Buying vermicelli (semai) in Bangladesh
Semai is a very fine wheat vermicelli, sold plain (flour and water), roasted, or as lachcha, made with oil or ghee, flour, sugar and water. Cooked with milk, ghee, sugar, nuts and spices, it is the sweet now synonymous with Eid in Bangladesh, though it sells all year. Shops, caterers and distributors buy it, and importers usually stock it before Ramadan.
Chattogram traders describe most semai factories as seasonal: they gear up before Ramadan and run hardest just before Eid, when quality stock is reported to run short. A vermicelli (semai) manufacturer in Bangladesh also needs a BSTI licence for the right line. Roptan books verified plants early, sees how the strands are dried and has moisture and fat tested.
How to brief a vermicelli (semai) manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Kind and fat
- Plain, roasted or lachcha. For lachcha, name the fat (ghee, banaspati or an oil): banaspati or shortening makes a trans fat result essential.
- Strand diameter and cut
- Give the diameter in millimetres and the cut length. Vermicelli means different widths in different markets, so the word alone is not a specification.
- Flour and inputs
- Maida, atta, suji, refined sugar, ghee and banaspati are all on BSTI's mandatory list. Ask which the recipe uses and for the input suppliers' licences.
- Drying and moisture
- Ask how and where the strands are dried, since open drying can stall in monsoon rain. Set a moisture maximum and ask for the result on your lot.
- Colour, pack and label
- Roast colour from roasting alone, no added colour; pouch weight and pouches per carton; wheat on the label, plus milk and nuts in a dessert mix.
Standards and papers for semai
- BDS 384:2017
- BSTI's mandatory standard for macaroni, spaghetti and vermicelli, so plain semai needs a licence under it. Ask which line covers a roasted pack.
- BDS 1620:2000 for lachcha
- BSTI's separate mandatory standard for lachcha semai, amended in 2020. Check that the licence names lachcha, not only vermicelli.
- Trans fat, S.R.O. 332-Law/2021
- Since 31 December 2022, foods and fats may carry no more than 2 g of industrial trans fat per 100 g of total fat. It applies to the fat in lachcha.
- Labels in Bangladesh
- The Packaged Food Labelling Regulations 2017 are in force; BFSA's 2026 labelling rule is still a draft.
- 21 CFR 139.110 (US)
- Defines vermicelli as cord-shaped and no more than 0.06 inch (about 1.5 mm) across, for US sales only. An amendment published on 13 October 2026 may change it.
Lead times and delivery
Semai lines are seasonal. One Chattogram maker described preparing before Ramadan and running in full swing 10 to 12 days before Eid, so late orders meet full lines. Private label adds printed film and sample approval; export adds lab tests and shipping time. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh, Roptan delivers semai by the carton to distributors, shops and caterers, or in bulk for repacking. The wholesale trade often counts semai by the basket or bucket, so we fix carton weight and count in the order. Each delivery carries batch codes, your lab reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying vermicelli (semai) for export
Vermicelli is a Ramadan food across South Asia, so importers usually stock it before the fast. EPB records dry vermicelli under the pasta heading; the UK tariff splits uncooked pasta by whether it contains common wheat flour, so your broker confirms the code. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram.
Questions buyers ask
What is the difference between plain and lachcha semai?
Plain semai is flour and water dried into fine strands; lachcha is made with oil or ghee, flour, sugar and water. BSTI has a standard for each, BDS 384:2017 and BDS 1620:2000, and the fat in lachcha brings in the trans fat limit.
When should we order semai for Eid 2027?
Early. Ramadan 2027 is expected from about 8 February to 8 March, with Eid al-Fitr around 9 March, subject to moon sighting. Place the order and approve samples by the end of 2026 or in the first weeks of 2027, and earlier for export.
How thin is semai?
There is no single measure. Italian vermicelli is 2.08 to 2.14 mm across, in English-speaking markets it is usually thinner than spaghetti, and US rules cap it at 0.06 inch. Semai is a very fine strand, so give the diameter in millimetres.
Can semai be made in the monsoon?
Yes, but drying is the weak point. In June 2018 heavy rain held up vermicelli production in Barishal, and wet weather usually stretches drying and raises moisture in the strand. Ask how the plant dries in the rain and for a moisture result.
How soon will I hear back about noodles and snacks?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
