Buying skirts in Bangladesh

Retailers, importers and online labels buy skirts from Bangladesh in woven and knitted fabric. The shape drives the order: a pencil skirt is usually cut in stretch fabric, and a pleated one can take three times the fabric of a plain one. A skirt manufacturer in Bangladesh needs your sketch, fabric and measurements first.

Roptan runs the order: we match each style to a verified seller that sews your fabric and shape, have the fabric tested, approve fit at waist and hip on every size, check pleats after a wash and inspect the bulk before it leaves.

Kinds of skirt

A-line skirts

Fitted at the hips and widening to the hem. A gored version is built from panels narrow at the waist and wider at the hem. Give hem width as well as waist and hip.

Pencil skirts

Slim, with a straight, narrow cut, usually ending at or just below the knee, and commonly made in stretch fabric. A kick pleat near the hem lets the wearer walk.

Pleated skirts

Pleats stitched flat to the hip or left free, pressed into sharp creases or falling in soft folds. Box pleats, knife pleats set back to back, tend to spring out from the waist.

Wrap skirts

Wraps around the waist with an overlap. Mark the overlap and the fastening on the sketch, and approve both on a fit sample in the actual fabric.

Circle and tiered skirts

Cut as one or more circles with a hole for the waist: very full yet smooth, without darts or gathers, often on an elastic band. Tiered skirts stack layers, each wider than the last.

How to brief a skirt manufacturer in Bangladesh

Points of measure
Waist first, read across the fastened, relaxed waistband, then seat, length, hem width and waistband height, each with a tolerance.
Fabric and weight
Fibre, weave or knit, and g/m2 with a tolerance; bottom-weights usually run about 237 to 305 g/m2. Box pleats usually want a thicker fabric.
Pleat type
Knife, box or stacked box, pressed or unpressed, with the pleat depth. Knife and box pleats take about 3:1 fabric, stacked box pleats 5:1.
Waistband and closure
A fixed band with an invisible coil zip, common in skirts, or an elastic band, common on circle skirts. Give band height and zip length.
Lining or slip
Thin or clingy fabric drapes better over a slip, and a lining hides raw seams. Pre-pleated chiffon is usually thin and needs one.

Tests that matter for skirts

EN ISO 15487
Judges the finished skirt after home washing and drying: pleats, creases, seams and colour. Use it to accept pleat retention on a washed sample.
EN ISO 5077 with ISO 6330
Shrinkage in washing and drying, by a named ISO 6330 procedure. Set limits on waist and length, since the waist decides the size.
ISO 13936-1 and ISO 13936-2
Seam slippage in woven fabric, by fixed seam opening or fixed load. Part 1 does not suit stretch fabric: agree another method for stretch pencil skirts.
ISO 105-C06 and ISO 105-X12
Colour fastness to washing and rubbing, graded on grey scales. The methods leave the pass grade to you, so write it into the order.

What moves the price of a skirt

  • Pleats: knife and box pleats take about three times the finished width, stacked box pleats about five.
  • Fullness: a circle or tiered skirt usually takes more fabric than a pencil or A-line skirt.
  • Fabric route: much woven skirt fabric is imported, adding freight and time; knitted fabric is more often local.
  • Lining or slip: a second material to cut and sew, usual on sheer and pre-pleated skirts.
  • Print: digital printing suits short runs, since it needs no screens; screen printing suits longer ones.

Lead times and delivery

Pleats and fabric set the calendar. A pleated style adds a pleating step and a washed pleat sample to approve before bulk pleating, and woven skirts on imported fabric wait for it to arrive. Knitted skirts on fabric in stock usually move faster. Fit, size set and pre-production approval come first in every case. Ask whether a minimum counts per style, colour or size. Roptan confirms dates and minimums in the quote.

Skirts go folded flat in cartons, or full length on hangers in poly bags inside the carton; say which for pleated styles. Roptan delivers anywhere in Bangladesh with the packing list, the inspection report and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying skirts for export

Women's and girls' skirts and divided skirts usually fall under subheadings 6204.51 to 6204.59 when woven and 6104.51 to 6104.59 when knitted, split by fibre; your customs broker confirms the code for each style. We quote FOB Chattogram, or air freight from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, with test and inspection reports.

What we check for this order

  • Waist and hip on every sizeWe measure relaxed waist, seat and length on each size in the size set before bulk is cut.
  • Pleats after a washWe have a pleated sample washed and checked for pleat retention before bulk pleating starts.
  • Zips and waistbandsOn the first sewn skirts we check that zips run freely and waistbands sit flat; a stuck zip is a major defect.
  • Final AQL inspectionA random sample checked to ISO 2859-1, typically at AQL 2.5 major and 4.0 minor; a waist outside tolerance counts as major.

Questions buyers ask

How much more fabric does a pleated skirt use?

Usually about three times the finished width for knife or box pleats, and about five times for stacked box pleats; pre-pleated fabric is bought at about three times the normal length. Approve a pleated sample before the fabric is ordered.

Will the pleats stay after washing?

On polyester, usually yes: heat changes the shape of polyester fibres, so heat-set pleats last the life of the fabric. Cotton and silk need chemicals as well. For any other fibre, ask for a washed sample judged to EN ISO 15487 before bulk.

Should a pencil skirt be in stretch fabric?

Usually, yes: pencil skirts are commonly made in stretch fabric, and a kick pleat near the hem keeps the narrow line walkable. Since ISO 13936-1 does not suit stretch fabric, agree another seam slippage method, and approve fit at waist and seat.

Can you supply girls' skirts as well?

Yes. Girls' skirts share the women's customs lines, but children's wear has its own rules: EN 14682 on cords and drawstrings in Europe, and CPSIA for US children's products. Give the age range on the brief so the seller designs to them.

How soon will I hear back about women's wear?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
