Buying knotted fishing nets in Bangladesh

Knotted netting is made mesh by mesh from netting twine, each mesh tied with a sheet bend or a similar knot, today often by machine. On fish farms and in open water it becomes seines, lift nets and gill nets, and importers buy it as made-up fishing nets. Knotless netting is smoother, so know why you want knots.

A knotted fishing net manufacturer in Bangladesh usually quotes by weight, so two quotes for the same mesh can hide different twine. Roptan puts every quote on one twine designation, mesh convention and net size, sources from a verified maker, asks how the knots were set, and checks your lot.

Kinds of knotted fishing net

Single knot netting

The usual sheet bend or single English knot. In a 2026 laboratory test it stretched slightly more before breaking than a double knot. Choose it for general seines and lift nets.

Double knot netting

A second turn in every knot, which broke at higher force in the same test. Choose it for nets hauled hard, after a knot test on your own twine.

Nylon, polyethylene or polyester netting

In FAO's table, undyed nylon rates poor for sun resistance, polyethylene medium and polyester good. Choose by gear and exposure, with dyed or UV-treated twine for nets that dry on banks.

Pond seines

A rectangular panel, or a bag with two wings, pulled through a pond to harvest fish. Choose it for farm harvests, sized to the pond as the FAQ below explains.

Rigged nets

Netting mounted on head and foot ropes with floats and sinkers, ready to fish; each rope is usually the net length plus 2 to 3 m. Choose it when your crew does not rig its own.

Briefing a knotted fishing net manufacturer in Bangladesh

Twine
R tex, the grams per 1,000 m of twine, or denier and ply. Twelve 23 tex yarns are written 23/12, R 280 tex, or 210/12 in deniers.
Mesh convention
Bar or stretched, wet or dry. Stretched diamond mesh is twice the bar, so a 25 mm bar is a 50 mm stretched mesh. Name ISO 16663-1 as the method.
Size and hanging
Length stretched or as a count of meshes, and depth in meshes. For rigged nets add the hanging ratio, rope length over stretched netting length.
Knot and setting
Single or double knot, and whether the netting is heat set under tension, the usual way to stop knots slipping so the mesh stays even.
Treatment
Any dye or UV additive. For a tanned or tarred net, name the dressing: Bangladesh's fish law lists gab fruit, goran bark and coal-tar.

Tests and rules for knotted netting

ISO 1805, ISO 1806 and ISO 3790
Twine and knot breaking force, mesh breaking force of the netting, and yarn elongation. Ask for wet results where the net works in water.
ISO fibre rope standards
Head and foot ropes by polymer: ISO 1140 polyamide, ISO 1141 polyester, ISO 1346 polypropylene, ISO 1969 polyethylene; test methods in ISO 2307.
Protection and Conservation of Fish Act 1950
Bans current jal, fishing net of monofilament nylon. Knotted nets of multifilament twine fall outside that definition, and Roptan sources only those.

What moves the price of knotted netting

  • Weight: netting is usually sold by the kilogram, and weight follows twine size, ply, mesh and depth.
  • Mesh: in the same twine, a smaller mesh puts more twine and knots into each metre.
  • Finish: dye, heat setting and UV additive each add a process or a material.
  • Rigging: head and foot ropes, floats and sinkers mounted by the maker add materials and work.
  • Lab tests on your lot, where you ask for them.

Lead times and delivery

Time depends on whether the maker already runs your twine and mesh. A new specification usually needs a sample piece approved first, and heat setting, dyeing, rigging and lab tests each add a step. Netting is usually sold by weight, so the minimum is set in kilograms per specification. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.

Roptan delivers bales to your farm, hatchery, store or boat yard in Chattogram, Khulna, Dhaka or elsewhere in Bangladesh, one specification per bale, labelled with twine, mesh, depth and length. The packing list, test report and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3) come with the goods.

Buying knotted fishing nets for export

For importers we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong). Made-up fishing nets of man-made fibre fall under tariff subheading 5608 11, and most of Bangladesh's recorded exports of them go to India. Documents usually include the invoice, a packing list by specification, the certificate of origin and test reports.

What we check for this order

  • Twine weight by lengthWe weigh a measured length of unravelled twine from your lot and convert it to R tex, so lighter twine cannot pass.
  • Even meshWe measure meshes across the net by the ISO 16663-1 method; uneven mesh can mean knots slipped in finishing.
  • Wet breaking forceWe ask for twine, knot and mesh breaking force on wet pieces cut from your lot.
  • Multifilament twineWe confirm the twine is multifilament and the label says so, since monofilament nylon nets are current jal.

Questions buyers ask

What does 23/12 or R 280 tex mean on a twine label?

Twelve yarns of 23 tex twisted into a twine of 280 tex, that is 280 grams per 1,000 metres. In deniers it is written 210/12. R tex puts twines from different makers on one basis, so ask for it with denier and ply.

Is a double knot stronger than a single knot?

Usually, by a modest margin. In a 2026 laboratory study on one 210D/21 nylon twine, double English knots broke about 10 percent higher than single ones and neither kind slipped. It is one twine in one lab, so ask for knot breaking force on yours.

Is there a minimum mesh size for nets in Bangladesh?

For gill nets, a 1988 notification under the fish rules bans gill nets, and nets of similar mesh, of about 4.5 cm or less. At sea, the Marine Fisheries Act 2020 allows only nets of the prescribed size. Confirm the current rule for your water; Roptan sources only lawful gear.

How big should a pond seine be?

FAO's guide: about 1.5 times the width of the water and 1.5 to 2 times its deepest depth, and no large seine unless you can pull it mechanically. Send the pond's width and depth with your request.

How soon will I hear back about fishing nets?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
