Buying cast nets in Bangladesh
A cast net is a circle of small-mesh netting weighted around its edge. Thrown by hand, it spreads in the air, sinks quickly and closes on the fish as it is hauled back. In Bangladesh it is the jhaki jal, an old gear usually thrown from the banks of canals, ponds and rivers, mainly for puti, prawn and carp.
Sellers abroad list many cast nets in monofilament, but Bangladesh's fish law bans any fishing net of monofilament nylon, from making to using, and gives no export exception. So Roptan sources multifilament cast nets only, from a verified cast net manufacturer in Bangladesh, and puts every quote on one basis of size, mesh, twine and sinkers.
What a cast net manufacturer in Bangladesh needs to quote
- Size
- Say whether your figure is the radius, the diameter or the drop length, since sellers quote different ones. Send a sample net if you have one.
- Mesh
- Stretched or bar size, where stretched is twice the bar, and wet or dry. Fix it with the fish and your water's rule in mind.
- Twine and meshes deep
- Multifilament nylon as R tex or denier and ply, and meshes deep, which with the mesh sets how far the net spreads.
- Sinkers
- Metal, total weight and spacing along the edge, and whether you want lead or iron.
- Closing gear
- Central ring, strings and pulling rope, or hand line and retrieval clamp, with rope length and material.
- Sun treatment
- Undyed nylon resists sunlight poorly. For nets left to dry on a bank, ask for dyed or UV-treated twine and store them in shade.
Tests, law and paperwork for cast nets
- ISO 1806 and ISO 16663-1
- Mesh breaking force and measured mesh opening, on pieces from your lot. We know of no ISO standard written for cast nets as such.
- ISO 1805 and ISO 858
- Breaking force and knot breaking force of the twine, and the tex designation that puts twines from different makers on one basis.
- Protection and Conservation of Fish Act 1950
- Its current jal ban covers any fishing net of monofilament nylon, and a cast net is a fishing net under the Act's definition, so on its plain words a monofilament cast net is banned too.
Lead times and delivery
A size, mesh and twine already in the maker's range is quicker to supply than a new net, which usually needs a sample approved first; a different sinker metal and lab tests each add time. Nets are usually sold by weight, so the minimum is set per specification. Roptan confirms the dates and minimum in its quote.
Roptan delivers to your shop, depot or farm anywhere in Bangladesh, each net bagged or bundled and labelled with size, mesh, twine and sinker weight, with the packing list and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Store nylon nets dry and out of the sun.
Buying cast nets for export
For buyers abroad we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong). A cast net is a made-up fishing net under subheading 5608 11, not a landing net under heading 9507. Some US states, for example, cap cast-net mesh or require a licence, so check your market's rule and name the sinker metal on the order.
Questions buyers ask
What size of cast net should I order?
Order by what your crews throw well. Measure that net by radius or drop length, note its mesh, meshes deep and sinker weight, and say which measure you used, since sellers quote size differently. FAO notes that casting takes skill, so match the net to the thrower.
Lead or iron sinkers?
Both are offered: FAO lists lead and baked earth as the usual sinker materials, and sellers also offer galvanised or plated iron sinkers sold as lead-free. Choose by weight per metre of edge and by what your buyers accept, and have the metal stated on the quote.
Can you supply monofilament cast nets?
No. The fish law bans fishing nets of monofilament nylon from making to using, and a cast net is a fishing net under the Act's own definition, so on its plain words a monofilament cast net is current jal. Making one here for export is inside the same ban, since the section gives no export exception. Roptan sources multifilament cast nets only.
Where on a fish farm does a cast net work?
Where fish gather: FAO names a feeding place in a pond or the area near a water inlet. It can be thrown from the bank, standing in the water or from a boat, and it closes on the fish as soon as the rope is pulled.
How soon will I hear back about fishing nets?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
