Buying gold jewellery in Bangladesh

Gold jewellery is sold on two numbers: karat and weight. Bangladeshi shops sell it by the bhori, about 11.664 g, while buyers abroad work in grams and fineness. Jewellers, retailers, corporate buyers and families in Bangladesh order it; EPB lists no gold jewellery export line at all for FY2025-26.

A stamp is not proof of what is inside. A gold jewellery manufacturer in Bangladesh also works under the Gold Policy 2018 rules on gold import and trade. Roptan sources from verified jewellers, asks for the gold source papers, has a piece assayed and checks weights before handover.

Kinds of gold jewellery by karat

22 karat (916)

About 91.6 per cent gold, the standard jewellery grade in India and the grade Bangladeshi shops usually quote by the bhori. Choose it where buyers expect high gold content.

21 karat (875)

Twenty-one parts in 24, or 87.5 per cent gold. One of the four grades the jewellers' association guideline allows its members to sell, alongside 18, 22 and 24 karat.

18 karat (750)

75 per cent gold, the typical grade in much of Europe, shown as 750 in UK hallmarks. Choose it for export pieces where buyers expect European fineness marks.

White gold

Gold alloyed with white metals; some white golds contain nickel. For EU buyers, ask what the alloy holds and ask for a nickel release test on the finished piece.

Lower karats for export

14 karat (585) is typical in the US and 9 karat (375) is a recognised grade abroad. Ask whether the maker works them, since local practice centres on higher karats.

How to specify gold jewellery

Karat and fineness
Give the karat and the fineness in parts per thousand, for example 22 karat (916), and the grade list your contract follows, such as ISO 9202.
Purity tolerance
Set how far below the mark a test may fall. US practice allows 3 parts per thousand for gold without solder and 7 where the tested part contains solder.
Weight in grams
State net gold weight per piece in grams with a tolerance. A bhori is about 11.664 g and 16 ana make a bhori, so convert any local quote.
Solder, findings and stones
List clasps, hooks, solder and stones. Each counts as a part under the EU lead rule, and solder lowers the fineness of the piece.
Local or export order
Say where the pieces will be sold: gold imported under bond may go only into pieces that are exported.
Stamp and marks
Say which marks you need. Bangladesh is not a contracting state of the hallmarking convention, so its marks carry no common mark abroad.

Standards, assay and Bangladesh rules

ISO 9202:2026
The 2026 edition of the list of standard fineness grades for precious metal alloys. Check which edition your contract cites.
ISO 11426:2021
Gold by cupellation, the fire assay. Ask for a certificate naming the method and edition.
US FTC Jewelry Guides, 16 CFR Part 23
Karat gold must meet its marked fineness within tolerance, and solid gold may not describe a plated piece or one with a base core.
REACH Annex XVII lead restriction
For the EU, below 0.05 per cent lead by weight in each part, solder and findings included; natural stones not treated with lead are exempt.
Bangladesh Gold Policy 2018
Approved on 2 October 2018 and amended on 3 June 2021, it stays in force while a 2026 revision is a draft. Traders declare gold stocks to the VAT authorities and file monthly sales statements.

What moves the price of gold jewellery

  • Gold weight at the rate on the day the price is fixed.
  • Karat: 22 karat puts more gold in each gram than 18 karat.
  • The making charge for the design and its finishing, in addition to the gold.
  • Stones and setting, priced on top of the gold and making.
  • Assay and lab reports, priced per design or per lot.
  • For local orders, old gold given in exchange, deducted by weight.

Lead times and delivery

Time depends on the design and the gold. An existing design is quicker than a new model; stone setting, an outside assay and changes after sample approval add time. For export, the gold route under licence or bond is settled first. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum in the quote.

Roptan delivers anywhere in Bangladesh, sealed per piece or set. Each handover is counted and weighed against the order in front of your receiver, and comes with the assay report and the jeweller's VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3) stating karat and weight.

What we check for this order

  • Gold source papersWe ask the jeweller for the papers showing legally imported gold, or the bond route for an export order, before the order is placed.
  • Assay on a random pieceA piece from bulk goes for fire assay to ISO 11426, with the result read against your karat and tolerance.
  • Weight per pieceWe weigh pieces in grams against the order and the invoice, so a local bhori quote converts correctly.
  • Marks against the assayThe karat stamp on each design must match the assay result; for EU orders, a lead report must cover solder and findings.

Questions buyers ask

Is hallmarking required for gold jewellery in Bangladesh?

The Gold Policy 2018 calls for hallmarks on gold bars at import and sale. The jewellers' association guideline of 2023 asks members to laser-engrave a hallmark showing the quality on every ornament, a trade-body rule, not a law. We could not confirm which body marks finished jewellery today, so Roptan relies on an independent assay.

Can gold jewellery be exported from Bangladesh?

Yes, as a regulated activity. The 2021 amendment of the Gold Policy aims to help export of gold jewellery, and gold imported under bond may be re-exported as finished pieces but not sold locally. EPB shows no gold jewellery line for FY2025-26. Roptan confirms the export route and papers with the jeweller per order.

Is the revised Gold Policy of 2026 in force?

No. A revised Gold Policy is in draft, and comments closed on 9 August 2026; we know of no final text. Orders follow the Gold Policy 2018 as amended in June 2021. Roptan still asks the jeweller for papers showing the gold was legally imported.

Why should a quote be in grams, not bhori?

Because contracts, invoices abroad and assay reports work in grams and parts per thousand. A bhori is about 11.664 g, so rounding on many pieces adds up. Ask for net gold weight in grams, stones excluded, and the fineness for each design.

How soon will I hear back about jewellery and watches?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
