Buying uppers in Bangladesh
The upper is the part of a shoe that holds it on the foot: a few straps on a sandal, a closed, stitched assembly on a boot or trainer. Shoe factories buy closed uppers ready to last, importers buy them to finish shoes at home, and Bangladesh reports uppers under an export line of their own.
A shoe upper manufacturer in Bangladesh has to match your last in every size and keep its seams when the upper is pulled over it. Roptan sources from verified makers, writes the material, size run and tests into the order, has a trial pair lasted and inspects the uppers before they leave.
How to brief a shoe upper manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Form of delivery
- Open cut parts, a stitched closed upper, or an upper already fixed to an insole. Customs lists them apart, and the price basis differs.
- Last and graded patterns
- The upper is joined to the insole at the lasting margin, so send the last number or drawing and patterns graded for every size.
- Size system
- State EU, UK, US or Mondopoint, which gives foot length in millimetres. Sizes are not fully standardised, so name one system.
- Material for each part
- Full-grain or corrected-grain leather, or PU or PVC coated material, for each panel, the lining and the tongue, with thickness.
- Closure
- Laces, buckles, zip, elastic, hook and loop or snaps: it changes the tongue, eyelet stay and trims supplied.
- Monsoon packing
- Bangladesh has heavy seasonal rain and high humidity. Ask for dry cartons with moisture control, counted by size.
Tests and limits for shoe uppers
- ISO 17693
- Tests whether an upper survives lasting. Ask for it on a new pattern or material before the first bulk order.
- ISO 17696, ISO 17697 and ISO 17704
- Tear, seam and abrasion strength of uppers and linings, on bulk material, with test pieces conditioned to ISO 17709.
- ISO 17694 and ISO 17698
- Flex and delamination resistance, the usual tests for coated and laminated synthetics, where a cracked or lifting coating spoils the shoe.
- Chromium VI to ISO 17075-1
- EU REACH bars leather parts touching the skin at 3 mg/kg or more; other rules and buyer lists can set a lower figure. Test against your restricted substances list.
Lead times and delivery
We give no typical lead time for uppers alone; it depends on the maker and the order. Time is shorter when the maker already holds your patterns, dies and material. It grows with new graded patterns, a trial lasting round, leather dyed to order or imported material, as most footwear inputs in Bangladesh are. Roptan confirms dates and the minimum per size in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh, Roptan delivers to your shoe factory or export processing zone, uppers bundled in pairs and counted by size, with the packing list, the lot's test reports, the named leather source where you asked for one and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying uppers for export
Uppers have their own EPB line, HS 640610: exports were 7.08 million US dollars in FY2025-26, about half to Ukraine, with Italy and India next. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram, or air freight from Dhaka for samples, with the invoice, a packing list by size, the certificate of origin, the seller's ERC, test reports and an ISO 2859-1 inspection report.
Questions buyers ask
Can you supply uppers already fixed to an insole?
Yes, when the maker has your last and insole board. Customs treats that assembly as a different item from a loose upper, so say which form you want: the paperwork, the price basis and the trial lasting follow it.
Can Bangladeshi leather meet an LWG requirement?
Often not. Many local tanneries lack Leather Working Group certification, largely because the central effluent plant at Savar has struggled to meet the required standards. If your buyer demands it, the quote names a certified tannery, local or imported, and we check the certificate.
Should a synthetic upper be PU or PVC?
PU for comfort: it is usually washable and can breathe. PVC is usually less breathable and harder to clean, but keeps water out and usually costs less. For either, ask for flex and delamination results on bulk material.
Which chromium VI limit applies to leather uppers?
It depends on the market and your buyer. EU REACH bars leather parts touching the skin at 3 mg/kg or more, tested to ISO 17075-1, and other rules or buyer lists may set a lower figure. Send your restricted substances list and we test the bulk leather against it.
How soon will I hear back about footwear components?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
