Buying cricket gear in Bangladesh

Cricket gear is the bat and the protection a batter or wicket-keeper wears: pads, gloves and body guards. Bangladesh has its own bat trade: a UNB report of July 2026 quotes local estimates that Nesarabad in Pirojpur district makes about 75 per cent of the country's bats, mostly from local timber, for buyers from Dhaka and Chattogram to Khulna and Sylhet. Exports so far are few.

Before quoting, a cricket gear manufacturer in Bangladesh should say which wood a bat is made of, since willow and local timber look alike once finished. Roptan gets the wood and its source named in writing, sources from verified makers, measures bats against the Laws and checks pads and gloves against the approved sample.

Kinds of cricket gear

English willow bats

Cricket bat willow blades usually sold in grades 1 to 4 set by each maker, grade 1 for professional play, most bats grade 2. Choose them for match play, and ask for photos of the actual blades.

Kashmir willow bats

Usually sold for significantly lower prices than English willow, so they are usually bought for training and practice. State the willow and the grade in the order.

Local timber bats

Bats made in Bangladesh from local woods such as kadam, gaua and chatim, according to the UNB report. Ask the maker to name the wood in writing.

Batting and wicket-keeping pads

Leg pads that protect the shin bone from the ball. Keeping pads usually differ slightly from batting pads, so state which and the size range.

Batting and keeping gloves

Batting gloves are usually thickly padded over the fingers and thumb. Keeping gloves usually have webbing between thumb and index finger; only the wicket-keeper may wear gloves among fielders.

Body guards

Abdominal guards usually in high-density plastic with a padded edge, and thigh, arm, chest and elbow guards. Batters choose which to wear, so order them as separate items.

How to specify cricket gear

Bat size
Usually children's sizes 0 to 6, Harrow for youth, and adult sizes, with short handle the most common adult size. Give blade and handle length per size.
Law 5 limits
Match bats must not exceed 38 inches long, 4.25 inches wide, 2.64 inches deep or a 1.56 inch edge, in wood only.
Wood and grade
English willow, Kashmir willow or a named local timber, with the grade, grain count and whether the face may be bleached.
Weight and preparation
A weight range per bat, and whether bats ship raw, oiled with raw linseed oil, or knocked-in and ready to play.
Pads and gloves
Batting or keeping, left-handed or right-handed, size run from junior to adult, facing and padding materials, and the closures.
Branding and packing
Stickers, print or embroidery approved on the sample, and bat covers and carton counts per size.

Laws, standards and papers for cricket gear

Laws of Cricket, Law 5
The MCC limits on bat length, width, depth and edge, checked by umpires with a bat gauge. The blade must be made entirely of wood, so composite or bamboo blades are for informal play.
BS 6183 series
British standards for cricketers' protective equipment, from leg, thigh, arm and chest protectors to batting gloves, in editions dated 2000 and 2001. Ask which edition a report covers.
BS 7928:2013+A1:2019
The British Standard for cricket helmets, including neck protectors since the 2019 amendment. Helmets are covered on the protective gear page.

What moves the price of cricket gear

  • Wood: English willow bats usually sell for significantly more than Kashmir willow bats.
  • Grade: the number and straightness of grains, knots and whether the blade is bleached.
  • Preparation: oiling and knocking-in by the maker add work before the bat ships.
  • Pads and gloves: facing material, padding thickness and the size range.

Lead times and delivery

Time depends on the wood and the work. Bats from local timber in a maker's usual shapes are quicker; imported willow blanks, a new bat profile, knocking-in and custom stickers add time, and so do new pad or glove patterns. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum per item and size in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver to clubs, schools, academies and shops in Dhaka, Chattogram and elsewhere, with the packing list, the wood confirmation and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying cricket gear for export

Export quotes are FOB Chattogram (Chittagong), or air from Dhaka for samples. In the US tariff, leather batting gloves sit under 4203.21 and other cricket articles usually under 9506.99; your broker confirms your line. Papers usually cover the invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, REX or UK DCTS origin papers and a written statement of the bat wood.

What we check for this order

  • Wood in writingWe ask for the willow blank invoice or import paper, or the named local timber, since a finished face hides the wood.
  • Law 5 gaugeWe measure bats from the bulk for length, width, depth and edge, and weigh them against the stated range.
  • Face, splice and handleWe look for knots and cracks on the face, check the grain against the grade, and test splice and handle fit.
  • Pairs and sizesPads and gloves counted by size and hand, with padding and stitching checked against the sample.

Questions buyers ask

Is a Kashmir willow bat good enough for matches?

It is legal: Law 5 asks for wood within the size limits, not a type of willow. Kashmir willow usually sells for significantly lower prices, so it is usually bought for training, while grade 1 English willow is what professionals usually use. Grade and weight matter as much as the willow.

Do bats from Bangladesh use English willow?

Usually not. The UNB report says local makers use local timber, while international bats rely on imported English or Kashmir willow. A willow bat from a Bangladeshi maker needs imported blanks, so ask for the blank invoice. Roptan gets the wood named in writing before quoting.

Do new bats need knocking-in?

Usually yes. A new bat's soft fibres need knocking-in with an old ball or a mallet before they meet a hard new ball, and raw linseed oil fills the gaps between fibres. Say whether bats should ship raw, oiled or knocked-in, since an unprepared bat can crack early.

Which sizes should a school or academy order?

Usually a spread of children's sizes 0 to 6, Harrow and adult short handle, matched to the players' ages, with pads and gloves to match in both hands. Send the age groups and numbers and we propose a size run.

How soon will I hear back about sports goods?
