Buying mountain bikes in Bangladesh
A mountain bike is built for riding off road, usually on a suspension fork and, on most current models, with disc brakes. Importers and own-brand sellers buy them in model runs; a 2023 press report put about 80 percent of Bangladesh's bicycle exports in the EU.
A label such as MTB does not tell a plant how strong the frame and fork must be; the riding discipline does. Roptan turns your discipline, geometry and parts list into one brief for a verified mountain bike manufacturer in Bangladesh, checks that the lab report covers the exact model, and inspects the lot before it ships.
How to brief a mountain bike manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Discipline and frame sizes
- Name the discipline and the frame sizes in the run, with a geometry drawing.
- Frame alloy and tubes
- Name the alloy, such as hi-tensile steel, 4130 chromoly, or 6061 or 7005 aluminium, and whether tubes are butted. Aluminium is lighter than steel but less strong.
- Fork
- State travel in millimetres, coil or air spring, and lockout. A coil spring keeps a near-constant rate; an air spring gets firmer as the fork compresses.
- Brakes
- Cable or hydraulic disc, rotor size, and which lever works the front brake for your market.
- Bottom bracket and headset
- Specify frame and cranks as a pair: a threaded 68 or 73 mm shell, or press-fit. Give the steerer, usually 28.6 mm or tapered to a 38.1 mm lower bearing.
- Coating for a humid climate
- July humidity in Bangladesh usually reaches 94 to 100 percent. Ask for pretreatment before powder coating, adhesion by ISO 2409 cross-cut and thickness by ISO 2808.
Standards and test reports for mountain bikes
- ISO 4210-2:2023
- The safety standard for mountain bikes, replacing the 2015 edition. Ask for a report naming each test part and edition, on your exact frame, fork and parts.
- Severe use is outside ISO 4210-2
- Bikes designed and equipped for severe use, such as sanctioned competition or stunting, are excluded. For race downhill models, agree the test scope with the lab in writing.
- US 16 CFR 1512
- Mandatory in the US, with its own fork and frame tests, a road test and reflector rules. The bike must comply after the buyer finishes assembly.
- EN 17404:2022
- For electric mountain bikes only: it adds mountain bike requirements to EN 15194.
Lead times and delivery
Time depends on whether the plant already builds a similar frame or must make a new one, on forks, brakes and drivetrain parts that are usually imported and booked ahead, on custom colours, and on samples passing their lab tests first time. Roptan confirms sample and bulk dates, and any minimum order, in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh we deliver boxed or assembled mountain bikes to dealers, clubs and company buyers, counted by model, size and colour. Ask for assembled bikes with brakes bled and gears indexed. You receive the owner's manual, the inspection report and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying mountain bikes for export
Mountain bikes are exported under HS 8712, the line for all non-motorised bicycles, and Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram. The EU's latest review of its bicycle duties counts Bangladesh among the main sources outside China and does not list it for anti-dumping duty, but ask where frames and forks are made and confirm duty with a customs adviser. Origin rules for any duty preference are confirmed for your destination before you order.
Questions buyers ask
Which wheel size should I write on the order?
The bead seat diameter in millimetres as well as the inch name: 559 mm for 26 inch, 584 mm for 27.5 inch (650B), 622 mm for 29 inch. Inch names are trade labels; rims and tyres are made to the millimetre figure.
Does an ISO 4210-2 report cover a downhill bike?
Not always. ISO 4210-2 excludes bicycles designed and equipped for severe use, such as sanctioned competition or stunting. For race downhill or freeride models, agree the test scope with the lab before samples are made, and check what the report actually tested.
Air fork or coil fork?
A coil spring keeps a near-constant rate through its travel; an air spring gets progressively firmer, and usually costs more. State the choice, travel and lockout, and approve the fork on the sample, since a different fork changes what the test report describes.
Is an ISO report enough for the US market?
No. In the US, 16 CFR 1512 is mandatory and a bicycle that does not comply is a banned article. Among its tests, the front fork must absorb at least 39.5 J without fracture. Ask for both reports.
How soon will I hear back about bicycles?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
