Buying knotless nets in Bangladesh

Knotless netting has no knots: at each mesh corner the neighbouring bars are joined by interlacing their threads. It comes in two kinds, intertwined and raschel, the raschel kind knitted by machine since about 1950. The mesh is smoother than knotted netting, so buyers choose it for pond seines, nursery nets, barrier nets and nets used to handle live fish.

Unlike knotted twine, which has the tex system, knotless netting has no standard designation, and makers often code it their own way, so quotes are hard to compare. Kinds of knotless net

Raschel knotless netting

Bars knitted from looped threads, with laid-in threads added for strength, entwined at each mesh corner in place of a knot. Choose it for most pond, hatchery and barrier uses, and ask how the corner is built.

Fine-mesh nursery netting

Knotless netting began in small mesh, where braiding by hand is slow. FAO suggests very fine netting for seines that harvest small fish from nursery ponds; choose it for that, after checking the rule for your water.

Square and hexagonal mesh

Besides diamond, knotless netting comes in square and hexagonal mesh. A hexagonal stretched mesh is four times the bar, not twice, so choose the shape first and size it to match.

UV-treated barrier netting

Bird and sports barrier nets stay in the sun. Undyed nylon resists sunlight poorly and polyester well, so choose polyester or dyed, UV-treated twine and write the treatment into the order.

What a knotless net manufacturer in Bangladesh needs from you

Both thread deniers: The denier of the looped threads and of the laid-in threads. Strength moves with both, and 210 denier nylon multifilament is the usual yarn.
Multifilament yarn: Write multifilament on the order and the label. A monofilament nylon fishing net, with or without knots, reads as current jal under Bangladesh law.

Tests for knotless netting

ISO 1806 mesh breaking force: The test that decides a knotless net, since knotless and knotted nets are compared on wet mesh strength. Ask for wet results from your lot.
ISO 16663-1 mesh opening: Fixes how the mesh is measured, so you and the maker agree on its size. State wet or dry in the order.
ISO 1805 for the yarn: Breaking force of the netting yarn, useful when two makers quote different deniers for the looped and laid-in threads.
Protection and Conservation of Fish Act 1950: Section 4A outlaws current jal, any fishing net of monofilament nylon fibre, from making to using, with no exception for knotless construction.

What moves the price of knotless netting

Thread deniers: weight follows both thread sets, and finer looped threads add less.
Unit: fishing netting is usually sold by the kilogram, sports and safety netting by the square metre.
Mesh and depth: a smaller mesh or a deeper net takes more yarn per metre.
Polymer and finish: nylon or polyester, and any dye or UV additive in the yarn.

Is a knotless net stronger than a knotted one?

It depends on the yarns, not on the missing knots. The two are compared on wet mesh breaking force to ISO 1806, and a raschel net's strength moves with both thread deniers. Ask for results on wet pieces of the netting you are buying.

Can I use knotless netting for a nursery pond seine?

FAO suggests very fine netting for seines that harvest small fish from nursery ponds, and knotless netting is smoother than knotted. Fine mesh is also where Bangladesh's mesh rules apply, so confirm the rule for your water with your Upazila Fisheries Officer. Roptan sources only nets lawful for their use.

Is there a standard for raschel netting?
