Buying dresses in Bangladesh
Importers, retailers and online brands abroad order dresses from Bangladesh, as do brands selling at home, in woven crepe, georgette and cotton or in knitted jersey. The pattern sets most of the work, from a plain shift to a bias cut, so a dress manufacturer in Bangladesh needs your pattern, fabric and size chart first.
Roptan runs the order: we match each style to a verified seller that already sews your fabric, have the fabric tested, approve fit on every size, check the first pieces in sewing and inspect the finished dresses before they leave.
How to brief a dress manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Length and measures
- Name the length: mini above the knee, midi at mid-calf, maxi at the ankle. Give bust, waist, hip and shoulder-to-hem length, each with a tolerance, typically about 1 to 2 cm.
- Fabric and weight
- Fibre, weave or knit, and g/m2 with a tolerance. Light top-weights usually run about 136 to 203 g/m2, and tropical weights for hot weather about 153 to 288.
- Viscose grade
- Regular viscose keeps its shape poorly when wet; high-wet-modulus viscose is stronger. Name the grade and test shrinkage on the approved fabric.
- Grainline
- Mark it on every pattern piece. A bias cut drapes and stretches more than the straight grain, and off-grain fabric distorts the dress in wear.
- Hem and lining
- A rolled hem gives a narrow, light edge on very full skirts in sheer fabric. Decide whether sheer georgette gets a lining or a slip.
Fabric and garment tests for dresses
- EN ISO 5077 with ISO 6330
- Shrinkage after washing and drying, by a named ISO 6330 procedure; ISO 3759 sets how the dress is marked and measured.
- ISO 105-C06, X12 and E04
- Colour fastness to washing, rubbing and perspiration, on grey scales. The methods set no pass grade: write yours into the order.
- ISO 13936-1 and ISO 13936-2
- Seam slippage in woven fabric, by fixed seam opening or fixed load. State the opening, usually 6 mm; Part 1 does not suit stretch fabrics.
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100
- Tests every thread, button and accessory against over 1,000 harmful substances. Adult dresses usually fall in class 2, direct skin contact; certificates last one year.
Lead times and delivery
The date turns on fit rounds and fabric. A fit sample, a size set and a pre-production sample each need approval before bulk fabric is cut. Woven dresses on imported fabric then wait for it to arrive and clear; knitted dresses on fabric in stock usually move faster. Ask whether a minimum counts per style, colour or size. Roptan confirms dates and minimums in the quote.
Dresses travel folded flat in cartons or full length on hangers in poly bags, which changes carton count and freight volume. Inside Bangladesh, Roptan delivers to your warehouse or store with the packing list, inspection report and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying dresses for export
Women's dresses usually fall under HS heading 6204 when woven and 6104 when knitted, in subheadings .41 to .49 by fibre; girls' dresses share these lines, and your customs broker confirms the code. Quotes are FOB Chattogram, or by air from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, with test and inspection reports.
Questions buyers ask
Silk or polyester georgette: which suits our dresses?
Both are sheer crepes with a light, drapey hand that suits flowing dresses more than structured ones. Silk georgette is delicate; synthetic georgette usually stands up better to wear. Decide on a lining or a slip, and approve the drape on a sample in the actual fabric.
Will the pleats in a pleated dress last?
On polyester, usually yes: heat-set pleats last the life of the fabric. Cotton or silk pleats need a chemical treatment too, so check a sample in your actual fabric after a home wash. Plan a lining, since pre-pleated fabric is thin.
Which size standard should our EU labels follow?
EN 13402-3 covers size labelling from body measurements and intervals; parts 1 and 2 were withdrawn at the end of 2021. ISO 8559-1 defines how body measurements are taken. Neither fixes your size numbers, so send your own chart and grade rules.
Are knitted or woven dresses quicker to make?
Knitted, usually. Local mills spin about 85 percent of the yarn knitwear needs but make only about 40 percent of the fabric used in woven garments (USDA, April 2026), so woven dresses more often wait for imported fabric. Book that fabric early.
How soon will I hear back about women's wear?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
