Buying denim fabric in Bangladesh
Denim is a warp-faced cotton twill of three or four threads whose warp yarns are one colour, usually indigo, against a white or lighter weft, so the face is blue and the back pale. Customs law uses the same definition. Jeans, jacket and shirt makers buy it for export and home brands.
Industry sources said in March 2026 that local mills meet around 70 percent of domestic denim fabric demand, the rest coming from India, China and Pakistan. A denim fabric supplier in Bangladesh may quote either. Roptan sources both from verified sellers, writes weight, stretch and wash limits into the order, and checks a washed sample.
What to send a denim fabric supplier in Bangladesh
- Weight and unit
- Oz per square yard; multiply by 33.9057 for GSM, so 14 oz is about 475 GSM. Ounces per linear yard, taken across the full width, is a different measure.
- Yarn and construction
- Denim yarns are coarse, usually single counts from about 6s, with 8s to 16s common. Give warp and weft counts and ends and picks per inch.
- Indigo dyeing
- Warp is rope dyed or sheet dyed. Rope dyeing is quick, so indigo usually stays near the yarn surface, called ring dyeing, which fades differently from fully dyed yarn.
- Cuttable width
- State the width after finishing, edges excluded. A narrow roll needs more fabric per garment, so compare quotes at the same cuttable width.
- Shrinkage and skew
- Say compressively shrunk or raw. Shrinkage is usually measured on 50 by 50 cm coupons washed as in production. Set skew on a washed coupon, not at zero.
Tests and certificates for denim fabric
- EN ISO 20932-1 and ASTM D3107
- Elasticity, and stretch, growth and recovery of woven stretch fabric; ASTM D3107 suits stretch above 12%. EN 14704-1 was replaced in 2020, so cite the current standard.
- ISO 16322-2
- Spirality after laundering. The standard notes that some constructions, denim among them, can have spirality introduced on purpose, so set a limit rather than zero.
- ISO 105-X12 and ISO 105-C06
- Dry and wet rubbing, and wash staining graded on the ISO 105-A03 grey scale. Ask for the actual grades, not a pass note.
- ZDHC MRSL
- Maximum limits for restricted chemicals used in manufacturing, so it concerns dye houses and wash houses. Ask whether the mill follows it.
Lead times and delivery
Dates depend on yarn, the warp dyeing slot, weight and stretch, so Roptan quotes them per order. A repeat construction in a running shade is quicker; a new shade, stretch development, wash trials and imported cloth take longer. Ask whether the minimum is per shade or dyeing lot. Roptan confirms dates and the minimum in the quote.
We deliver denim rolls to cutting rooms and wash plants anywhere in Bangladesh, tagged with shade band, length and width. Mould can grow on clothing at about 62 to 93% relative humidity and 25 to 31 °C, so ask for poly-wrapped rolls. Garment exporters usually pay by back-to-back letter of credit; local buyers receive a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying denim fabric for export
For jeans makers abroad, Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram (Chittagong), with rolls packed by shade band. The tariff splits denim by fibre and weight: 85% cotton or more and over 200 g/m2, about 5.9 oz, is heading 5209; denim under 85% cotton but still mainly cotton, at that weight, is 5211. Your broker confirms the line.
Questions buyers ask
How do I convert denim oz to GSM?
Multiply ounces per square yard by 33.9057: 10 oz is about 339 GSM, 12 oz about 407 and 14 oz about 475. Check the unit first, because ounces per linear yard, a piece 36 inches long across the full width, is a different quantity.
What denim weight is right for jeans?
One denim guide puts everyday jeans at 12 to 14 oz, softer, more breathable jeans at 8 to 10 oz, and stiff, durable jeans at 16 oz and above. Names and cut-offs differ by seller, so give the number and the weight after washing.
Why does indigo stain the pocket lining?
That is backstaining: indigo moves from the denim onto the lighter pocketing in the wash, and insufficient rinsing is one cause. Ask the seller for a washed sample with the pocketing sewn in, and for the cause and fix if staining appears.
Can you supply selvedge denim?
Yes, from sellers who weave on shuttle looms. Expect a narrow cloth, about 30 inches wide, needing roughly 3 yards for a pair of jeans, and a higher cost than wide denim. It is often sold raw, so agree the shrinkage you accept after the first wash.
How soon will I hear back about fabric?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
