Buying wooden articles in Bangladesh

Wooden articles take in kitchenware and tableware such as chopping boards, bowls and spoons, decorative pieces such as inlaid boxes and ornaments, and small lines such as hangers, tool handles and frames. EPB reports them under HS headings 4414, 4417 and 4419 to 4421, and its figures include bamboo items, which Roptan covers on a separate page. This page is about solid wood.

A wooden article exporter in Bangladesh has to answer for three things a photograph cannot show: the species, the moisture content and the finish. Roptan matches your specification to verified sellers, checks moisture and finish on a sample of each batch, and asks for proof of a lawful wood source and the food-contact papers your market needs.

Kinds of wooden article

Kitchenware and tableware (HS 4419)

Chopping boards, bowls, spoons and trays that touch food. Choose them with a stated species, a food-safe finish or none, and the papers your market asks for.

Decorative wood (HS 4420)

Marquetry, inlaid wood, caskets for jewellery or cutlery, statuettes and ornaments. They are chosen for appearance, so finish and size consistency matter more than food safety.

Other articles of wood (HS 4421)

Clothes hangers and other household and utility items. Choose them on dimensions and finish, and send a sample or drawing.

Tool handles and frames (HS 4417 and 4414)

Tool bodies and handles, broom and brush bodies, shoe lasts and trees, and frames for pictures and mirrors. Small lines in the trade; state sizes on a drawing.

How to specify a wooden article

Species
Name it by botanical name. For boards that meet food, hardwoods with tight grain and small pores suit; take care with tropical hardwoods, as some contain toxins or allergens.
Moisture content
The moisture content at packing and the climate at destination. Wood should be dried to balance with the air where it will be used, and humid Bangladesh air differs from an air-conditioned home.
Drying
Ask how the wood was dried. Wood dried too fast becomes case hardened, a stress that can warp the piece when it is later released.
Finish
For food contact, a food-safe finish or none. Wooden boards are usually cared for with an edible mineral oil to avoid warping. Ask what the finish is made of.
Size and tolerance
Dimensions and tolerances on a drawing or an approved sample, agreed between you and the seller.
Food-contact labels
For the EU, the words 'for food contact', a specific use such as soup spoon, or the symbol in Annex II of the Regulation, plus the responsible business's name and address.

Food-contact, timber and packing rules

Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004
Article 3: food-contact materials must not transfer their constituents to food in quantities that endanger health. Article 17 requires traceability at all stages; Article 15 sets the labelling.
EU Deforestation Regulation
Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 lists headings 4414, 4417, 4419, 4420 and 4421. EU importers will want harvest plot locations and evidence that the wood is legal.
ISPM 15 for crates
Crates, boxes and pallets used to ship the articles need treatment and the mark; the articles themselves do not. Packaging of thin wood, 6 mm or less, is exempt.
Forest Act 1927
Removing timber or felling trees in a reserved forest is an offence unless done with a Forest Officer's written permission, so ask for proof of a lawful wood source.

What moves the price of a wooden article

  • Species and its supply: some hardwoods are harder to obtain than others.
  • Size and thickness, since a thicker piece uses more wood.
  • Hand finishing against machine finishing, and the finish itself.
  • Moisture conditioning before the pieces are made and packed.
  • Packing, food-contact testing and the legality papers your market asks for.

Lead times and delivery

No fixed lead time applies. Wood dried too fast can warp later, so pieces made from unseasoned stock usually take longer than pieces made from seasoned wood. Hand finishing, a new design and food-contact papers add time. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum quantity in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver to hotels, shops and offices, counted against the order and packed to protect the finish, with a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying wooden articles for export

We quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong), with the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin. Crates and pallets carry the ISPM 15 mark. For EU food-contact items we check the labelling and traceability records. For the Deforestation Regulation we ask the seller for harvest plot locations and proof of a lawful source, from the dates the Commission sets: now 30 December 2026 for large and medium operators, 30 June 2027 for most micro and small ones.

What we check for this order

  • Moisture readingA moisture meter reading on a sample of items before packing, against the content you ordered.
  • Cracks, splits and edgesA look at every sampled piece for cracks, splits and rough edges.
  • Species and finishThe species as stated, and the finish identified for any item that will touch food.
  • Packing and papersThe ISPM 15 mark on crates, and for EU food items the labelling and traceability records.

Questions buyers ask

Do wooden chopping boards need papers for the EU?

Yes. They fall under Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004: they must not transfer constituents to food in quantities that endanger health, and need food-contact labelling and traceability. Where no specific EU measure applies, member states may keep their own rules, so ask your importer whether a declaration of compliance or a test is needed.

Does the EU Deforestation Regulation cover wooden kitchenware?

Yes. Heading 4419, tableware and kitchenware of wood, is in Annex I, as are 4414, 4417, 4420 and 4421. EU importers will ask for the harvest plot locations and legality evidence. The Commission's dates have moved before, so check them again before you contract.

Why do wooden bowls warp or crack after arrival?

Usually moisture. Wood dried for humid air shrinks in a dry, air-conditioned home, and wood dried too fast carries case hardening stress that can show as warping later. State the moisture content at packing, ask how the wood was dried, and have a sample checked before shipping.

Which wood suits a chopping board?

Hardwoods with tight grain and small pores. Take care with tropical hardwoods, since some species contain toxins or allergens. Name the species by botanical name in the order, and ask the seller to confirm it on the packing list.

How soon will I hear back about charcoal and wood products?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
