Buying PVC and PU coated fabric in Bangladesh

Coated fabric is a woven or knitted cloth carrying a layer of polymer. PVC gives a heavy, tough sheet that can be welded, for covers, tarpaulins and tents. PU gives a lighter, softer, washable surface for rainwear, bags and synthetic leather. Buyers in Bangladesh and abroad order it by the roll.

Two quotes for the same weight can hide very different fabrics. When we brief a PVC and PU coated fabric manufacturer in Bangladesh, we set out the base cloth, coating weight and test methods in writing, so offers compare on one basis, then check the lab report on your lot.

Kinds of PVC and PU coated fabric

PVC coated polyester

A polyester scrim, a bonding agent and liquid PVC coats. The scrim carries the load; the coat keeps water out and resists abrasion. Choose it for covers and tents, UV treated for outdoor use.

PVC laminated scrim

A polyester scrim pressed between two PVC films. An open weave bonds through the gaps; a tight weave needs an adhesive. Both are sold as PVC fabric, so ask which is quoted.

PU coated fabric

A thin polyurethane coat on woven or knitted cloth, lighter, softer and washable. Choose it for rainwear, bags and soft goods, with an ageing result, since PU can break down in humid air.

Synthetic leather

PU or PVC layers on a fabric base, often cast on embossed release paper that is peeled off after curing. PU types wash; PVC needs a plasticiser, often a phthalate, to stay soft.

How to brief a PVC and PU coated fabric manufacturer in Bangladesh

Base cloth
Fibre, yarn linear density in warp and weft, ends and picks per unit length, and weave. The base, not the coat, sets tensile and tear strength.
Weight, split three ways
Total, coating and base cloth mass in g/m² to ISO 2286-2, plus width, roll length and thickness at a stated pressure, with tolerances.
Top coat and joining
How the fabric will be joined. A thin acrylic top coat can be welded and repaired; a polyvinyl fluoride film top coat makes the fabric non-weldable.
Water resistance
The hydrostatic method and rate: ISO 1420 is written for coated fabric, ISO 811 for textiles generally. Figures from different methods do not compare.
Sun, damp and cold
Outdoors, a UV-treated grade and xenon-arc weathering to ISO 4892-2; for PU, ageing to ISO 1419; for cold markets, the ISO 4675 bend test.

Tests and chemical rules for coated fabric

ISO 1421 and ISO 4674-1
Tensile by strip or grab method; tear by tongue (method A) or trouser (method B). Methods give different numbers, so name one and test warp and weft.
ISO 2411
Coating adhesion: the bond that prevents delamination and sets seam strength. Ask for the current edition.
ISO 5470-1 or ISO 5470-2
Abrasion of the coated face, by Taber or Martindale. The textile Martindale method, ISO 12947-2, excludes coated and laminated fabric.
REACH Annex XVII entries 51, 63 and 23
For the EU: four phthalates under 0.1% of the plasticised material, lead under 0.1% of the PVC, cadmium under 0.01% of the plastic.
EN 15619 and FMVSS 302
EN 15619 specifies coated fabric for tents. FMVSS 302 caps the burn rate of US vehicle interior material at 102 mm per minute; ISO 3795 is the international method.

What moves the price of PVC and PU coated fabric

  • Coat and base: a heavier coat, or a stronger, denser base cloth, uses more polymer and yarn.
  • Scrim: an open-weave scrim generally costs less than a heavy, tight one.
  • Added properties: UV resistance, colour fastness, mildew resistance and flame retardancy each add cost.
  • Colour: non-standard colours cost more and usually carry a minimum run, as the coater must clear the last colour.

Lead times and delivery

A standard colour on a base cloth the mill already runs is quicker. A non-standard colour usually needs a minimum run, and lab tests add time. Imported fabric from China, common for technical constructions, usually adds about 20 to 30 days of ocean and inland transport. Roptan confirms dates and the minimum in the quote.

Roptan delivers rolls anywhere in Bangladesh, labelled with lot, colour, width and length, with the packing list, the lab report on your lot and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Keep PU coated rolls wrapped, dry and off the floor in the monsoon: moisture drives hydrolysis.

What we check for this order

  • Weight split on the lotWe have total, coating and base cloth weight measured on your lot against the quote.
  • Adhesion and a welded seamWe ask for ISO 2411 adhesion and a welded seam tensile test; the seam should test stronger than the fabric.
  • The right methodsWe check the report names the hydrostatic and tear methods, and ISO 5470 for abrasion, not ISO 12947.
  • Chemical papersFor EU orders we check phthalate, lead and cadmium results, and whether the open-air exemption applies.

Questions buyers ask

Does PVC tarpaulin for Europe have to be phthalate free?

Not always. REACH entry 51 does not apply to articles used only in the open air, or only for industry or agriculture, if no plasticised material touches mucous membranes or stays on skin for long. A truck tarpaulin can qualify; a bag, jacket or seat cover cannot.

Do the new PFAS limits affect coated fabric?

Yes, where the fabric carries a fluorinated water-repellent finish. REACH entry 79 limits PFHxA in clothing, related accessories such as handbags, and footwear for the public from 10 October 2026, and in other consumer textiles from 10 October 2027. Goods placed on the EU market earlier are exempt; construction textiles are excluded.

Why does PU coated fabric break down over time?

Usually through hydrolysis: polyurethane reacts with moisture in the air, the same reason PU shoes left in a cupboard can fail. In a hot, humid climate, ask for an accelerated-ageing result to ISO 1419 on the lot, not a grade name, and store rolls dry.

Is a heavier coated fabric always stronger?

No. Strength comes mainly from the base cloth: yarn denier, tenacity and yarns per inch. A thick coat on a light scrim adds weight, but the scrim carries the load. Ask for coating and base weight apart, and tensile and tear both ways.

How soon will I hear back about coated and technical textiles?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
