Buying beaded jewellery in Bangladesh

Beaded jewellery is made of small shaped beads strung on thread or soft wire, woven, or glued to a base. Beads come in glass, wood, plastic, metal and stone, and in natural materials such as bone, horn, seed and shell, from under 1 mm to over 1 cm. Shops, online sellers and gift buyers in Bangladesh order necklaces, bracelets, earrings and prayer beads.

The risks in a beaded piece sit in its details: beads that differ from the sample, lead in a coated bead or clasp, beads small enough for a toddler to swallow. Roptan sources from verified makers and checks each of these, so a beaded jewellery manufacturer in Bangladesh is held to your sample, not a photo.

Kinds of beaded jewellery

Seed bead pieces

Small, uniform, roughly round beads, usually glass and a few millimetres or less, woven on or off a loom or strung. Choose them for fine patterns, and approve a sample for colour and size.

Pressed glass bead pieces

Beads stamped from glass rods in machines, which keeps their cost down. Choose them for larger orders where the price per piece matters most to you.

Lampwork bead pieces

Decorative beads worked one at a time in a torch flame. Each takes hand work, so choose them for statement pieces ordered in smaller numbers.

Natural material beads

Wood, bone, horn, seed and shell beads. Ask how each is finished, since painted or coated surfaces are where a lead test is worth having.

Gemstone strands

Natural or reconstructed stones strung as necklaces or bracelets. Stones not treated with lead are outside the EU lead rule, but the clasp and wire are not.

Prayer beads

Strings such as the misbaha. Give the bead count, bead size, material and the end piece or tassel, and approve a sample before bulk starts.

How to specify beaded jewellery

Bead size in millimetres
Give size in mm with a tolerance. The aught system, such as 11/0 at about 1.8 to 2.1 mm, varies between bead makers, so it cannot set size alone.
Bead material and making
Name glass, wood, stone or metal, and for glass whether wound, drawn, pressed or lampwork, since the method sets cost and uniformity.
Thread or wire
State the thread or flexible wire and, for woven pieces, the beading thread. Narrow seed bead holes need fine thread.
Clasp and metal parts
Name the clasp, jump rings, ear wires and spacers with their metal, since these carry the lead and nickel tests.
Count and quantity basis
Give beads per strand and strand length as well as grams. Seed beads are often sold by weight, so convert a quote in strands or pieces.
Wearer's age
Say adult or child. Children's pieces bring stricter tests, and loose beads are a small parts hazard for under-threes.

Tests and rules for beaded jewellery

REACH Annex XVII lead restriction
For the EU, below 0.05 per cent lead by weight in any part, metal beads, clasps, wire and findings included. Crystal glass and untreated natural stones are exempt.
EN 1811 after EN 12472
Nickel release from clasps, ear wires and other metal parts in skin contact, aged first where coated.
ASTM F2923 and ASTM F2999
The US safety specifications for children's and adult jewellery; children's beaded pieces fall under the first.
16 CFR Part 1501
The US small parts test for articles meant for children under three; beads that come loose as small parts make such an article fail.

What moves the price of beaded jewellery

  • Bead material: natural stones and precious metal parts cost more and often carry higher minimums.
  • How the beads are made: pressed glass costs less than hand-worked lampwork.
  • Size and hole uniformity: more even beads usually cost more.
  • Beads per piece and the hand assembly time they take.
  • Clasps and metal parts, and new moulds for custom bead shapes.

Lead times and delivery

Time depends on the beads and the design. Pieces from beads in stock are quicker than custom shapes that need a mould, or colours that must be matched. Lampwork, woven patterns and long strands take longer to assemble than simple stringing, and lab tests on coated beads and clasps add time. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum in the quote.

Roptan delivers anywhere in Bangladesh, to shops, online sellers and gift buyers, packed per design and colour as agreed. Each delivery comes with the packing list, any lab reports the order called for and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3) from the seller.

What we check for this order

  • Bead size against sampleWe measure beads in millimetres against the approved sample, since aught sizes alone vary between bead makers.
  • Count and strand lengthWe count beads per strand and measure length, and check the gram basis of the quote against the pieces.
  • Lead report on partsFor EU orders, a lead report on coated beads, metal beads, clasps and wire from your lot.
  • Nickel report on claspsFor EU orders, a nickel release report on clasps and ear wires that touch skin.

Questions buyers ask

What does 11/0 mean on seed beads?

It is a size code in the aught system: the larger the number, the smaller the bead, from 1/0 down to about 24/0. An 11/0 bead is about 1.8 to 2.1 mm, but sizes vary between makers, so give millimetres and approve a sample.

Do glass beads need a lead test for Europe?

Crystal glass is exempt from the EU lead rule for jewellery, and so are untreated natural stones. Metal beads, clasps, wire and findings are not, and painted or coated beads are worth testing. Ask for a report on your lot that names the parts tested.

Can you supply beaded pieces for small children?

Yes, with stricter checks. In the US, children's jewellery falls under ASTM F2923, and articles for under-threes must pass the small parts test in 16 CFR Part 1501, which beads that come loose can fail. Say the age group on the brief so the right tests are ordered.

Which HS code covers beaded jewellery?

It depends on the bead and the clasp. Finished pieces with base-metal fittings usually go under HS 7117, loose glass beads under 7018, and natural stones strung without a clasp under 7116. Your customs broker confirms the line from the bead material and fittings.

How soon will I hear back about jewellery and watches?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
