Buying felt in Bangladesh

Felt is a fibre sheet held together without weaving or knitting, either wet felted, where hot water, agitation and pressure hook wool fibres together, or needle punched, where barbed needles tangle the fibres, synthetic and plant fibres included. Industry uses it to damp sound and vibration, filter air, and cushion and pad moving parts, including in vehicles. Buyers in Bangladesh and abroad order it in rolls, sheets or cut parts.

The word covers very different goods, from wool sheet to filter media, papermaking press felt and roofing underlay. So when Roptan asks a felt manufacturer in Bangladesh to quote, we name the kind, fibre, thickness, density and test methods, compare offers on those figures, and check the lot before it leaves.

Kinds of felt

Needle-punched felt

Thousands of barbed needles interlock the fibres of a carded web; punch density, depth and stroke rate set the result. Choose it for synthetic, recycled or plant-fibre felt.

Wool felt

Hot water, agitation and pressure make the scaled fibres of wool or animal hair hook together; plant and synthetic fibres will not wet felt. Choose it where the specification calls for wool.

Moulded acoustic felt

A needled web with bicomponent fibres, heated so it holds a shape. It is used as acoustic liners and anti-vibration parts. Specify density, thickness and an absorption report.

Filter felt

Needle felt for dust-collection bags and cartridges. Choose it by its filtration performance and particle emission under a named test, not by weight and thickness alone.

How to brief a felt manufacturer in Bangladesh

End use
Acoustic lining, filter, cushioning, vibration damping or a vehicle part. The use picks the fibre, density and test, so state it first.
Fibre
Wool, polyester, polypropylene, recycled PET, jute or a blend, with percentages. Claimed wool, jute or recycled content can be checked by ISO 1833 analysis.
Mass and thickness
Mass per unit area to ISO 9073-1 and thickness under a stated pressure to ISO 9073-2. ISO 5084, the general textile method, does not apply to nonwovens.
Density
For acoustic and filter felt, density in kg/m³, with the thickness and pressure it was measured at, since both change absorption.
Strength
Where the felt carries load, tensile in both directions by the strip method (ISO 9073-3) or the grab method (ISO 9073-18).
No grade names
Sellers quote felt grades, but we found no current standard behind them. Specify by fibre, density, thickness and test method.

Tests for felt by end use

EN ISO 354, EN ISO 11654 and EN ISO 10534-2
Sound absorption in a reverberation room, its single-number rating for building absorbers, and the impedance tube at normal incidence. A noise claim should rest on one of these.
ISO 11057
Comparative test of pulse-jet cleanable filter media for dry gas cleaning, giving operating performance and particle emission. Ask for it on filter felt.
FMVSS 302 and ISO 3795
Burn rate of vehicle interior material: FMVSS 302 allows no more than 102 mm per minute; ISO 3795 is the international method, for material up to 13 mm thick.
EN 13501-1
Reaction-to-fire classification of construction products in Europe, for felt used in buildings. The report must cover the same construction and weight.

What moves the price of felt

  • Fibre: wool, recycled and synthetic fibres are different raw materials, and the quote follows the fibre.
  • Mass and density: more fibre per square metre, or per cubic metre, means more material.
  • Thickness: a thicker sheet at the same density uses more fibre.
  • Shaping: a thermoformed part adds a heating and moulding step to the needled web.

Lead times and delivery

Time depends on whether the maker already runs your fibre, density and thickness, on moulded shapes, and on lab reports such as sound absorption, filter or fire tests on your construction. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.

Roptan delivers rolls, sheets or cut parts anywhere in Bangladesh, wrapped and labelled with fibre, thickness, mass per unit area and lot, with the packing list, any test reports ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Each roll or bundle is labelled on its own, so one that measures thin can be traced to its lot and raised with Roptan.

Buying felt for export

For buyers abroad, Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram (Chittagong). Felt is HS heading 5602: needleloom felt under 5602.10, other uncoated felt of wool under 5602.21 and of other fibres under 5602.29. Coated or laminated felt with 50% or less textile by weight, or felt fully embedded in plastic or rubber, goes to Chapter 39 or 40. Your broker confirms the line.

What we check for this order

  • Thickness across the widthWe have mass and thickness at the stated pressure measured at several points across the roll, since needled felt can vary.
  • Fibre contentWhere wool, jute or recycled content is claimed, we ask for ISO 1833 analysis on the lot.
  • A report that fitsWe check the sound, filter or fire report covers the same fibre, thickness and density as your order.
  • Strength both waysWhere felt carries load, we ask for tensile results in both directions on the lot, by the method in the order.

Questions buyers ask

Is felt the same as a nonwoven?

In the trade, felt is a nonwoven and is tested with nonwoven methods. Customs separates them: felt is heading 5602, other nonwovens 5603. Ask for felt to be quoted as felt, with fibre, density and thickness, so the offers line up.

Is felt fire-retardant?

Not as a rule. Natural fibre felt is described as fire-retardant and self-extinguishing, but that is not a rating, and synthetic needle felt needs a report on its own construction and weight: FMVSS 302 for vehicles, EN 13501-1 for buildings. Tell us the end use and market.

Can you supply felt to a grade number?

We source to your figures rather than a grade name. The grade tables sellers quote rest on no current standard we could find, and the old felt test methods have been withdrawn. State fibre, density, thickness at a stated pressure and the test methods.

What should a sound absorption claim come with?

A lab report on the same thickness and density, by EN ISO 354 or the impedance tube method. Fibre type and diameter, thickness, density, bonding and porosity all change absorption, so a result on a different sheet does not carry over to yours.

How soon will I hear back about coated and technical textiles?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
