Buying single jersey knit in Bangladesh

Single jersey is the plain weft knit, made on one set of needles of a circular machine, with V-shaped loops on the face and rounded loops on the back. It stretches both ways, curls at cut edges, and can shrink and grow. It is the usual cloth for T-shirts and casual tops.

Two jerseys at one GSM can feel and shrink differently, because weight follows yarn count and loop length together. A single jersey knit supplier in Bangladesh should work to all three. Roptan sources from verified mills, writes them into the order and checks the first rolls.

Kinds of single jersey knit

Combed and carded cotton jersey

Combing removes short fibres, so combed jersey is smoother and usually pills less than carded. Choose combed for retail tops and prints, and carded for basics.

CVC jersey

A cotton-polyester blend with cotton above half the fibre, usually 55 to 80%. Choose it for a cotton hand with some polyester; state the exact split, as it moves the price.

Melange jersey

Also called heather: knitted from yarn spun from fibres of different colours blended before spinning, giving a two-tone, flecked look. Approve it on a physical swatch.

Stretch jersey

Elastane in the yarn gives stretch for fitted tops and activewear. Name the percentage: knitted fabric over 30 cm wide with 5% or more elastomeric yarn is customs heading 6004, not 6006.

How to brief a single jersey knit supplier in Bangladesh

Count and stitch length
State the count in Ne, combed or carded, and the stitch length beside the GSM. Mills usually set weight through count, stitch cam setting and yarn tension.
Finished GSM and width
Quote finished figures, not grey. Compacting usually raises GSM and shortens length, and heavier jersey is run with more overfeed at a narrower width. Width is usually traded in inches.
Open-width or tubular
Tubular jersey stays a tube; open-width jersey is slit and finished flat. Each usually runs on its own compacting route, so finished width and shrinkage control differ.
Shrinkage both ways
Compacting cuts lengthwise shrinkage but usually does little across the width. Ask for both results after a named wash, and say whether the roll must be compacted.
Tolerances in writing
ASTM D3887, the old tolerance specification for knitted fabric, is withdrawn, so agree GSM, width, shrinkage and spirality limits in the order.

Tests and certificates for single jersey

ASTM D3776/D3776M
Mass per unit area, active and applicable to most fabrics, with an option for a small swatch sent to a lab. ISO 3801 is for woven fabric only.
ISO 16322-2 and EN ISO 5077
Spirality and dimensional change, both measured after an EN ISO 6330 wash programme you name. Use the same programme for sample and bulk.
EN ISO 3071, 14184-1 and 14362-1
pH of the water extract, formaldehyde and certain azo colourants: chemical tests for jersey worn next to skin. Ask for a report per colour, with lab name and date.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100
Choose the class by skin contact: class 1 for babies up to 3 years, class 2 for direct skin contact. Check the certificate number in the issuer's Label Check.

What moves the price of single jersey

  • Yarn: count, combed or carded spinning and the blend set the kilogram price before knitting starts.
  • Weight: with the same yarn and process the kilogram price usually holds across GSMs, so heavier jersey costs more per metre.
  • Cotton: Bangladesh grows under 2% of the cotton its mills use, so world prices and the exchange rate pass into yarn.
  • Energy: gas shortages have forced many spinning and dyeing units to run far below capacity.

Lead times and delivery

Dates depend on the mill's yarn and dyeing schedule, so Roptan quotes them per order. Yarn in stock and a running shade shorten the time; a new yarn booking, a difficult shade, certified fibre and extra lab dips lengthen it. Ask whether the minimum is per colour or per dye lot. Roptan confirms dates and the minimum in the quote.

We deliver jersey rolls to cutting rooms anywhere in Bangladesh. Mould can grow on clothing at about 62 to 93% relative humidity and 25 to 31 °C, common monsoon conditions, so ask for poly-wrapped rolls. Exporters usually receive the fabric against a back-to-back letter of credit; local buyers get a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying single jersey knit for export

For buyers abroad, Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram (Chittagong), rolls packed by shade band. Dyed cotton jersey usually enters under heading 6006, stretch jersey with 5% or more elastane under 6004; your broker confirms the line. For GOTS jersey, every company that handles the fabric must be certified, the dyer included.

What we check for this order

  • Construction against the sampleWe have stitch length and wales and courses per centimetre checked on the first rolls against the sample.
  • Finished GSM and widthWe check finished GSM and width on rolls from each lot against the tolerance in your order.
  • Washed pieceWe have a piece washed to your named programme and measured for shrinkage both ways and spirality.
  • Shade band on every rollLarge orders are dyed in several lots that can differ, so we check every roll carries its shade band number.

Questions buyers ask

What is the difference between single jersey and interlock?

Single jersey is knitted on one set of needles and curls at cut edges. Interlock is a double knit on two sets: it looks like jersey on both sides, is more stable and does not curl. Write single or double, since weight, price and shrinkage differ.

Why do my T-shirts twist after washing?

That is spirality: the knit leans after laundering. Yarn count and loop length both affect it, so jerseys of one GSM from two mills can twist differently. Set a limit measured to ISO 16322-2 on a washed sample, and have the bulk checked against it.

Can you match a jersey to my sample?

Yes. A lab can measure your swatch's stitch length and yarn linear density to EN 14970, its wales and courses per centimetre to EN 14971, and its GSM, and the mill knits to those numbers. We compare the first rolls with the same tests.

How much will single jersey shrink?

No single figure applies: yarn, construction and finishing all change it. Single jersey can shrink and also grow, and compacting helps lengthwise but little across the width. Agree limits for both directions after a named wash, and test the bulk, not only the sample.

How soon will I hear back about fabric?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
