Buying wadding and padding in Bangladesh

Wadding, also called batting or padding, is a web of loose fibre held together as a soft layer. It is the warm or cushioning fill in padded jackets, quilts, sleeping bags, pillows, cushions and upholstery. It is sold by weight per square metre and width, in rolls or sheets, and in Bangladesh mostly to local factories.

Two batts of the same weight can behave very differently in loft, in fibre migration and in how close the quilting must be. So Roptan asks each wadding and padding manufacturer in Bangladesh to state the bonding route with the weight, then checks a sample against your shell fabric before bulk.

Kinds of wadding and padding

Needle-punched wadding

Fibres tangled by barbed needles; the more punching, the denser the batt. Needled polyester or wool can let fibre work through the shell, so it needs close quilting and a fibre-proof test.

Scrim-backed wadding

A light stabiliser sheet needled into the web as it forms. It adds strength, supports the item in washing and lets stitch lines sit further apart. Choose it for quilts and washable goods.

Thermal-bonded wadding

Polyester mixed with a little low-melt fibre and passed through an oven so the fibres fuse. It has a higher loft and is very light. Choose it for light, lofty jackets and quilts.

Recycled polyester wadding

Fill made from recycled polyester fibre, for example from used PET bottles. Choose it where a recycled claim matters, and ask for a certificate rather than a statement.

Cotton, wool and blends

Cotton is thin, low in loft and breathable but tends to shrink more. Wool is light and keeps its loft but needs moth-proof storage and careful washing. Blends sit between.

How to brief a wadding and padding manufacturer in Bangladesh

End use
Jacket, quilt, sleeping bag, pillow, cushion or upholstery. The use sets the fibre, the weight and the fire test, so name it first.
Weight and width
Weight in g/m² and usable width, each with a tolerance, and roll or sheet form. Quote every seller on the same figures.
Thickness at a stated pressure
Loft means little without the load it was measured under. Name the thickness method and pressure, and recovery after compression to ASTM D6571.
Bonding route
Needled, scrim-backed or thermal bonded. Give your quilt pattern too, and let the seller confirm the wadding will hold it.
Fibre and recycled content
Polyester, cotton, wool or a blend, virgin or recycled. Fibre content can be checked by ISO 1833 analysis; a recycled claim needs a certificate.

Tests for wadding and padded goods

EN 17667
Thermal resistance of filled articles such as padded coats and jackets, sleep bags and cot duvets, by small guarded hotplate, from 0.25 to about 5.0 tog.
EN 15586
Fibre-proof rubbing test: the shell fabric is rubbed against the filling that will go into the product. Ask for it on your shell and your wadding, not another pairing.
Global Recycled Standard
Third-party certification of recycled content and chain of custody, with at least 50% recycled content. Textile Exchange is moving to a new standard, so check the scheme and date.
EN 1021-1 and EN 1021-2
Ignitability of upholstery covers and fillings together, by smouldering cigarette and match-flame equivalent. They test the combination, not a finished chair.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100
Harmful substances by product class: class 2 for direct skin contact such as bed linen, class 3 without it, such as jackets. Check the class and article on the certificate.

What moves the price of wadding and padding

  • Fibre: polyester is usually the low-cost fill and wool the dearer one.
  • Weight: more grams per square metre means more fibre in every metre of the roll.
  • Scrim: a stabiliser needled into the batt adds a material and a process step.
  • Recycled claims: GRS needs a third-party audit at each stage of the chain, which the price carries.

Lead times and delivery

Time depends on whether the maker already runs your weight, width and bonding route, on dyed or recycled fibre, and on test rounds such as thermal resistance or fibre-proof results on your shell. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.

Roptan delivers rolls or bales anywhere in Bangladesh, labelled with weight, width and lot, with the packing list, any test reports ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Mildew thrives at about 62 to 93% relative humidity and 25 to 31 °C, normal in the monsoon, so keep wadding wrapped, dry and off the floor.

What we check for this order

  • Weight and thicknessWe have weight per square metre and thickness at the stated pressure checked on rolls from your lot.
  • Fibre-proof against your shellWe ask for an EN 15586 result on your shell with the delivered wadding, and look for fuzz showing through.
  • Recovery and shrinkageWe check recovery after compression and shrinkage after washing on a sample, since cotton and blends tend to shrink more.
  • Fibre and recycled papersWe check the fibre content against the label and report, and that any GRS certificate is current and names the material.

Questions buyers ask

Should I choose thermal-bonded or needle-punched wadding?

Thermal-bonded polyester has a higher loft and is very light, so it suits light, lofty jackets and quilts. Needle-punched wadding is denser and can let fibres work through the shell, so it needs close quilting. A scrim needled into the batt adds strength and allows wider stitch spacing.

How do I compare the warmth of two waddings?

Not by weight alone. Ask for the thermal resistance of the finished panel, shell, wadding and lining together: EN 17667 covers padded coats and jackets, and ISO 11092 measures multilayer assemblies for clothing, quilts and sleeping bags. Then compare offers on that figure.

Can you source recycled polyester wadding?

Yes, where a verified maker holds the certificate. For a recycled claim on your label, ask for a Global Recycled Standard certificate, which needs at least 50% recycled content and an audited chain of custody, and accepts pre-consumer and post-consumer material. A statement alone is not proof.

Does wadding need its own fire test?

It depends on the product. For upholstered seating in Europe, EN 1021-1 and EN 1021-2 test the cover and filling together. For clothing sold in the US, 16 CFR 1610 rates the flammability of clothing textiles, mainly a shell and lining question. Tell us the product and market.

How soon will I hear back about coated and technical textiles?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
