Buying bicycle parts in Bangladesh

Bicycle parts are bought by bicycle assemblers in Bangladesh and abroad and by the aftermarket. Some are made locally: press reports describe Bangladeshi factories making tyres, tubes, brakes, frames, forks, handles, saddles, pedals and grips, while many components are still imported. Parts exports are small beside complete bicycles.

A part fails at the moment it meets the frame: a rim, thread or steerer one size off stops a line. Roptan turns your drawings and ISO designations into one brief for a verified bicycle part manufacturer in Bangladesh, fit-tests a sample on a real frame and inspects the lot before it ships.

Kinds of bicycle part

Wheels, rims and spokes

Rims are now normally aluminium alloy, built with 24, 28, 32 or 36 spokes. Rims for rim brakes need a smooth parallel braking surface, so order rim and brake type together.

Brakes

Rim brakes (caliper or V-type), mechanical or hydraulic discs, enclosed drum brakes, and coaster brakes in the rear hub. Choose by bike type, wet use and the market's rules.

Drive and gearing parts

Internal hub gears come in 3, 5, 7, 8, 11 and 14 speeds; derailleur systems are the alternative. Bottom brackets and cranks must match: threaded, press-fit or square taper.

Steering parts

Headsets, stems and handlebars, for 25.4 mm, 28.6 mm or tapered 38.1 mm steerers. Threaded and threadless headsets need matching steerers.

Saddles, grips and pedals

The parts a rider touches. For the EU, their rubber and plastic surfaces need PAH tests.

Racks, lights and mudguards

Fitted parts for city and trekking bikes. Racks are tested to ISO 11243:2023; lights and reflectors to the ISO 6742 series, 2023 editions.

How to specify a bicycle part

Rim and tyre size
Order by ISO 5775 bead seat diameter: 406 mm for 20 inch, 507 mm for 24, 559 mm for 26, 584 mm for 650B, 622 mm for 700C and 29 inch.
Threads and shells
For bottom brackets, give the shell type and thread, such as ISO/English 1.37 inch by 24 TPI, or the press-fit standard by name.
Steerer and stack
Give steerer diameter, threaded or threadless, and stack height, so headset, stem and fork fit together.
Drawing and sample
Send a dimensioned drawing for every part, and approve a sample fitted on a real frame before bulk.
Finish
For coated metal parts, ask for adhesion by ISO 2409 cross-cut, thickness by ISO 2808 and salt spray to ISO 9227 with hours you set.
Packing for humid air
July humidity in Bangladesh usually reaches 94 to 100 percent. Ask for dry cartons and VCI wrap or oiled bright parts.

Standards and tests for bicycle parts

ISO 5775-1:2023
Tyre designations and dimensions for clincher, tubeless, tubeless-ready and tube-type tyres; it replaced the 2014 edition. Tubeless tyres need tubeless-compatible rims.
US 16 CFR 1512
Sets part-level rules: rims keep spokes and tyre under a 2000 N side load, chains reach at least 8010 N, and inflation pressure is moulded on the sidewall in letters at least 3.2 mm high.
REACH Annex XVII entry 50
Caps each listed PAH at 1 mg/kg in rubber or plastic parts that touch the skin, naming bicycles as an example. Grips, saddle covers and pedals are the usual parts to test.

What moves the price of a bicycle part

  • Gearing: an internal hub gear usually costs more than a derailleur set.
  • Brakes: hydraulic discs usually cost more than mechanical discs.
  • Wheels: rim material and spoke count change material and building time.
  • Tyres: tubeless tyres and the rims they need usually cost more than tube-type.
  • Finish and tests: coating system, salt spray hours and PAH reports add cost per part.

Lead times and delivery

Time depends on whether the maker already tools the part to your size, on raw material or sub-parts booked from abroad, on finishes and colours, and on samples passing fit and lab tests first time. Mixed orders run to the slowest part. Roptan confirms dates, and any minimum quantity per part, in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver parts to assembly plants, workshops and dealers, packed by part number and size so a line can use them from the carton. Each delivery comes with the packing list, the inspection report, any test reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying bicycle parts for export

Bicycle parts are exported under HS 8714, with sub-lines for frames and forks, rims and spokes, hubs, brakes, saddles, pedals and cranks, and other parts. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram. The EU extends its duty on Chinese bicycles to certain Chinese-origin parts, so ask where each main part is made and confirm duty with a customs adviser. Origin rules are confirmed for your destination before you order.

What we check for this order

  • Sizes against the drawingWe check bead seat diameter, threads and steerer sizes on lot samples against your drawing and ISO designations.
  • Fit on a real frameWe fit sample parts to a real frame and wheel before bulk approval, so a size error shows early.
  • Reports cover the materialWe check that PAH and other test reports name the grip, saddle and pedal materials used in bulk.
  • Final inspectionWe inspect a sample of the lot to ISO 2859-1, with defect classes and limits agreed with you before production.

Questions buyers ask

Why order rims by millimetres, not inches?

Inch names can mislead: 700C and 29 inch carry different names but share one 622 mm rim. The bead seat diameter is the diameter where the tyre bead sits, and ISO 5775 designations use it. Put it on every rim and tyre order.

Which parts need a PAH test for the EU?

Rubber or plastic parts that touch the skin, such as grips, saddle covers and pedals. REACH Annex XVII entry 50 caps each listed PAH at 1 mg/kg in these parts. Ask for a report that names the exact material, since a new grip compound needs a new test.

Will a press-fit crank fit my frame?

Only if both are made to the same pressed standard. Press-fit shells have no threads, and cranks made for one pressed standard may not fit another. Name the standard on both orders, or choose a threaded 68 or 73 mm shell.

Do rims need regular checks?

Yes, on rim brake bikes. The rim is part of the brake and must be checked for wear, because a worn braking surface can fail suddenly. Put rim wear checks in the owner's manual for rim brake models.

How soon will I hear back about bicycles?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
