Buying fishing tackle in Bangladesh

Fishing tackle is the gear an angler or a net crew uses beside the net itself: hooks, lines, floats, sinkers, swivels, ropes and landing nets. In Bangladesh the hook, the borshi, is usually tied to a bamboo or iron rod and fished in fresh and salt water. Fish farms that rig their own nets also need floats, sinkers and rope.

Some makers sell hooks by model number alone, which says little about size or wire. Roptan writes size, wire, finish, weight and floatability into one specification for each fishing tackle manufacturer in Bangladesh that quotes, sources from verified sellers, checks samples from the lot against it and delivers.

Kinds of fishing tackle

Hooks

Bait, fly and lure hooks, single, double or treble, barbed or barbless, in sizes from 32, the smallest, to 20/0, the largest. Choose by fish and bait, and send a sketch with the size.

Fishing line

Mostly nylon monofilament today, with polyethylene braid and fluorocarbon as alternatives. Choose by breaking strength, stretch, abrasion resistance and visibility; a leader of lower breaking strength can act as a sacrificial link.

Floats

Foam, cork, plastic or painted wood, for angling or for net headlines. Choose by floatability, the weight a float holds up without sinking, and for net floats by a hole slightly wider than the rope.

Sinkers

Lead, iron or baked earth, from split shot and barrel weights for lines to olives and sheet strips for nets. Choose by weight, shape and metal, and state all three.

Rope and terminal tackle

Twisted or braided polyamide, polyethylene or polypropylene rope for headlines and footlines, plus swivels, snaps and split rings for line rigs. Choose synthetic rope over hemp or sisal for strength.

Landing nets and keepnets

Short-handled hand nets that lift a hooked fish from the water, and tube-shaped nets that keep a catch alive. Choose by frame, handle length and mesh.

How to brief a fishing tackle manufacturer in Bangladesh

Hook size and shank
Size on the 32 to 20/0 scale, and shank length as standard, short, extra-long or 2XL. Some sellers use only model numbers, so send a sketch.
Hook wire, point and finish
Wire as fine, extra heavy or 2X heavy; point ground or chemically sharpened; barb or barbless. Hooks here fish fresh and salt water and wait in humid stores, so state the finish.
Line
Material, diameter in millimetres, length per spool and breaking strength. Diameter check: wind the line tightly round a pencil, measure ten turns and divide by ten.
Floats
Material, shape, floatability in grams and, for net floats, hole size against the rope diameter.
Sinkers
Material, shape and weight per piece with a tolerance. For rigged nets, give total sinker weight against total float floatability.
Packing
Pieces per pack, packs per carton and label text, with hook size and wire printed on each pack.

Standards and tests for fishing tackle

Your specification and sample
Hooks, floats and sinkers are bought to the buyer's written specification and an approved sample rather than an ISO product standard, so write tolerances on size, weight and floatability.
ISO 1140, ISO 1141, ISO 1346 and ISO 1969
Fibre rope by polymer: polyamide, polyester, polypropylene and polyethylene. Name the one that matches the rope you order.
ISO 2307 and ISO 9554
ISO 2307 sets how certain physical and mechanical properties of fibre rope are measured; ISO 9554 gives general specifications for fibre ropes.

What moves the price of fishing tackle

  • Unit: sinkers and line are usually sold by weight and reels by the piece, and the unit sets the minimum.
  • Hooks: size, wire gauge, finish and how the point is sharpened.
  • Line: material, diameter and length per spool.
  • Sinkers: metal, shape and weight per piece.
  • Packing: printed retail packs against plain bulk cartons.

Lead times and delivery

No single time applies to tackle. Stock sizes in standard packs move faster than a new hook shape, float or sinker weight, which usually needs a sample approved first. A mixed order is ready only when its slowest item is, so split urgent items out. The minimum, set by weight or by piece, and the dates are confirmed in Roptan's quote.

Roptan delivers cartons to your shop, store or farm in any district, with packs labelled by item, size and quantity, a packing list and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Ask for hooks packed against damp, since corrosion resistance is part of what you specified.

What we check for this order

  • Hook against sketchWe check the size and wire marked on the pack, and the point, barb and eye shape, against your sketch or approved sample.
  • Line diameter and strengthWe measure line diameter on a sample by FAO's pencil method and ask for a breaking-strength test against the marked figure.
  • Float liftWe test floats from the lot for floatability against the order, so the headline or rig rides as designed.
  • Sinker weight and metalWe weigh sinkers from the lot against the stated weight per piece and check the metal against the order.

Questions buyers ask

How are fish hook sizes numbered?

On a scale that runs from 32, the smallest, to 20/0, the largest. Shank length and wire are described separately, as standard, extra-long or 2XL and fine wire or 2X heavy. Some makers give only model numbers, so send a sketch or a sample hook with your order.

How do I check a float's lift?

Ask for its floatability in grams: the weight it holds up without sinking. FAO puts it at roughly 80 to 90 percent of the float's volume in millilitres, so a 100 ml float holds up about 80 to 90 g. For nets, total sinker weight is usually 1 to 1.5 times total floatability.

Is nylon monofilament fishing line covered by the current jal ban?

The ban is written for a net: current jal is defined as fishing net made of monofilament nylon, so on a plain reading an angling line is outside it. Monofilament twine sold to be made into nets is another matter, and Roptan does not source it.

Which rope suits net headlines?

Synthetic rope, which FAO finds stronger and more resistant than hemp, manila or sisal: polyamide, polyethylene or polypropylene, twisted or braided. Order it to the ISO fibre-rope standard for its polymer, and give the diameter and length per coil.

How soon will I hear back about fishing nets?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
