Buying nickel and stainless scrap in Bangladesh
Stainless and nickel scrap is offcuts, sheet, tube, turnings and worn parts in stainless steel or nickel alloys, sold on alloy content. About two thirds of the world's nickel goes into stainless steel, so nickel content is what a buyer pays for. Stainless scrap is one of Bangladesh's regular scrap exports, and nickel scrap is shipped too.
The usual loss is a lot sold as 304 that holds 201 or mixed grades. A nickel and stainless scrap exporter in Bangladesh should prove the alloy, so Roptan sources from verified yards, has every lot sorted by analyser with the readings recorded, keeps solids and turnings apart, surveys for radiation and confirms export status before quoting.
What to send a nickel and stainless scrap exporter in Bangladesh
- Grade per lot
- Name 201, 304, 316 or the nickel alloy for each lot. Two grades in one container need separate weights, readings and prices.
- Minimum alloy content
- State the minimum nickel, and molybdenum for 316, and that each lot is read with a handheld XRF analyser, with the readings sent to you.
- Magnetic fraction
- A magnet only separates magnetic stainless types from the usually non-magnetic 300 series. Worked 304 can turn slightly magnetic, so the analyser has the final word.
- Form
- Say solids, sheet, tube or turnings. Solids and turnings of the same grade are priced apart, and turnings need limits for oil and fines.
- What is refused
- Carbon steel attachments, other metals, and any pickling sludge, grinding dust or furnace dust, which are separate wastes and not scrap.
HS lines, export rules and Basel status
- HS 7204.21, 7204.29 and 7503
- Stainless scrap, other alloy steel scrap and nickel scrap are separate lines. The right line on the invoice keeps the customs entry at your end in order.
- Export Policy 2024-27
- The Ministry of Commerce policy, in force to 30 June 2027, lists neither stainless nor nickel scrap as prohibited or conditional. Gazette notices under the Customs Act 2023 can still add a restriction.
- Basel Convention entry B1010
- Nickel scrap, chromium scrap and iron and steel scrap in metallic, non-dispersible form are on the non-hazardous list. Dusts and sludges from stainless work are not covered by it.
- Radiation survey
- Bangladesh prohibits the export of radioactive material, so every container is surveyed before sealing and the report travels with the papers.
Lead times and delivery
No reliable typical lead time exists for stainless or nickel scrap. Dates depend on whether a yard holds the grade sorted, how long analyser sorting and the radiation survey take, and container space at Chattogram. Roptan confirms the loading date and any minimum tonnage in the quote.
Buyers inside Bangladesh can order through Roptan too. We deliver by truck to your plant or yard, with each grade weighed apart at loading and on arrival, the analyser readings, the radiation reading, weighbridge slips and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying nickel and stainless scrap for export
For export we quote FOB Chattogram, or CFR on request. Each grade is bagged or loaded apart, and every container is photographed and weighed before sealing. Papers usually include the commercial invoice on the right HS line, a weight list by grade, the bill of lading, a certificate of origin, the analyser readings and the radiation report.
Questions buyers ask
Can stainless steel scrap be exported from Bangladesh?
Yes. Stainless and nickel scrap are on neither the prohibited nor the conditional list of the Export Policy 2024-27, and solid nickel and steel scrap are on the Basel non-hazardous list. Rules can change by gazette notice, so Roptan checks for any later restriction each time we quote.
How do I know a lot is 304 and not 201?
By the analyser readings, not by a magnet. Both are usually non-magnetic, and 201 carries less nickel because manganese and nitrogen take its place. Ask for nickel readings per lot and set a minimum in the contract; we send the readings before loading.
Is 316 worth buying apart from 304?
If your melt needs molybdenum, yes. 316 adds molybdenum for acid and pitting resistance, and it is usually priced above 304 for that reason. Mixed into a 304 lot, the molybdenum is usually not paid for, so keep the grades apart.
Do you ship stainless turnings?
Yes, as their own grade. Turnings are priced apart from solids of the same alloy. Tell us the grade and your limits for oil and fines, and we have a sample read by analyser before the lot is bagged and weighed.
How soon will I hear back about metal scrap?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
