Buying turtlenecks in Bangladesh

A turtleneck is a sweater with a close-fitting collar that covers the neck: a folded roll in the full version, a tube sewn to the neckline at both ends in the mock. Polo neck and roll-neck are other names. Importers buy turtlenecks as autumn and winter layering knits, and lighter versions now sell for longer. Most of Bangladesh's sweater exports are cotton or man-made fibre.

The collar decides a turtleneck: a separate rib piece that has to pass over the head, sit close and match the body's shade. Roptan briefs a verified seller that knits your collar style, approves the collar on the sample, and checks the collar, shade and fibre papers on the bulk.

Kinds of turtleneck

Roll-neck turtlenecks

The full turtleneck: a tall rib collar folded over on itself to cover the neck. Choose it for winter layering, and state the collar height unfolded.

Mock turtlenecks

Both ends of the collar tube are sewn to the neckline, so it keeps the look of a fold and clings smoothly. It is simpler to make and takes a zip well.

Funnel necks

The body itself rises high and close to the neck, knitted in one piece with the torso instead of an added rib collar. Choose it for a clean, structured line.

Cotton and acrylic turtlenecks

Cotton and man-made fibre make up most of Bangladesh's sweater exports. Choose them for easy-care layering knits; some acrylic qualities pill easily, so ask for a low-pilling yarn and a pilling test.

Wool and cashmere turtlenecks

A small part of Bangladesh's sweater exports, with strict label rules: in the EU 'wool' means fibre from sheep's or lambs' fleece, and cashmere content is measured by microscopy. Budget for a fibre test.

How to brief a turtleneck manufacturer in Bangladesh

Collar style and rib
Roll, mock or funnel, and the collar height. Choose 1x1 or 2x2 rib: 1x1 is the more elastic, which suits a collar that must pass over the head.
Neck measurements
Give the front neck drop and the neck opening you expect, and approve both on a sample. Sizes are set on templates at steam pressing, so measure pressed pieces.
Fibre wording
Fibre blend and count. Under EU rules 'wool' means sheep's or lambs' fleece, and 'virgin wool' only fibre never used in a finished product before.
Gauge and weight
Gauge in needles per inch, a higher number giving a finer knit, and the approved sample weight per size, from which the yarn is costed.
Collar shade
The collar is knitted on its own machines, so require the body's yarn lot for it and approve a lab dip from your swatch or a colour reference number.

Tests and certificates for turtlenecks

ISO 17751-1, ISO 17751-2 and ISO 1833-1
Identify and quantify cashmere, wool and other speciality animal fibres by light or scanning electron microscopy; ISO 1833-1 sets the general method for chemical analysis of blends.
ISO 12945-2
Pilling by the modified Martindale method. Pilling starts where wear rubs most, such as the collar, so test the collar rib yarn as well as the body.
Responsible Wool Standard
Requires every site from wool farm to the final business-to-business seller to be certified. Textile Exchange is moving it into the Materials Matter Standard, effective 31 December 2026 and mandatory from 31 December 2027.

What moves the price of a turtleneck

  • Yarn: the yarn line is the yarn price times garment weight plus wastage, so the fibre choice shows directly in the quote.
  • Collar: a tall rib collar is a separate knitted piece, and rib pulls in, needing more stitches and yarn than plain knit.
  • Testing: fibre analysis for wool or cashmere claims adds a lab line to the quote.
  • Finishing and trims: washing, zips on mock necks, labels and packing are each costed as separate lines.

Lead times and delivery

Timing runs from approvals: a lab dip for the shade, then a sample on which you approve weight, collar height and the fit over the head. The collar is knitted on its own machines from the body's yarn lot, so book that lot for both. For wool or cashmere wording, allow time for a fibre test on the bulk yarn before labels are printed. Roptan confirms sample and bulk dates and the minimum order in the quote.

Turtlenecks are steam pressed to size, then folded, tagged and bagged. Inside Bangladesh, Roptan hands them over with a packing list, inspection report and Mushak 6.3 VAT invoice. Keep wool and cashmere dry: through the June to September monsoon, stored textiles can take up damp and may mould, and moth larvae feed on wool.

Buying turtlenecks for export

Turtlenecks fall under HS heading 6110, split by fibre: 6110.20 cotton, 6110.30 man-made fibres, 6110.11 wool and 6110.12 cashmere. Quotes are FOB Chattogram, with a commercial invoice stating composition, packing list, bill of lading, origin papers and any fibre test report.

What we check for this order

  • Collar fit on the sampleWe check that the collar passes over the head for each size and sits close again, before the bulk is approved.
  • Collar shadeWe compare the collar with the body side by side, as the collar is knitted on separate machines.
  • Fibre report against the labelFor wool or cashmere claims we match the fibre test on the bulk yarn to the label wording before labels are printed.
  • Final AQL inspectionRandom sampling to ISO 2859-1, usually AQL 2.5 major and 4.0 minor, with collar height and neck drop measured on sampled pieces.

Questions buyers ask

Is a polo neck the same as a turtleneck?

Yes. Turtleneck is the North American name; polo neck, roll-neck and skivvy are others. All mean a close-fitting collar that folds over and covers the neck. A mock turtleneck is different: both ends of its collar tube are sewn to the neckline, so it looks folded but cannot be turned down.

Can a cashmere blend be sold as cashmere?

Only as a blend. Under Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011 each fibre is listed by name and percentage by weight, and '100 %' is allowed only for a single fibre, with up to 2 percent unavoidable stray fibre. Cashmere content is checked by microscopy under ISO 17751, so test the bulk yarn first.

Will a wool turtleneck shrink in the wash?

Untreated wool can felt and shrink when a machine agitates it. Finishing treatments can reduce felting and improve machine washability. If the care label says machine wash, ask for dimensional change results to ISO 5077, run on that ISO 6330 programme.

Does the UK code a turtleneck differently?

It can. Below HS 6110, the UK tariff has a national line for lightweight fine knit roll, polo or turtleneck jumpers and pullovers, in cotton and in man-made fibres. Your broker confirms whether a style counts as lightweight fine knit.

How soon will I hear back about sweaters and knitwear?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
