Buying screw chillers in Bangladesh

A screw chiller cools water with semi-hermetic rotary screw compressors, one of the three common chiller compressor types beside scroll and centrifugal. A slide valve lets the compressor unload without steps, so the chiller follows a load that rises and falls. It is usually chosen for larger duties in buildings and process plants, air cooled or water cooled.

Kinds of screw chiller

Air cooled screw chillers

A packaged outdoor unit with no tower. Simpler to run, but rate it at your hottest roof air, because ratings at mild conditions overstate output.

Water cooled screw chillers

An indoor unit with a condenser water circuit to a cooling tower. More efficient, but rate it at the monsoon wet bulb the tower will face.

Slide valve, fixed speed

The slide valve unloads the compressor steplessly at fixed motor speed. Ask the seller how low the chiller unloads before it cycles.

Variable speed drive

A drive varies compressor speed and raises part-load efficiency. Choose it where the chiller spends most hours at part load, which is the usual case.

How to specify a screw chiller

Load and units: The duty in TR or kW (1 TR is 3.517 kW), with the peak and the hours at part load. State it in one unit and convert once.
Water temperatures: Comfort cooling is usually rated at 12 °C return and 7 °C leaving. Give your own figures and the flow.
Rating conditions: Air cooled: capacity at the hottest roof air. Water cooled: at the condenser water your tower gives at monsoon wet bulb. Summer highs usually reach 38 to 41 °C.
Part-load figures: IPLV weights load points of 100, 75, 50 and 25 percent at about 1, 42, 45 and 12 percent. It rates one chiller, so ask for figures at your own conditions too.
Sound: Screw compressors run smoothly with limited vibration. Still state a limit and ask for sound power measured to EN 12102-1.
Plant location: Dhaka floods almost every year. A ground or basement plant needs raised plinths and electrical gear above the likely water line.

Ratings to ask a screw chiller supplier in Bangladesh for

AHRI 550/590: The rating standard for vapour compression water chillers. Its IPLV uses 44 °F (about 6.7 °C) leaving water; a rating at other conditions is called NPLV, so check which one you are given.
AHRI certification: AHRI tests published capacity, efficiency, water pressure drop and IPLV of catalogue models. Custom units and multi-chiller arrays are not certified.
EN 14511 and EN 14825:2022: The European basis: the 2022 parts of EN 14511 for tested ratings, EN 14825 for part load and seasonal figures.
US federal efficiency rules: US government buyers must have performance measured to AHRI 550/590, with a full-load and a part-load floor. They are not Bangladesh rules, but they show what to ask for.
Kigali Amendment: Bangladesh ratified it on 8 June 2020 and is working towards an 85 percent cut in HFC use by 2045. Ask about refrigerant supply for service.

What moves the price of a screw chiller

Variable speed drive or fixed speed with slide valve.
Number of compressors and refrigerant circuits.
Air cooled or water cooled condenser, and the tower, pumps and treatment that come with water cooling.
Efficiency at full and part load: better figures cost more to buy and less to run.
The refrigerant, and electricity over a life that can pass 25 years.

Lead times and delivery

Screw chillers are usually built to order. The factory slot, any witnessed test, sea freight to Chattogram and customs clearance add to the time, and large units may need special transport. Roptan confirms the delivery date in the quote after the seller has the full specification.

Large screw chillers are heavy, so we plan the rigging route, the structural capacity of the plant room or roof and the crane with you. The seller sets the unit on anti-vibration mounts, wires the starting equipment and commissions it. Why should I look at IPLV instead of full-load kW per TR?

Because a chiller spends most hours below full load. IPLV weights the 75 and 50 percent points most, at about 42 and 45 percent, and full load at about 1 percent. A screw chiller with a variable speed drive can show a much better IPLV than its full-load figure suggests.

Is a variable speed screw chiller worth it?

Usually, where the load varies through the day and the year. The drive raises part-load efficiency, so it pays back where the chiller spends long hours at part load and adds less where it runs near full load. Ask for both versions rated at your own load profile and compare the yearly energy.

Do I need a cooling tower for a screw chiller?

Only for a water cooled unit, which sits indoors and sends its heat through condenser water to a tower. An air cooled screw chiller is a packaged outdoor unit with no tower. The water cooled unit is more efficient, but it brings the tower, pumps and water treatment with it.

Are screw chillers noisy?
