Buying polyester woven in Bangladesh
This page covers filament taffeta for linings, spun polyester-cotton pocketing, ripstop, and coated or water-repellent polyester. Garment factories use them in trouser pockets, trouser and suit linings, rainwear and outerwear. Much of it is imported: a 2021 news report put woven garment makers' imports at around 60% of their non-cotton fabric.
Each kind is specified, tested and classed for customs differently, so a polyester woven fabric supplier in Bangladesh needs to know which you mean. Roptan sources from verified mills and importers, writes yarn, density, finish and test minimums into the order, and checks the first lot.
How to brief a polyester woven fabric supplier in Bangladesh
- Filament or spun
- Filament cloth such as taffeta is heading 5407; spun polyester fabric is 5512 to 5515. For filament, name the yarn: POY, textured (DTY) or fully drawn (FDY).
- Yarn and density
- Warp and weft denier, the grams per 9,000 metres of yarn, plus ends and picks per inch or the T number. Say grey or finished, since the count can rise in finishing.
- Weight and width
- Name the unit: GSM, oz per square yard or metres per kilogram. A width quoted as 58/60 inches usually reflects finishing shrinkage, so state the cuttable width.
- Dyeing a blend
- Polyester takes only disperse dyes and cotton usually takes reactive dyes, so a poly-cotton shade must match across two fibres. Approve the lab dip under the agreed light.
- Heat setting
- Polyester is thermoplastic and can change shape under heat; heat setting gives it dimensional stability. Ask for the finish route and the maximum iron or press temperature.
Tests and certificates for polyester woven fabric
- EN ISO 4920 and EN ISO 811
- A spray test for surface wetting, and hydrostatic head for water penetration in millimetres. They measure different things, so a fabric can pass one and fail the other.
- EN ISO 13936-2 and EN ISO 13937-2
- Seam slippage under a fixed load, for all apparel woven fabrics, and trouser tear for ripstop. Set minimums in newtons, warp and weft.
- ISO 1833-11
- Measures the cotton share of a cotton-polyester blend with sulphuric acid, so a pocketing blend can be checked against the invoice.
- GRS
- For recycled polyester: at least 20% recycled content to certify, 50% for a consumer label, and third-party audits. The Materials Matter Standard takes over: effective 31 December 2026, mandatory 31 December 2027.
Lead times and delivery
Dates depend on whether the fabric is a stock lot or made to order, here or abroad, so Roptan quotes them per order. A stock lot in a running colour is quicker; a new shade, coating, water test rounds and sea freight with clearance at Chattogram add time. Roptan confirms dates and the minimum in the quote.
We deliver rolls to your factory or store anywhere in Bangladesh, labelled with lot, colour and length. Polyester absorbs little water, but poly-cotton cloth and packing can take up monsoon damp, and mould can grow at about 62 to 93% relative humidity and 25 to 31 °C. Ask whether the quote is bonded or duty-paid.
Questions buyers ask
What does 190T mean on a taffeta quote?
It is the density: ends per inch plus picks per inch, so 190T is 190 threads in total per square inch, not 190 each way. A higher T is denser. Ask for the warp and weft denier too, because the T number says nothing about yarn size.
Is water-repellent fabric the same as waterproof?
No. A repellent finish makes water bead on the surface and is tested by spray to EN ISO 4920, which does not predict rain penetration. Coated or laminated fabric resists penetration, tested by hydrostatic head to EN ISO 811. Name the test and the minimum you need.
Can you supply recycled polyester fabric?
Yes. Recycled polyester comes from post-consumer bottles or post-industrial waste. For a recycled claim, ask for a GRS certificate, which covers goods with at least 20% recycled content (50% for a consumer label), and a transaction certificate for the lot. We check both before the order ships.
Can you supply nylon taffeta or ripstop instead?
Yes. Taffeta is also woven from nylon, and ripstop is often nylon. Nylon and polyester filament fabrics sit in separate lines of tariff heading 5407, so state the fibre in the order rather than leaving the choice to the seller, and set your tear and water test minimums for either.
How soon will I hear back about fabric?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
