Buying kids' bikes in Bangladesh
Kids' bikes run from 12 inch balance bikes to 24 inch bikes for older children, with stabilisers, coaster brakes and chain guards on many small sizes. Importers and retail brands buy them in size runs and colours. Child safety rules differ by market and by saddle height, so one range can need several test reports.
A small change, such as a taller seat post, can move a bike into a different standard. Roptan writes the saddle height range into the brief for a verified kids' bike manufacturer in Bangladesh, checks that the test reports cover every size and every part a child touches, and inspects the lot before it ships.
How to specify a kids' bike
- Saddle height
- State the maximum saddle height and the seat post adjustment range. It decides the standard; for the US, give seat height at the highest setting.
- Brakes
- Coaster, hand brakes or both. A coaster brake works only with the cranks roughly level and gives no braking if the chain comes off.
- Stabilisers
- Fitted, removable or not supplied, with the bolt-on strength. They can give a false sense of security, so the manual covers removal.
- Tyres
- Give the ISO 5775 designation. For the US, the recommended inflation pressure must be moulded into the sidewall.
- Paint and coating
- Ask for lead tests on the paint and a cross-cut adhesion test to ISO 2409, with the result on the report.
- Grips and saddle
- Name rubber and plastic parts that touch the skin, so the lab tests them for PAHs and the right limit is applied.
Safety standards and chemical limits for kids' bikes
- ISO 8098:2023
- Safety requirements and test methods for bicycles for young children, with use and care guidance. The 2023 edition replaced the 2014 edition in January 2023.
- ISO 4210-2:2023
- Applies from a maximum saddle height of 635 mm, so the largest kids' sizes may need this report instead.
- US 16 CFR 1512
- A sidewalk bicycle, seat height 635 mm or less, is exempt from reflectors and the fork test and has a lower chain strength rule. Taller bikes take the full rules.
- REACH Annex XVII entry 50
- Limits PAHs in rubber and plastic parts touching the skin to 1 mg/kg each for articles such as bicycles, and 0.5 mg/kg for toys and childcare articles.
Lead times and delivery
Time depends on how many sizes and colours are in the run, whether the plant already has a frame in each size, on brakes and hubs booked from abroad, and on samples passing safety and chemical tests first time; a failed test means new paint or grips and a retest. Roptan confirms the dates, and any minimum, in its quote.
Inside Bangladesh we deliver boxed or assembled kids' bikes to dealers, toy shops and schools, counted by size and colour. Assembled bikes can have stabilisers and reflectors fitted as ordered. You receive the owner's manual, the inspection report and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying kids' bikes for export
Kids' bikes are exported under HS 8712, the line for all non-motorised bicycles, and Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram. Bangladesh is not on the EU's anti-dumping list for bicycles, but the duty follows origin, so ask where frames and forks are made and confirm duty with a customs adviser. Origin rules for any duty preference are confirmed for your destination before you order.
Questions buyers ask
Does wheel size decide which standard applies?
No, saddle height does. ISO 8098 covers bicycles with a maximum saddle height above 435 mm and below 635 mm; from 635 mm, ISO 4210-2 applies. Two bikes on the same wheel size can fall either side of that line, so measure each size with the seat post at its highest setting.
Which standard covers a balance bike?
Ask the test lab before you promise one to retailers. A balance bike has no pedals or drive, and whether a bicycle standard or your market's ride-on toy rules apply depends on the lab's reading and the country. Put the answer in writing before samples are tested.
Is a coaster brake enough on its own?
It brakes the rear wheel only, works only with the cranks roughly level and gives no braking if the chain fails, so a front hand brake is worth specifying with it. US rules allow rear-wheel brakes only, so it is a market decision.
Which lead limit applies in the US?
100 ppm total lead is the statutory limit for parts of children's products. Metal component parts of bicycles covered by a 2009 CPSC stay are held to not more than 300 ppm instead. Ask the lab to state which limit it applied to each part.
How soon will I hear back about bicycles?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
