Buying copper scrap in Bangladesh
Copper scrap is used copper wire, cable, tube, bus bar, motor windings and cuttings, sold for remelting by grade and copper content. Copper is typically the third most recycled metal by volume, and recycled copper supplies about a third of world demand. Bangladesh exports copper scrap regularly to refiners and mills that buy against a code word.
The risk is a lot one grade below the offer, or a lot that is not plain scrap at all. A copper scrap exporter in Bangladesh should check both, so Roptan sources from verified yards, has each lot sorted to your code word, assayed and surveyed for radiation, and confirms its export status first.
What to tell a copper scrap exporter in Bangladesh
- Code word
- Write the ISRI code word, now published by ReMA, for each grade. Two grades in one container need separate weights and separate prices.
- Copper content and assay
- State the minimum copper content per grade and who assays a sample, and where. Content decides both the price and whether the lot meets the grade.
- Impurities
- Set limits for iron, tin, zinc and nickel. Lower-purity scrap is typically melted to black copper of about 70 to 90 percent before refining, which costs the buyer.
- Coatings and attachments
- Say whether tinned wire, solder, brass fittings or steel attachments are allowed in each grade, and how they are deducted.
- Pricing basis
- Agree the reference metal price, the discount or percentage for each grade, and the date it is fixed, since clean grades move with the metal market.
Code words, export rules and Basel status
- ISRI (ReMA) scrap specifications
- The grade reference for copper, from Barley to Druid. US Schedule B notes use the same code words, so a contract can cite them without translation.
- Export Policy 2024-27
- The Ministry of Commerce policy, in force to 30 June 2027, does not list copper scrap as prohibited or conditional. Gazette notices under the Customs Act 2023 can still restrict it.
- Basel Convention entries B1010 and B1070
- Copper scrap in solid form, and copper waste in dispersible form unless it carries hazardous constituents, are on the non-hazardous list. Contamination can change a lot's status.
- Radiation survey
- Export of radioactive material is prohibited in Bangladesh, so a survey of each lot before loading is a legal step, and buyers usually ask for the report too.
Lead times and delivery
No reliable typical lead time exists for copper scrap. The date depends on whether a yard holds the grade sorted, how long assay and radiation reports take, whether insulated cable needs a Basel check, and container space at Chattogram. Roptan confirms the loading date and any minimum tonnage in the quote.
Buyers inside Bangladesh can order through Roptan too. We deliver by truck to your plant, with each grade weighed apart at loading and on arrival, the assay and radiation reports, photos of the sort and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying copper scrap for export
For export we quote FOB Chattogram, or CFR on request. Grades are bagged or baled apart and photographed in the container before sealing. Papers usually include the commercial invoice, a weight list by grade, the bill of lading, a certificate of origin and the assay and radiation reports.
Questions buyers ask
Can copper scrap be exported from Bangladesh?
Yes. Copper scrap is on neither the prohibited nor the conditional list of the Export Policy 2024-27, and clean copper in solid form is on the Basel non-hazardous list. The Government can still restrict goods by gazette notice, so Roptan checks for any later restriction each time we quote.
What is the difference between Barley, Berry and Birch?
Typically, Barley is bare, uncoated, unalloyed wire; Berry is clean unalloyed wire and cable in the heavy copper class; Birch is miscellaneous unalloyed wire with a lower copper content. Put the code word and your minimum content in the contract.
How is copper scrap priced?
Against the copper market. Each grade carries a discount or a percentage of the reference price, fixed on an agreed date. The assay and the impurity limits decide whether the lot earns its grade, so agree who assays the sample before you sign.
Do you supply insulated copper cable?
Sometimes. Clean insulated cable can be non-hazardous under Basel, but cable with certain sheaths is not. We check the sheath and the Basel entry before quoting, and price it on recoverable copper, so ask for a sample to be assayed.
How soon will I hear back about metal scrap?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
