Buying imitation jewellery in Bangladesh

Imitation jewellery, also called costume or fashion jewellery, is a base metal shaped into a piece and then plated in gold or silver colour. Shops and online sellers in Bangladesh buy it, and so do importers. EPB records them as a small export line, HS 7117, for FY2025-26.

Its faults sit under the surface: thin plating, nickel leaking through worn gold, lead in a clasp. An imitation jewellery manufacturer in Bangladesh cannot show them in a photo, so Roptan sources from verified makers, writes limits into the order and checks the lot before it ships.

Kinds of imitation jewellery

Plated brass pieces

Brass, usually about two thirds copper and one third zinc, is the usual base for sheet and wire pieces. It plates well but tarnishes as its copper reacts, so sealing matters.

Cast zinc alloy pieces

A zinc die-casting alloy with about 4 per cent aluminium takes electroplating well. It is usually the route for pendants, charms and bold pieces cast in a mould.

Stainless steel pieces

Grade 316L, the low-carbon version of 316, for rings, bangles and chains that must resist tarnish and wear. It can be plated or bare; passivation to ASTM A967 improves corrosion resistance.

Heavy gold-plated pieces

In the trade, usually 2.5 microns or more, against flash plating under half a micron. Choose it for rings and bracelets in daily wear, where a thin layer wears through first.

Findings and parts

Clasps, ear posts, hooks, jump rings, cuff links and studs, sold on their own. In the EU, parts sold for jewellery making face the same lead rule as finished pieces.

How to specify imitation jewellery

Base metal
Name brass, zinc alloy, copper or 316L steel for each design: the base sets how the piece is formed and how it takes plating.
Plating metal and thickness
State metal, colour and a minimum in microns. Trade grades usually run from gold flashed, under 0.5 micron, through gold plated, 0.5 micron or more, to heavy plated.
Layer build
Plating usually goes base metal, copper, nickel, then gold. Nickel adds wear resistance and a barrier, so EU buyers need a nickel release test on finished pieces.
Stones, glass and enamel
List each stone, glass part and enamel. The EU lead rule exempts crystal glass, stones not treated with lead and enamels fused at 500 °C or more, but not metal parts.
Wearer's age
Say adults or children. In the US, ASTM F2999 covers adult jewellery and ASTM F2923 children's jewellery, with different tests.
The minimum basis
Ask whether the minimum counts per design, per plating colour or per order value: three colours can mean three minimums.

Standards, tests and labelling

REACH Annex XVII lead restriction
Lead below 0.05 per cent by weight in any individual part of a jewellery article sold in the EU, findings and plating included.
EN 1811 after EN 12472
EN 1811 measures nickel release from ear posts and skin-contact parts; EN 12472 first simulates wear on coated pieces, since unaged plating can pass yet fail later.
ASTM F2923 and ASTM F2999
The US consumer safety specifications for children's and adult jewellery: name the one matching the wearer.
US FTC Jewelry Guides, 16 CFR Part 23
Gold electroplate needs a durable layer of at least 10 karat and 0.175 micron of fine gold, with the karat stated; heavy gold electroplate needs 2.5 microns.

What moves the price of imitation jewellery

  • A new design: CAD work, a mould and sample charges usually make custom pieces dearer.
  • Plating metal and thickness: more microns cost more and last longer.
  • Base metal: brass, cast zinc alloy and stainless steel cost and work differently.
  • Stones and glass: how many, and how each is set.
  • Order size against the minimum, and lab tests per design and colour.

Lead times and delivery

Time depends mostly on whether the design exists. A new design needs CAD work, a mould and a prototype before bulk; an existing one skips them. Extra plating colours, lab tests on the lot and changes after the sample add time. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.

Roptan delivers anywhere in Bangladesh, to shops, online sellers and corporate buyers, packed per design and plating colour as agreed. Each delivery comes with the packing list, the lab reports the order called for and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying imitation jewellery for export

Imitation jewellery enters under HS 7117: 7117.11 for base-metal cuff links and studs, 7117.19 for other base-metal pieces, 7117.90 for the rest; your broker needs the plating metal and any glass parts. EU buyers claim GSP through a REX statement. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram (Chittagong) or by air and confirms papers per order.

What we check for this order

  • Lab report on this lotLead and nickel results on pieces from your lot, aged first where plated, since supplier declarations alone miss restricted metals.
  • Plating against the orderColour against the approved sample, and thickness readings in microns on pieces from bulk.
  • Findings and postsClasps, ear posts and jump rings against the sample, since EU lead and nickel rules reach every metal part.
  • Wording on the labelFor US orders, a piece called gold plated must carry at least 10 karat gold, with the karat stated beside the term.

Questions buyers ask

What is the difference between gold flashed and gold plated?

Thickness. In the trade, gold flashed or washed usually means under 0.5 micron and gold plated 0.5 micron or more; for the US, gold plated also needs a layer of at least 10 karat. State the microns you want on the order.

Do adult fashion pieces need a lead test for Europe?

Yes. The EU lead restriction covers jewellery in general, rings, brooches and hair accessories included, not only children's pieces. Each metal part, finding and plating must stay below 0.05 per cent lead by weight, so ask for a report on your lot.

Can plated jewellery be made without a nickel layer?

Ask the maker which barrier sits under the gold: nickel is usual for wear resistance, and rhodium also works. For the EU, what decides is a nickel release test to EN 1811 after EN 12472 wear simulation, not a line on a quote.

Does Bangladesh export imitation jewellery?

On a small scale: EPB records HS 7117 exports for FY2025-26, almost all of them base-metal pieces, plated or not. For an export order, Roptan confirms the HS line, the papers and the tests with the maker first.

How soon will I hear back about jewellery and watches?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
