Buying gill nets in Bangladesh

A gill net is a wall of netting hung in the water. Fish swim into it and are held by the gills, wedged or tangled, while smaller fish pass through, so the mesh sets the size of fish caught. That is why fisheries regulate gill-net mesh and twine; in Bangladesh the rules cover yarn, mesh, water and season.

Kinds of gill net

Surface gill nets

Carried by the float line so the net fishes at the top of the water. Choose it for fish that swim near the surface, and state the float type and spacing.

Midwater gill nets

Held between surface and bottom by balancing floats against sinkers. Choose it for fish that move in midwater, and give the depth you fish.

Bottom gill nets

Weighted to fish just above the bottom. Choose it for fish that feed low, and give the water depth so the depth of netting suits it.

Sheet gill netting

Netting supplied without ropes for crews who mount their own. Choose it if you rig locally, and give the hanging ratio you use so length and depth are cut to suit.

How to brief a gill net manufacturer in Bangladesh

Yarn: Nylon multifilament, as R tex or denier and ply. Write multifilament on the order and every label: a net of single-yarn monofilament is current jal.
Mesh: Stretched mesh in millimetres, measured by ISO 16663-1, sized to the target fish and clearly above the minimum for your water.
Hanging ratio: Rope length over stretched netting length, usually around 0.50 for a gill net. It sets how open the meshes hang and how long the finished net is.
Size per piece: Depth in meshes and length per piece, stretched or hung, so quotes compare like for like.
Rigging: Float line and sinker line material and diameter, float type and spacing, and sinker weight. FAO finds synthetic rope stronger than natural fibre.

Law, mesh rules and tests for gill nets

Protection and Conservation of Fish Act 1950: Section 4A bans current jal, a net of monofilament nylon fibre: making, importing, selling, storing, carrying, owning and using it. The 2026 amendment rewrote the penalties, dropping the minimum prison terms and raising the fines.
1988 gill-net mesh notification: Made under rule 12 of the Protection and Conservation of Fish Rules 1985, it bans gill nets of about 4.5 cm mesh or less. Confirm the current rule for your water.
Marine Fisheries Act 2020: At sea, section 28 makes it an offence to use or keep on a fishing vessel any net other than one of the prescribed size.

What moves the price of a gill net

Twine: nets are usually sold by weight, so R tex, ply and depth set much of the cost.
Mesh: in the same twine, a smaller mesh puts more netting weight into each metre of net.
Rigging: float line, sinker line, floats and sinkers mounted by the maker.
Finish: any dye, heat setting or UV additive in the twine.
Third-party tests of breaking force and mesh on your lot, if you ask for them.

Lead times and delivery

A twine and mesh the maker already runs is quicker than a new specification, which usually needs a sample piece approved first. Rigging, dyeing and lab tests each add time, and some fishing is closed for part of the year, so order ahead of your season. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.

What mesh size should a gill net be?

Size it to the fish, then to the law. FAO suggests a stretched mesh about a quarter smaller than the girth of the fish you want, and the 1988 notification bans gill nets of about 4.5 cm mesh or less. Confirm the current rule for your water; Roptan sources only nets lawful for their use.

Is a multifilament gill net allowed everywhere in Bangladesh?

Not automatically. Multifilament yarn keeps the net outside the current jal ban, but mesh, water, season and, at sea, the prescribed net size still apply. Tell us where and how it will fish, and check today's rule with your fisheries office.

What hanging ratio should I ask for?

Around 0.50 is usual for a gill net: the rope is half the stretched length of the netting it carries. A higher ratio opens the meshes wider, towards a square near 0.70. Give the ratio you rig at and the hung length you need.

What test report should come with the nets?

Twine and knot breaking force to ISO 1805, mesh breaking force to ISO 1806 and mesh opening by ISO 16663-1, all on wet pieces from your lot. It should name the yarn as multifilament, matching the label.

How soon will I hear back about fishing nets?
