Buying jute geotextile in Bangladesh

Jute geotextile is fabric woven from jute for jobs where a natural layer needs to work for a limited time: holding soil on a slope until roots take over, separating sand from a soft subgrade or covering a bank. BJRI, the government's jute research institute, reports making it from jute alone and blended with coir.

Jute is weaker than synthetic fabric, and weaker again when wet, so the order has to match the job. As a jute geotextile supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan finds a verified mill for the weave and weight you need, has wet and dry strength tested, checks any treatment and delivers the rolls to your site.

Kinds of jute geotextile

Open-weave soil saver

A loose mesh for slopes and landslide-prone ground, so seed and grass grow through it. One Indian guide sets the weight, 500 g/m² or above, by rainfall intensity and slope angle.

Hessian

The lightest and most porous of four mill fabrics tested in a 2005 Dhaka study, at about 170 to 475 g/m². Choose it where water must pass more than strength is needed.

DW twill and canvas

Closer, heavier weaves: in the same study twill ran about 370 to 815 g/m² and canvas, the densest, about 475 to 680 g/m². Choose them where the design calls for a tighter fabric.

Bitumen-treated jute

Brushed with a carbon and bitumen emulsion and sun-dried to slow decay. Strength usually improves, but in that study bitumen closed the openings of two fabrics: use it as a cover, not a filter.

Jute and coir blends

BJRI reports geotextile made from jute blended with coir, the fibre of coconut husk. Order it where your design names a coir blend, and test it like any other fabric.

How to brief a jute geotextile supplier in Bangladesh

Job and working life
Say what the fabric must do and for how long: hold a slope until roots take over, separate a subgrade or cover a bank.
Weight, weave and width
State mass in g/m², the weave and the width. Mill fabrics in the 2005 study were listed in ounces per square yard and inches, so ask for metric figures.
Strength, wet and dry
Ask for wide-width tensile in kN/m, dry and wet. A Bangladeshi study found grab and strip strength both fall as moisture content rises, which matters in monsoon ground.
Treatment
Untreated, bitumen-treated or coir-blended. A coating can close the openings, so do not use a coated fabric where water must pass through.
Laying details
Overlap and pegging come from the drawing. In rural road trials reported in 2014, the fabric sat on 75 mm of compacted sand, overlapped and pegged, under more sand.

Tests and standards for jute geotextile

IS 14715 (Part 1 and Part 2):2016
Indian specifications for jute geotextile in road subgrades (Part 1) and river bank erosion control (Part 2), from the Bureau of Indian Standards. Use them where your contract writes to them.
ASTM D4595 or ISO 10319:2024; ASTM D4632
Wide-width and grab tensile. State dry or wet conditioning, since jute loses strength as it takes up water.
ASTM D5261 and ASTM D5199
Mass per unit area and thickness, the first checks that a delivery matches the approved sample.
ASTM D4751, ASTM D4491 and ISO 12236:2026
Opening size and permittivity for separation duty, and CBR puncture where the layer sits under fill.

What moves the price of jute geotextile

  • Fabric weight per square metre: heavier fabric uses more jute yarn.
  • Weave: open-weave mesh, hessian, twill or canvas.
  • Treatment: a carbon and bitumen coating, or a coir blend.
  • Width: a wider fabric means fewer overlaps, if the mill's looms can make it.
  • Testing: wet and dry strength reports add lab fees.

Lead times and delivery

Hessian and twill from a mill's regular range move faster than a special width, a heavy weight or a coir blend. Bitumen treatment is brushed on and dried in the sun, so wet weather slows it, and wet and dry lab tests add time. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.

We deliver the rolls to your site or store anywhere in Bangladesh with a packing list, the test reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Keep untreated jute dry and off the ground until laying, since it loses strength once wet. Laying, pegging and seeding stay with the contractor.

Buying jute geotextile for export

Importers can buy jute geotextile through Roptan on FOB Chattogram terms, with test reports to the methods their contract names. Where a contract writes to India's IS 14715, send the part number and property table with the enquiry.

What we check for this order

  • Weight against the sampleWe check mass per square metre and width on each delivery against the approved sample, since mill fabrics vary.
  • Wet and dry strengthWe ask for tensile results on wet conditioned samples as well as dry ones.
  • Treatment as orderedWe confirm the fabric is untreated, bitumen-treated or coir-blended as ordered, since a coating changes how water passes.
  • Mill fits the orderWe confirm the mill weaves your width, weight and weave before we quote, not after the order is placed.

Questions buyers ask

How long does jute geotextile last?

Long enough for its job, if chosen well. It is meant to degrade: on slopes, grass roots take over as the jute breaks down. Bitumen treatment is meant to slow decay, but published life figures for treated jute are old estimates, so plan around the planting or consolidation time.

Can jute geotextile replace a synthetic filter?

Not like for like. A 2005 university study in Dhaka found synthetic geotextile better on index, mechanical and hydraulic properties. Use jute where a temporary layer does the job, such as slope planting or a rural road subgrade, and keep synthetic fabric for permanent river filters.

Does jute geotextile work under rural roads?

Field trials on 5 km of rural roads in Bangladesh used it where the subgrade could not reach a CBR of 3% without special means. The authors report load-carrying capacity rising 1.5 to 7 times over time, which they link to membrane action, moisture uptake and consolidation.

Why plant grass with jute on a slope?

Because the two work in turn. A Bangladeshi study paired jute with vetiver grass on road embankments: the jute protects the soil while roots grow, and as it degrades the roots take over its job. Seed or plant as soon as the fabric is down.

How soon will I hear back about geo bags?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
