Buying fitness equipment in Bangladesh

Fitness equipment here means free weights and the frames and accessories around them: dumbbells, kettlebells, plates, bars, benches, racks, mats and bands. Gyms, hotels, offices and home users in Bangladesh buy them for fit-outs and resale; importers buy by the container. Most of these goods sell by weight, so the accuracy of each piece is the core of the order.

Asking a fitness equipment manufacturer in Bangladesh for a price by the kilo hides what matters: coating, fill, weight tolerance and frame steel. Roptan writes those into the order, sources from verified makers, weighs bulk pieces and asks for a test report for each bench or machine model.

Kinds of fitness equipment

Dumbbells

Fixed dumbbells are usually single cast iron or moulded pieces, sometimes rubber or neoprene coated; low-cost ones are a plastic shell filled with concrete. Adjustable dumbbells take plates on a bar with collars and suit home gyms.

Kettlebells

A cast iron or cast steel ball with a handle on top. Competition-style bells are usually colour coded by weight, such as 16 kg yellow and 24 kg green; state the code if you want it.

Weight plates

Rubber-coated bumper plates are made to be dropped from overhead in Olympic lifting. Cast iron plates suit general strength training and powerlifting and are usually considerably cheaper.

Barbells

A men's Olympic bar is usually 2.2 metres long and weighs 20 kg; the women's bar is 2.01 metres and 15 kg. Powerlifting bars are usually stiffer, with grip marks 810 mm apart.

Benches and racks

Flat, adjustable, folding, abdominal and preacher-curl benches, and power racks: four uprights with adjustable bar catches that act as a mechanical spotter.

Mats and resistance bands

Mats in PVC, thermoplastic elastomer, natural rubber, cork or cotton, from soft to firm. Bands come as loops, tubes with handles or clip-on types, usually colour coded by resistance.

How to specify fitness equipment

Weight and tolerance
Nominal weight per piece and the tolerance you accept, weighed on a calibrated scale. Ask for the tolerance in the quote, since makers set their own.
Coating and fill
Bare or painted cast iron, rubber, neoprene or urethane coating, or a filled plastic shell. The coating is the visible difference between grades.
Plate and bar sizes
Olympic plates of 10 kg and over are usually 450 mm across. State diameter, hub hole and colour code; for bars, grip and sleeve diameters, knurl, and bushings or bearings.
Load ratings
For benches and racks, the maximum user load, the load on the bar catches, frame steel gauge, pad foam density and cover.
Bands and mats
Band resistance in kilograms at a stated stretch, not by colour alone, since colour codes vary between makers. Mat thickness, density, material and surface texture.

Standards and tests for fitness equipment

ISO 20957-1:2024
General safety requirements and test methods for stationary training equipment. It covers machines and benches; plain free weights are bought on weight and finish.
ISO 20957-2 and ISO 20957-4
Part 2 adds requirements for weight-stack and plate-loaded machines, part 4 for strength training benches. Ask for a report per model against the current edition of the matching part.
REACH Annex XVII entry 50
EU limit of 1 mg/kg for each listed PAH in rubber or plastic parts in long or repeated skin contact. Test coated handles, mats, bands and bench covers per material.

What moves the price of fitness equipment

  • Coating: rubber or urethane over cast iron usually costs more than bare or painted iron.
  • Bar build: the steel grade, knurl, and bearings or bushings in the sleeves.
  • Frame: steel gauge and weld quality on racks and benches, and the pad foam and cover.
  • Tolerance: a tighter weight band per piece means more pieces machined, sorted or rejected.
  • Freight: iron goods fill a container by weight first, so the kilo rate matters.

Lead times and delivery

Time depends on the mix and how new it is. Stock castings in stock weights are quicker; new moulds, logos cast into plates or bells, extra coating colours and a new bench design take longer, and ISO 20957 testing of a new model adds time. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum per item in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver to gyms, hotels, offices and homes with the packing list, the weight sheet and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). For gym fit-outs we arrange assembly of benches and racks through the seller, with warranty terms written into the quote.

Buying fitness equipment for export

Export quotes are FOB Chattogram (Chittagong). A 20-foot container typically takes a net load of about 28 tonnes in about 33 cubic metres, so plates and dumbbells hit the weight limit first. Fitness goods usually fall under HS 9506.91; your broker confirms the line. Papers cover the invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, REX or UK DCTS origin papers and test reports.

What we check for this order

  • Weight on a calibrated scaleWe weigh pieces of each weight in the bulk against the nominal weight and your tolerance.
  • Coating and finishWe look for cracks, bubbles and loose rubber on coated pieces, and check colour codes and logos against the sample.
  • Report for this modelISO 20957 reports for benches and racks name the exact model and load, and PAH reports the exact coating.
  • Kilos per containerWe check the packing list weight against the order, so the container stays inside its payload.

Questions buyers ask

Do dumbbells and plates need ISO 20957?

Not as a rule. ISO 20957 is written for stationary training equipment, so it applies to benches, racks and machines. Free weights are bought on weight, tolerance, coating and finish, plus a PAH test on rubber parts for the EU.

Bumper plates or cast iron plates?

Bumper plates are coated in solid rubber so they can be dropped from overhead, which Olympic lifting needs. Cast iron plates are usually considerably cheaper and suit general strength training and powerlifting. Tell us how the plates will be used and we quote the right kind.

How should I state resistance band strength?

In kilograms or pounds at a stated stretch, with a tolerance. Bands are usually colour coded by resistance, but codes vary between makers, so colour alone does not fix the strength. Keep an approved sample set as the reference.

How do I compare quotes for heavy weights?

Put them on one basis: per piece or per kilo, coating, tolerance, packing, and kilos and units per container. A low kilo rate on bare iron is not comparable with a rubber-coated quote.

How soon will I hear back about sports goods?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
