Buying ski wear in Bangladesh

Ski wear means ski jackets, salopettes (ski trousers), one-piece ski suits and children's snowsuits worn as everyday winter outerwear, bought by importers and brands for cold markets. The first choice is shell or insulated: a shell jacket has no insulation layer and relies on layers beneath; an insulated jacket has one between shell and liner.

Ski wear is a small export line for Bangladesh, and sources disagree on how far its technical outerwear capability reaches, so a ski wear manufacturer in Bangladesh is checked seller by seller. Roptan verifies the seam-taping set-up, writes ratings and features into the order, checks the lab reports and a sample, and inspects the bulk.

Kinds of ski wear

Insulated ski jackets

Synthetic or down insulation between shell and liner, in grams per square metre; one retailer puts most at 60 to 120 gsm. Choose them for cold days and an easy pace.

Shell jackets

No insulation layer, so lighter, less bulky and easier to move in; warmth comes from layers worn underneath. Choose them for touring, freeriding and hard skiing.

Softshell jackets

Usually a soft outer face, a membrane and a fleecy inside laminated into one layer, often cut as a hoodie. Choose them for casual and spring wear.

Salopettes and ski suits

Salopettes are ski trousers; a ski suit is a one-piece overall, or a jacket and trousers sold together in one fabric. Choose suits for children's snowsuits and retail sets.

How to brief a ski wear manufacturer in Bangladesh

Waterproofing
Hydrostatic head in millimetres on the finished shell: the water column it holds back, so 5,000 mm holds five metres. You set the rating; the lab tests it.
Breathability
Retailers quote grams of water vapour through a square metre in 24 hours; ISO 11092 gives water-vapour resistance (Ret) instead, so name the unit. It matters most when the wearer runs hot.
Seam taping
Fully taped, every seam, or critically taped, only the top seams exposed to weather, such as shoulders, hood and sleeves. Glued and laser-cut seams avoid needle holes.
Insulation
Synthetic or down, with its weight in grams per square metre, and down by fill power. Wet down loses almost all its warmth, so it needs a waterproof shell.
Features
Water-resistant zips, an adjustable helmet-compatible hood, underarm vents, a powder skirt that cinches at the hips, wrist gaiters and pockets you can reach wearing a pack.

Tests and rules for ski wear

EN ISO 811 and EN ISO 4920
ISO 811 is the hydrostatic pressure test for water penetration. The ISO 4920 spray test measures surface wetting only, not rain penetration, so it cannot back a waterproof claim.
ISO 11092 and EN ISO 15496
ISO 11092 measures thermal and water-vapour resistance on a sweating guarded hotplate; ISO 15496 is a simpler permeability test for quality control, with some limitations against ISO 11092.
REACH entry 79, PFHxA
From 10 October 2026, Regulation (EU) 2024/2462 limits PFHxA in clothing textiles to below 25 ppb. Factory water-repellent finishes have commonly been fluoropolymer based: ask for a fluorine-free finish or a test report.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100
Class 3 covers items without direct skin contact, with jackets as the example, but a lining that touches skin may need class 2. Ask which parts the certificate covers.

What moves the price of ski wear

  • Shell: a laminated waterproof-breathable shell adds a membrane and a bonding step to the face fabric, and it is often imported.
  • Insulation: more grams per square metre means more fill in every piece; down also needs its certificate and a composition test.
  • Seam taping: fully taped styles tape every seam, critically taped ones only the exposed seams, so full taping takes more tape and time.
  • Features: each zip, vent, powder skirt and wrist gaiter adds parts and sewing.

Lead times and delivery

Samples usually need four to six weeks from proto to pre-production. Layered woven garments such as ski jackets usually sit at the long end of order to port: one sourcing guide gives 90 to 130 days for complex wovens, against 75 to 120 for knits. Imported shell fabric adds weeks, and the August to October peak stretches dates. Minimums usually start around 1,000 pieces per style and colour. Roptan confirms both in the quote.

Ski wear from Bangladesh is mostly bought for export, so handover is usually to your forwarder at Chattogram, or in Dhaka for air freight, with the packing list, the waterproofing, breathability and finish reports, and the final inspection report. Buyers inside Bangladesh get door delivery and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying ski wear for export

A ski suit, meaning a ski overall, or a zipped ski jacket and trousers put up together for retail sale in a fabric of the same texture, style and composition, falls under HS heading 6112 when knitted or 6211 when woven. A ski jacket sold alone usually goes under the anorak headings, 6201 or 6202 woven and 6101 or 6102 knitted. Your broker confirms the line. Quotes are FOB Chattogram; sea transit usually takes three to five weeks to US and EU ports.

What we check for this order

  • Taping set-up firstBefore quoting, we confirm the seller has seam-taping equipment in use, since ski wear is a small export line in Bangladesh.
  • Tape and featuresOn sample and bulk we check tape on every seam the order names, water-resistant zips, the adjustable hood and reachable pockets.
  • Reports on the shellWe read the hydrostatic head, breathability and PFHxA reports for the bulk shell fabric against the ratings in your order.
  • Final AQL inspectionRandom inspection to ISO 2859-1, usually AQL 2.5 major and 4.0 minor, with children's sizes checked for hood and neck cords.

Questions buyers ask

What waterproof rating should ski wear have?

You set it for your market: ISO 811 is a test method, not a pass mark, and retailers quote different figures. Ask for the result on the finished shell, and specify seam taping too, since water gets in at the seams.

Can children's ski wear have a hood drawstring?

Not on young children's sizes. We leave hood and neck drawstrings off them and check every other cord against EN 14682, whose scope names ski apparel for children up to 14. In the US, drawstrings on children's upper outerwear in sizes 2T to 16 must meet ASTM F1816-97, which bars hood and neck drawstrings up to size 12.

Down or synthetic insulation?

Down is rated by fill power, synthetic by grams per square metre. Wet down loses almost all its warmth, so it needs a waterproof shell. For down, ask for a Responsible Down Standard certificate and a lab composition report; in the US, '100% Down' must contain only down.

Can sellers in Bangladesh make technical ski wear?

Some can, but it is a small line: Bangladesh exports few ski suits, and sources disagree on how far its technical outerwear capability reaches. Roptan checks each seller's seam-taping set-up, and asks for earlier outerwear test reports, before quoting.

How soon will I hear back about sportswear and swimwear?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
