Buying battery parts and separators in Bangladesh
Battery parts are the pieces a lead-acid battery is built from: separators, lead alloy grids, lead oxides, plastic containers and lids, and vent valves. In Bangladesh some larger lead-acid makers produce their own lead alloy, oxides, grids and containers; we have found no source showing separators made here. Buyers are assemblers abroad and at home, where a 2021 national report counted 19 registered firms that make or recycle lead-acid batteries.
Roptan finds the battery parts and separator manufacturer in Bangladesh, or the importer, that can supply to your drawing. We write dimensions, materials and agreed test methods into the order, check each lot against your approved sample and deliver to your plant.
How to specify battery parts and separators
- Separator type and material
- State flooded or AGM, the material, and sheets, rolls or envelopes, with the drawing or an approved sample.
- Size against the plate
- A separator must be a little larger than the plate so loose material cannot short between plates. Give plate size and separator width and height.
- Separator properties
- List porosity, pore size, electrical resistance, mechanical strength and resistance to acid and oxidation, each with an agreed method and limit.
- AGM mat
- For glass-fibre mat, add thickness, compressibility and recovery, surface area and acid weight loss.
- Temperature
- The separator must stay stable over the battery's working temperature, so say where the batteries will work.
- Grid alloy
- Name the alloy, lead-calcium or lead-antimony, and send the grid drawing. Lead-calcium gives off less hydrogen and needs less watering.
- Containers and lids
- Send container and lid drawings, the material and the vent or valve design, and ask whether an existing mould fits.
Test methods and paperwork for battery parts
- BCIS-03B
- Test methods from Battery Council International, a US industry group, for flooded-battery separators: dimensional stability, porosity, puncture resistance, thickness and wetting, plus chemical tests.
- BCIS-03A
- The same body's methods for AGM separators, covering compressibility, surface area, thickness, acid weight loss and organic impurities.
- Agreed drawing and sample
- BCI says the battery maker and separator maker jointly agree the test methods and limits for each battery type, so write both into the order.
- Battery acid and SDS
- Battery acid supplied with parts is Class 8, UN 2796, in the US hazardous materials table. Ask for a safety data sheet to GHS for acid and lead oxides.
Lead times and delivery
Time depends on where the part comes from. Grids, lead alloy, oxides and containers made by a Bangladeshi lead-acid maker depend on its own production plan; imported separators depend on the shipment. A new drawing adds a sample round and, for containers, a mould. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh we deliver to your plant in sealed, labelled packs, separators kept flat, clean and dry. Each lot comes with the agreed test results, the drawing revision it was made to, a packing list and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3), plus the seller's lot certificate for imported separators.
Buying battery parts and separators for export
For assemblers abroad we quote FOB Chattogram for parts made in Bangladesh, such as lead alloy, oxides, grids and containers. Battery parts usually fall under HS subheading 8507.90, parts of electric accumulators; your broker confirms the line. Documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, lot test results and an SDS where needed.
Questions buyers ask
Are battery separators made in Bangladesh?
We have seen no evidence that they are, so treat them as imported. The larger Bangladeshi lead-acid makers do produce their own lead alloy, oxides, grids and containers. For separators, Roptan sources through sellers who import them and checks each lot.
Is there a standard for lead-acid battery separators?
Battery Council International, a US industry group, publishes test methods for flooded and AGM separators, and says the battery maker and separator maker jointly agree the methods and limits for each battery type. So your drawing, approved sample and agreed limits become the specification.
Should my grids be lead-calcium or antimony?
It depends on the duty. High-antimony alloy gives a rigid grid and is still used where plates cycle often, but it gives off more hydrogen, so the battery needs more watering. Lead-calcium gasses less and suits low-maintenance and standby batteries. Name the alloy on the drawing and test the finished battery before you switch.
What separator materials are in batteries used in Bangladesh?
A university laboratory analysis quoted in a 2021 national report found separators of polyester, polypropylene or glass-fibre mat, about 7 percent of a used lead-acid battery's weight. Name your material on the drawing.
How soon will I hear back about batteries?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
