Buying e-bikes in Bangladesh
An e-bike, or pedelec, is a bicycle whose electric motor helps only while the rider pedals. Europe is the large market: a 2023 press report put European sales at 5.5 million in 2022, one bike in four. Bangladesh's export data does not show e-bikes on their own: they sit in a line that also holds motorcycles, so Roptan confirms each plant's e-bike build record per order.
The motor, battery and controller are normally imported, and each must match the reports that let the bike into your market. Roptan writes them into one brief for a verified e-bike manufacturer in Bangladesh, checks every report against the exact build and inspects the lot before it ships.
How to specify an e-bike
- Motor
- Hub or mid-drive, rated power and assist cut-off speed for your market. For an EU pedelec, 250 W continuous and 25 km/h.
- Sensor and assist
- Cadence, torque or both, and the number of assist levels. Torque sensors usually give smoother power delivery.
- Battery
- Chemistry, cell origin, pack capacity in Wh and the battery management system. LFP cells are usually described as thermally safer.
- Voltage and charger
- State 36 V or 48 V and the charger's input and plug. EN 15194 covers systems up to 48 V d.c. with a 230 V a.c. charger.
- Heat and humidity
- Summer maxima in Bangladesh usually reach 38 to 41 C. Write sealing of the battery and controller, cable glands, connector protection and charging temperature into the order.
E-bike standards and battery rules
- EN 15194:2017+A1:2023
- The EU standard for EPACs, including power management and electrical circuits with charging. It replaced the 2017 edition in September 2023; ask for a report to the amended edition.
- EN 50604-1
- Covers removable lithium-ion packs for light electric vehicles, e-bikes included. A 2025 consolidated edition exists, so ask which edition the report uses.
- Regulation (EU) 2023/1542
- E-bike packs are light means of transport batteries under the EU Batteries Regulation, which applies from 18 February 2024; removability and replaceability rules apply from 18 February 2027.
- US 16 CFR 1512
- Counts an e-bike as a bicycle when it has working pedals, a motor under 750 W and under 20 mph on motor power alone; it then takes the same brake, frame and reflector rules.
Lead times and delivery
Time depends mostly on the electric system: motors, batteries and controllers are booked from abroad, and a change of cell or motor usually means new reports. New frames, custom colours and failed tests add time. Roptan confirms the sample and bulk dates, and any minimum order, in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh we deliver e-bikes boxed or assembled to dealers, fleets and company buyers, with battery serial numbers listed against frame numbers. Ask for a charger that suits local sockets. You receive the owner's manual with charging instructions, the inspection report and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying e-bikes for export
E-bikes sit under HS 8711.60, cycles with an electric motor, which has a sub-line for pedal-assist bikes up to 250 W. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram. The EU keeps duties on e-bikes from China and does not name Bangladesh, but ask where the frame, motor and battery are made and confirm duty with a customs adviser. Origin rules for any duty preference are confirmed for your destination before you order.
Questions buyers ask
Can a 350 W motor be sold as a pedelec in the EU?
Not under the pedelec exemption. It covers motors up to 250 W maximum continuous rated power with assistance cut off before 25 km/h. Above that, the bike is outside the exemption and usually needs approval as a moped, so choose the motor for the market.
Hub motor or mid-drive?
Hub motors are the most common layout and leave the drivetrain as it is. A mid-drive sits at the cranks and drives through the chain and rear gears. Decide this first, since it sets price, handling and servicing, and the frame drawing follows from it.
Is a 52 V battery covered by EN 15194?
No. EN 15194 is written for systems up to and including 48 V d.c., or with an integrated charger on a nominal 230 V a.c. input. A higher-voltage system falls outside its scope, so ask the lab which rules would apply.
What changes for the US market?
Under 750 W and 20 mph on motor power alone, the e-bike counts as a bicycle under 16 CFR 1512. In June 2026 the CPSC proposed a mandatory standard for micromobility lithium-ion batteries based on UL 2849; it was still a proposal in October 2026, so ask the lab for the current position. Speed classes are usually set by state law, not by the CPSC.
How soon will I hear back about bicycles?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
