Kinds of scroll chiller

Fixed speed, several compressors

Two or more scroll compressors step on and off as the load changes. Ask how many steps the unit has and how it holds the water temperature between them.

With a variable speed compressor

One compressor in the set runs on a variable speed drive, which raises part-load efficiency. Choose it where the load spends long hours below the peak.

Modular scroll chillers

How to specify a scroll chiller

Load: The duty in TR or kW (1 TR is 3.517 kW), with the peak and the hours at part load.
Water temperatures: Comfort cooling is usually rated at 12 °C in and 7 °C out. A different spread changes the water flow for the same load.
Compressors and circuits: The number varies by model. Ask how many compressors and refrigerant circuits there are, and how the unit stages them at low load.
Capacity at your roof air: Nominal tonnage is not the cooling at every outdoor temperature. Ask for capacity at your hottest roof air; summer highs usually reach 38 to 41 °C.
Clearance and coils: Hot air that recirculates raises power and cuts capacity, so keep clear space around the condenser. Coils are copper and aluminium: ask about protection near the coast.

It depends on the model. Most switch compressors on and off in steps, and some run one compressor at variable speed. Ask the seller how many steps there are, how low the unit can run and how it holds the leaving water temperature on a mild day.

Scroll or screw: which should I choose?

Compare them on your own duty. Scroll compressors are compact, smooth and simple; on smaller industrial chillers, scroll is often chosen where the budget calls for it and screw where performance does. Ask for both rated at your load, water temperatures and roof air, with full-load and part-load figures.

Will a modular plant keep cooling if one module fails?

The remaining modules carry the load they are sized for. Decide how much cooling must stay on with one module out, then size the modules to it. Remember that AHRI certifies each catalogue module, not the joined array, so ask for the rating of the module quoted.

Is a scroll chiller quiet enough for a roof near homes?
