Buying toast and rusk in Bangladesh

A rusk is bread, or cake, baked, sliced and baked again until hard and dry. In Bangladesh bread rusk is usually called toast or toast biscuit, and cake rusk is called dry cake. Both are served with tea at home, in offices and in shops, and both are exported: rusks and toasted bread have their own HS line, 1905.40.

Buyers use 'toast', 'rusk' and 'dry cake' loosely. A toast and rusk manufacturer in Bangladesh should be told the route, base and flavour, so Roptan confirms those first, sources from verified plants and checks colour, moisture and breakage before the order moves.

Kinds of toast and rusk

Plain bread rusk

Bread baked, sliced and baked again until dry and crisp: the toast biscuit of Bangladesh. Choose it for plain tea-time toast and for buyers who dip it in tea.

Sugar toast

Bread rusk with a sweet finish, sold in Bangladesh beside plain and ghee toast. Choose it for a sweeter pack, and say how the sugar is added, since it changes moisture and colour.

Ghee toast

Bread rusk flavoured with ghee. Choose it for a richer local taste, and note that ghee is milk fat, so the label must declare milk.

Garlic toast

A savoury bread rusk flavoured with garlic. Choose it for snack ranges, and keep it apart from sweet flavours in the brief and the carton marks.

Dry cake (cake rusk)

Sponge or yellow cake baked, sliced and baked again, made from wheat flour, sugar, fat, a leavening agent and often egg. Choose it for a lighter, sweeter rusk, and declare egg where used.

How to specify toast and rusk

Route and base
Bread rusk or cake rusk, and the base recipe. Send a sample, since the same word means different products to different plants.
Slice size
Slice length, width and thickness in millimetres, and pieces per pack. Thickness changes the second bake, the colour and the breakage.
Final moisture
A target in percent with a tolerance. Rusk keeps because it is dry, but hard biscuits still soften as they take up moisture.
Colour range
A light and a dark limit on the approved sample. The second bake sets the colour, and a darker rusk usually carries more acrylamide.
Flavour coating
Sugar, ghee, garlic or cardamom, and how it is applied. Ask for the coating's water activity as well, since moisture moves into the drier rusk.
Breakage and pack
The share of broken pieces you accept, the film barrier and the carton strength. Rusk is brittle, so the pack protects it.

Licences, rules and tests for toast and rusk

BSTI licence
BSTI's mandatory list has rows for bread (BDS 382:2016), biscuits (BDS 383:2001) and cakes, but none named toast or rusk. Ask which licence covers the product and see the certificate.
Regulation (EU) 2017/2158
Names rusks among the fine bakery wares it covers. It sets acrylamide mitigation steps and benchmark levels, which are not legal limits but EU importers ask for results.
Infant rusks
Rusks for infants and young children have a separate, lower acrylamide benchmark under the same EU regulation, and infant food rules apply as well.
FSSC 22000 or ISO 22000
Food safety certificates for the plant. FSSC 22000 builds on ISO 22000 and is GFSI approved; check that the scope names rusk or bakery products.

What moves the price of toast and rusk

  • Route: dry cake uses sugar, fat and often egg, a richer recipe than plain bread rusk.
  • Two bakes: every rusk is baked twice, so oven time is part of the cost.
  • Flavour: ghee, garlic and sugar coatings add an ingredient and a step.
  • Fat quality: a cheaper, more oxidised fat lowers the price but shortens shelf life.
  • Pack: rusk breaks easily, so trays, stronger film and cartons cost more but save stock.

Lead times and delivery

A plant's own toast in its own pack moves fastest. A new flavour or slice size needs trial bakes, and private label adds artwork, printed film and a pre-production sample. Export lab tests add time. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum per flavour in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh Roptan delivers by the carton or the truckload to distributors, shops, hotels and office canteens, with batch codes and expiry dates on every carton, lab reports where ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Broken pieces found on arrival are counted against the agreed limit.

Buying toast and rusk for export

Rusks and toasted bread have an HS line of their own, 1905.40, so a customs broker can declare them without doubt. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram or CFR, with the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and the lab reports your market asks for. EU buyers usually want acrylamide results for rusks, and a US importer must verify the plant's preventive controls under the Food Safety Modernization Act.

What we check for this order

  • Which product you meanWe confirm in writing whether the order is bread toast, dry cake or another rusk, with the base recipe.
  • Colour and moistureWe compare packed rusk with the agreed colour limits and check the moisture result before dispatch.
  • Breakage countWe count broken pieces in sample packs against your limit, since rusk breaks in packing and transit.
  • Allergens by flavourWe check the label declares milk for ghee toast, egg for dry cake where used, and wheat in every flavour.

Questions buyers ask

Is dry cake the same as toast?

No. Toast, or toast biscuit, is bread that is baked, sliced and baked again. Dry cake is cake rusk: a sponge or yellow cake baked, sliced and dried in a second bake. The recipes, allergens and bake differ, so name the one you want or send a sample.

A UK customer asked for rusk. Is it the same product?

Not always. In the UK 'rusk' also names butcher rusk, a dry biscuit crumb sold to butchers for sausages, and the word is also used for baby teething rusks. Confirm the use before quoting, because a crumb for food makers is a different product from toast for tea.

Can you source rusks for babies?

Only with care. Rusks for infants and young children are held to a separate, lower EU acrylamide benchmark and to infant food rules. Tell us the market and age group, and we check whether a plant can meet those rules before quoting.

How do I keep rusk from breaking in transit?

Agree a breakage limit, a slice thickness and a pack that protects the pieces: a tray or a tight stack in barrier film, in a carton strong enough for the stacking height. We count broken pieces in sample packs before dispatch.

How soon will I hear back about biscuits and bakery?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
