Buying silver jewellery in Bangladesh

Silver jewellery is usually made in sterling silver: 92.5 per cent silver and 7.5 per cent other metal, usually copper, since pure silver is too soft for most pieces. In Bangladesh it is weighed in bhori, about 11.664 g, as gold is. Shops, online sellers and gift buyers order it at home; foreign buyers need grams.

A silver jewellery manufacturer in Bangladesh works in a trade where the 925 stamp is the maker's own claim. Roptan sources from verified makers, asks for an assay naming the method, weighs the pieces and checks the findings and plating against your order before handover.

Kinds of silver jewellery

Sterling silver (925)

The usual grade: copper adds hardness and strength to the silver. It tarnishes as sulphur compounds in the air form black silver sulphide, faster where the alloy holds less silver.

Britannia silver (958)

About 95.8 per cent silver, against 92.5 for sterling. Choose it for buyers who want a higher silver content, and confirm the fineness mark your market uses.

Tarnish-resistant alloys

Sterling alloys with small additions such as germanium, zinc, silicon or boron, which slow tarnish. Name the result you need, not a trade name, and ask for the alloy on the assay.

Gold-plated silver

Silver plated in gold, usually over copper and nickel layers. In the US, vermeil means sterling with gold of at least 10 karat and 2.5 microns on all significant surfaces.

Silver-plated base metal

Brass or another base metal with a silver plate. It is imitation jewellery, not silver, and in the US it may not be called silver without a qualifier.

How to specify silver jewellery

Fineness
State 925 or another fineness in parts per thousand, with a tolerance, and the test method for the assay.
Weight in grams
Give net silver weight per piece in grams with a tolerance; convert any quote in bhori or ana.
Plating and barrier layer
For gold-plated silver, state the gold thickness and the barrier layer under it. Silver slowly diffuses into thin gold and fades its colour, over months or years.
Solder and findings
List clasps, ear posts, jump rings and the solder. Solder and findings are where lead or nickel usually turns up, so the EU tests aim at them.
Wearer's age
Adult pieces in the US fall under ASTM F2999 and children's pieces under ASTM F2923; say which applies.
Marks and description
Say which stamp you need, such as 925, and how the piece will be described for sale, since the US rules on silver wording are strict.

Standards, assay and labelling for silver

US FTC Jewelry Guides, section 23.5
Sterling, sterling silver or solid silver only at 925 per thousand or more; coin silver at 900. The bare word silver needs a fineness before it.
ISO 11427:2024 and ISO 13756:2024
Potentiometric methods for silver in jewellery alloys, one with potassium bromide and one with sodium or potassium chloride. Ask the report to name its method.
ISO 9202:2026
The current list of standard fineness grades for precious metal alloys. Check which edition your contract cites.
REACH Annex XVII lead, and EN 1811
For the EU, below 0.05 per cent lead by weight in any part, alloy, solder and findings included; nickel release tested to EN 1811 after EN 12472 wear simulation.

What moves the price of silver jewellery

  • Silver weight at the day's rate, quoted in grams per piece.
  • Fineness: Britannia puts more silver in each gram than sterling.
  • The making charge per piece or per gram, shown apart from the metal.
  • Plating: rhodium or gold over a barrier layer adds metal and steps.
  • A new design: moulds and sample charges usually make custom pieces dearer than existing ones.

Lead times and delivery

Time depends on whether the design exists and on the finish. A new design needs a mould and a sample before bulk; plating in gold over a barrier layer, stone setting and an outside assay add time. Changes after sample approval add a round. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum in the quote.

Roptan delivers anywhere in Bangladesh, sealed per piece or set, counted and weighed against the order. Each handover comes with the assay report and the maker's VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3) stating fineness and weight. We know of no Bangladesh law specific to silver jewellery, such as a silver hallmark scheme or a silver export licence.

What we check for this order

  • Assay on a random pieceA piece from bulk is assayed by a named ISO method, and the result is read against the fineness you ordered.
  • Weight per pieceWe weigh pieces in grams against the order and invoice, so a bhori quote converts correctly.
  • Plating and barrier layerOn gold-plated silver we check colour against the sample and ask for the gold thickness and barrier layer in writing.
  • Stamp against the assayThe 925 or other stamp must match the assay; for EU orders, lead and nickel reports must cover solder and findings.

Questions buyers ask

Is a 925 stamp from Bangladesh accepted abroad?

Not as proof. Bangladesh is not a contracting state of the international hallmarking convention, so its stamp carries no common control mark. A test report from a lab, or the destination country's assay office where hallmarking is required, confirms the fineness.

Why does silver jewellery tarnish, and what slows it?

Sulphur compounds in the air, from fuel burning and industry, form black silver sulphide on the surface. Lower-silver alloys tarnish more, since copper also reacts. A tarnish-resistant alloy or a barrier layer under plating slows it; state which you want before sampling.

Does Bangladesh export silver jewellery?

Not in recorded figures. Silver jewellery falls under HS 7113.11, and EPB's FY2025-26 list has no HS 7113 line. Roptan sources silver pieces for buyers in Bangladesh, and for an export order confirms the route and papers with the maker before the order is placed.

Are there Bangladesh rules on hallmarking silver?

No law specific to silver that we know of. The jewellers' association guideline of 2023 makes hallmarking mandatory for its members' ornaments, but reports do not say whether that reaches silver, and it is a trade-body rule, not law. Roptan relies on an assay of your own pieces.

How soon will I hear back about jewellery and watches?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
