Buying city and trekking bikes in Bangladesh
City bikes are built for daily riding in town; trekking bikes are hybrids fitted for touring, usually with mudguards, a pannier rack and lights. Both normally run on 700C or 28 inch wheels, which share a 622 mm bead seat diameter. Europe is the main export market: a 2023 press report put four in five of Bangladesh's exported bicycles in EU countries.
These bikes carry more fitted parts than most: rack, mudguards, chain guard, lights and reflectors, each with its own rules. Roptan turns them into one parts list for a verified city and trekking bike manufacturer in Bangladesh, checks each fitted part against your market and inspects the lot before shipping.
How to specify a city or trekking bike
- Gears
- State hub or derailleur and the number of speeds. Seven-speed hubs are common on European city bikes.
- Brakes
- State the brake type, front and rear, and that the bikes will be ridden in rain; it narrows the sensible choices.
- Tyres
- Write the ISO 5775 designation with width and bead seat in millimetres, and any puncture or reflective sidewall needs.
- Rack and load
- Give the rack load rating and the bike's total load limit as two separate numbers, with frame mounting points on the drawing.
- Frame size
- Say how size is measured: seat tube, reach and stack, or rider height range. Send a size chart with the order.
- Rust protection
- July humidity in Bangladesh usually reaches 94 to 100 percent. Ask for a chain case, coated or plated bright steel parts, and ISO 9227 salt spray results with the hours and pass criterion you set.
Standards for city and trekking bikes
- ISO 4210-2:2023
- Covers city and trekking bikes with a maximum saddle height of 635 mm or more, folding bikes included. Delivery bikes, tandems and recumbents are outside it.
- ISO 11243:2023
- Requirements and tests for luggage carriers. It replaced the 2016 edition and excludes bags and baskets that are not permanently attached.
- ISO 6742 parts 1 to 3
- How cycle lights and reflectors perform and are installed, 2023 editions. Which lights a bike must carry is set by each market's road rules, so name the market.
- US 16 CFR 1512
- Asks for a chain guard on single-speed bikes, inflation pressure on the tyre sidewall, reflectors, a locking device on each wheel and an instruction manual.
Lead times and delivery
Dates depend as much on the fitted parts as on the frame. Hub gears, drum brakes, lights and racks may come from abroad and are booked ahead; a new rack or light may need its own test; custom colours add paint time. Roptan confirms sample and bulk dates, and any minimum order, in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh we deliver boxed or assembled bikes to dealers, offices and institutions, counted by model, size and colour. Assembled bikes come with racks, lights and mudguards fitted, plus the owner's manual, the inspection report and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying city and trekking bikes for export
City and trekking bikes are exported under HS 8712, the line for all non-motorised bicycles, and Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram. Bangladesh is not on the EU's anti-dumping list for bicycles, but the duty follows origin, so ask where frames, forks and main parts are made and confirm duty with a customs adviser. Origin rules for any duty preference are confirmed for your destination before you order.
Questions buyers ask
Hub gears or a derailleur for a city bike?
Hub gears suit town riding in the wet: they are sealed against water and grit and shift while the bike is stopped. The trade-off is harder shifting under load and usually about 10 percent less efficiency than a clean derailleur. State the number of speeds you need.
Which brake suits a rainy market?
Drum and coaster brakes are enclosed, so they stay consistent in wet or dirty conditions. Disc brakes also work in rain. Rim brakes lose power when rims are wet and wear the rim, which then needs checking. State the brake and the riding conditions on the brief.
Is a cargo or delivery bike covered by ISO 4210-2?
No. ISO 4210-2:2023 excludes delivery bicycles, as well as tandems and recumbents. A cargo bike needs its own test scope agreed with the lab, so say on the brief if the range includes one.
What tyre size should I order?
Use the ISO 5775 designation: tyre width and bead seat diameter in millimetres, such as 622 for 700C. Old English and French size names can be read more than one way, which is how a wrong tyre gets fitted.
How soon will I hear back about bicycles?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
