Buying absorption chillers in Bangladesh

An absorption chiller makes chilled water from heat instead of an electric compressor. The heat comes as steam, hot water, direct firing or waste heat, and the usual commercial cycle uses water as the refrigerant and lithium bromide as the absorbent, under almost complete vacuum. Its own electrical load is small, so it is considered where electricity is costly or unreliable and spare heat exists.

An absorption chiller supplier in Bangladesh should start from your heat, not from a catalogue size. Roptan asks verified sellers to rate the machine on the heat source, temperature and flow you can supply, to size the tower for the absorption duty and to name the rating basis. We deliver; the seller installs and commissions.

Kinds of absorption chiller

Single-effect

The simpler cycle, with a COP often about 0.5. It needs more heat per ton of cooling and suits low-grade heat, such as hot water, that the site has in quantity.

Double-effect

A COP up to about 1.0, so it uses less heat per ton, and costs more. Choose it where the heat is limited or has to be bought.

Direct-fired

The chiller burns fuel itself, so it brings a fuel line and flue work. Running cost then follows the fuel price, so compare it with an electric chiller on your own tariffs.

Waste heat driven

Runs on exhaust or hot water from a gas turbine, a water heater or another process. With a turbine it forms a trigeneration set: power, hot water and cooling from one fuel.

How to brief an absorption chiller supplier in Bangladesh

Heat source
State the type (steam, hot water, direct fire or exhaust), its temperature or pressure, and the heat flow available. The cycle is sized to the heat input.
Cooling load and water
The duty in TR or kW (1 TR is 3.517 kW). Comfort cooling is usually rated at 12 °C in and 7 °C out.
Tower and condenser water
For the same cooling an absorption chiller needs a much larger tower. Size the tower, pumps and make-up water for it, at the high monsoon wet bulb.
Make-up water
Open towers lose water by evaporation, blowdown and drift. State your water quality, since hard or dirty water fouls tubes.
Electrical
The solution and refrigerant pumps draw little, very rarely above 15 kW, but give the supply and any backup.
Plant room
Dhaka floods almost every year. A ground or basement room needs raised plinths, drainage and electrical gear above the likely water line.

Ratings, tests and water safety

Rating basis
AHRI 550/590 covers vapour compression chillers and EN 14511 electrically driven ones, so neither covers absorption. Ask which standard the quote uses and at what conditions.
Commissioning on your heat
Ask for capacity recorded at commissioning on your real heat input, so the rating is shown on the supply the chiller will run on.
Tower water management
Cooling towers can grow Legionella and need a water management programme. Agree who treats the tower water after handover and what that covers.

What moves the price of an absorption chiller

  • The cycle: double-effect costs more than single-effect and uses less heat per ton.
  • The capacity, and the heat input it must be sized to.
  • The larger cooling tower, condenser pumps and make-up water.
  • The heat source: free waste heat can make running cost low, bought fuel may not.
  • Site works: heat supply piping, the gas line and flue for direct firing.

Lead times and delivery

Absorption chillers are usually built to order, and the factory slot, sea freight to Chattogram and customs clearance add to the time. The heat supply connections, the larger tower and any flue are separate works that often set the start-up date. Roptan confirms each date in the quote once the heat source is defined.

We deliver the chiller and plan rigging into the plant room with you. The seller connects the steam or hot water piping, or the gas line and flue for a direct-fired unit, the larger cooling tower and the condenser water circuit, then commissions the unit. Handover usually includes the commissioning record, manuals, the water treatment plan and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

What we check for this order

  • Heat balanceWe check that the heat you can supply matches the heat input the seller sized the chiller to.
  • Rating basis namedWe ask each seller which rating standard and conditions the quote uses, since the usual chiller standards do not apply.
  • Tower sized for absorptionWe check the tower, pumps and make-up water are sized for the absorption duty, not an electric chiller's.
  • Cooling with one machine outWe set in writing how much cooling must stay on if one machine stops, including shared pumps, power and controls.

Questions buyers ask

What heat can drive an absorption chiller?

Steam, hot water, direct firing, or waste heat such as exhaust or hot water from a gas turbine or another process. Tell the seller the type, temperature or pressure and the heat flow, and ask for a rating on that supply. If the heat is thin, the chiller will not reach its rated capacity.

Why is its COP so much lower than an electric chiller's?

Because it is driven by heat, not electricity, so the figures measure different inputs. A single-effect machine often runs at about 0.5, a double-effect machine up to about 1.0, against about 4.0 or more for an electric chiller with a cooling tower. The question is what your heat costs.

Does an absorption chiller use much electricity?

Very little. Its own pumps very rarely draw more than 15 kW. Allow, though, for the larger cooling tower fans and condenser water pumps, which are bigger than for an electric chiller of the same cooling, and include them when you compare running costs.

Is it worth it for my site?

It depends on the heat. On free waste heat an absorption chiller can be cheap to run; on bought fuel it may not be. Ask the seller to compare it with an electric chiller using your own heat supply, fuel and electricity costs, and your hours of operation.

How soon will I hear back about chillers?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the capacity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
