Buying rubber thread in Bangladesh
Rubber thread is the stretch inside elastic: waistbands, cuffs, socks and narrow knitted or woven tapes. It is round, extruded from latex, or square, cut from rolled rubber, and it is sold bare or covered with polyester, cotton or nylon so it can be attached to clothing or made into knitted, woven or braided elastic. Buyers order it by count, shape and colour; in Bangladesh it is sold mostly to local factories.
A count alone can describe two different threads: listings mix count and diameter, and a square thread pulls harder than a round one of the same count. So when Roptan asks a rubber thread manufacturer in Bangladesh to quote, we ask for the count method, a measured diameter, bare-thread tests and the manufacture date.
How to brief a rubber thread manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Count and diameter
- The count, with the method the seller uses to define it, and the measured diameter (round) or side (square). Listings mix the two, so ask for both.
- Shape and cover
- Round or square, bare or covered, and for covered thread the cover fibre and colour. A change of shape changes the pull at the same count.
- Polymer
- Natural rubber, synthetic rubber or a blend, declared in writing, since buyers of skin-contact goods need to know whether natural latex is present.
- Mechanical limits
- Tensile, elongation at break, stress at a stated elongation and stress retention, with the limits written into your order and tested on the bare thread.
- Age and storage
- The manufacture date and lot on every pack, and the storage the seller follows. ISO 2230 gives guidelines for storing vulcanised rubber products.
Tests and rules for rubber thread
- ASTM D2433
- Test methods for bare rubber thread: density, count, metric yield, tensile, elongation, stress at a set elongation and stress retention. Compare only new threads or threads with the same processing history.
- ISO 20058
- Specification for general purpose rubber thread. It excludes thread for food contact, furniture and high heat or high ozone resistance, so those uses need their own limits.
- ISO 188 and ISO 1431-1
- Accelerated ageing and heat resistance, and resistance to ozone cracking, for vulcanised rubber. Ask for them where thread will meet heat, sun or ozone.
- REACH Annex XVII entry 50
- For EU consumer goods, a rubber part in prolonged or repeated skin contact may not contain more than 1 mg/kg of any listed PAH; for toys and childcare articles, 0.5 mg/kg.
Lead times and delivery
Time depends on whether your count, shape and colour are in stock, on dyeing to a colour standard, on covering, and on test rounds on the bare thread. Stock ships sooner but may be older, so check the manufacture date before you accept it. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.
Roptan delivers thread anywhere in Bangladesh in closed packs, each marked with count, colour, lot and manufacture date, with the packing list, any test reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Store packs closed, out of sun and heat, and use the oldest lot first, since natural rubber is sensitive to ozone cracking.
Questions buyers ask
Should I buy round or square rubber thread?
Round thread is extruded from latex; square thread is cut from a rolled sheet with a slitter. At the same count, square thread has the larger cross-section and the stronger pull, so swapping one for the other changes the elastic. Ask the seller to confirm an equivalent before you switch.
Why does rubber thread lose its stretch?
Natural rubber is damaged by ageing, sunlight, oil and perspiration, and is sensitive to ozone cracking, so old or badly stored thread can lose recovery. Ask for the manufacture date, buy quantities you will use in rotation, and keep packs closed, cool, dark and dry.
Is latex thread a risk for allergy-sensitive users?
It can be. Natural rubber latex contains proteins that cause allergic reactions; vulcanisation reduces them by about 99.9% but does not remove them. For hospital, baby or bandage goods, ask whether the thread is natural or synthetic rubber, and get it declared in writing.
Which customs heading covers rubber thread?
Bare vulcanised rubber thread is heading 4007 and textile-covered thread 5604.10; thread over 5 mm in any cross-section counts as strip or profile under 4008. Elastic tape made with it is classed by construction, woven under 5806.20 or knitted under 6002. Your broker confirms the line.
How soon will I hear back about coated and technical textiles?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
