ battery voltage, then allow for depth of discharge and inverter losses. Around 50 percent average depth is a common balance.
- Cycle life
- Cycles fall as discharges deepen. Ask for cycles at a stated depth and temperature; one reference gives 200 to 300 for deep cycle lead-acid.
- Panels and controller
- Solar panels do not always give a lead-acid bank a full charge, and a bank left part-charged sulfates. Size the panels and controller to refill it every day.
- Heat
- Charge voltage should fall 3 mV per cell for each degree above 25 °C, and float should drop above 29 °C. Use temperature compensation and keep batteries out of direct sun.
- State of charge
- Open-circuit voltage at rest, read after a few hours without charge or load, shows charge: a cell at 2.10 V is about 90 percent full.
Solar battery standards and test evidence
- IEC 61427-1
- Requirements and test methods for batteries in off-grid photovoltaic systems. It does not size the bank, but it is the cycling evidence to ask for.
- IEC 60896-21 and IEC 60896-22
- Written for sealed batteries on float in telecom and UPS use, so a float-life claim under them does not prove daily solar cycling.
- IEC 60896-11
- General requirements and tests for vented stationary cells, the family that flooded tubular cells belong to.
- EN IEC 62485-2
- Safety of stationary battery installations up to 1,500 V DC, including ventilation, for battery rooms at mini-grid and telecom sites.
Lead times and delivery
Time depends on whether the maker has the model in stock, on the number and size of cells in the bank, on booking the seller's installation at a rooftop or remote site, and on dangerous goods bookings for export. Roptan confirms the delivery date and the minimum in your quote.
Inside Bangladesh we deliver to rooftops, homes, mini-grid and telecom sites. For larger banks the seller installs the rack, sets the controller to the battery type and checks the bank at commissioning. You receive the test report, a date-code list, warranty terms and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Roptan supplies new batteries only and takes no old ones in exchange.
Buying solar batteries for export
For importers we quote FOB Chattogram. Wet lead-acid batteries usually ship as Class 8 dangerous goods under UN 2794, and lithium packs as Class 9 under UN 3480, so the seller provides the declaration and a safety data sheet to GHS, with the invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin. We check labels, date codes and voltage before loading.
Questions buyers ask
How big a battery bank does my solar system need?
It depends on the energy you use after dark, not the panel size. Multiply each load's watts by its hours, add them, divide by the battery voltage, then roughly double for a 50 percent depth of discharge and add inverter losses. Send us the load list.
Tubular flooded or gel for a remote site?
Gel, if nobody can top up water: OPzV cells are the same tubular design, sealed. Flooded OPzS cells cost less and suit maintained sites. Keep either shaded; one reference says every 8 °C above 25 °C halves a sealed battery's life.
Why do solar batteries fail early in Bangladesh?
Common causes are undercharging, heat and poor quality. Panels often fail to refill a lead-acid bank, so it sulfates, and a 2023 report on the solar home system programme blamed poor batteries, inverters and panels for systems going out of service. Size the panels to the bank and buy new stock with test evidence.
What battery life should a solar home system expect?
A 2023 press report said IDCOL's solar home system specifications call for at least five years of battery life, with replacement under warranty; check the current specification if you supply such a programme. Real life depends on depth of discharge, charging and heat.
How soon will I hear back about batteries?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
