Buying crackers in Bangladesh
Crackers are thin savoury biscuits with a crisp, open texture, usually from a leavened, laminated dough that rises early in the bake. They are eaten with tea, with spreads or as a snack. Distributors, shops, offices and caterers in Bangladesh buy them, and savoury flavoured crackers also sell in the Gulf.
Cracker names travel badly: soda, cream and snack crackers each come from a different dough. A cracker manufacturer in Bangladesh needs the dough route, salt, fat and finish in writing, so Roptan pins those down, sources from verified plants that run that dough, and checks moisture, colour and breakage before dispatch.
What to tell a cracker manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Dough route
- Yeast-fermented or chemically leavened, with or without creamed fat. The route sets texture and flavour, so name it or send a sample.
- Layering and thickness
- Laminated layers and finished thickness in millimetres. They set the open texture and how easily the cracker breaks.
- Docking
- The pattern of holes pressed into the dough. Docking stops large air pockets in the bake and gives the cracker its look.
- Final moisture
- A target in percent with a tolerance. Crackers usually leave the oven at about 1.5 to 2.5 percent water, which keeps them crisp.
- Salt and fat
- Grams per 100 g of each, for the nutrition label, plus the fat type, hydrogenated or not.
- Toppings
- Salt, seeds, herbs or cheese on top or in the dough. Cheese adds milk and seeds may add sesame, both declared on the label.
Licences, rules and tests for crackers
- BSTI certification
- BSTI's mandatory list has a row for biscuits (BDS 383:2001) and another for chips and crackers (BDS 1556:2017). Ask which standard the plant's CM licence names for your cracker.
- Regulation (EU) 2017/2158
- Names crackers, defined as dry biscuits, in its scope and gives them their own benchmark level. Benchmark levels are not legal limits, but EU importers ask for acrylamide results.
- Regulation (EU) 2019/649
- Caps industrial trans fat at 2 g per 100 g of fat in EU food for the final consumer. Hydrogenated shortening is the main source, so ask for a lab report.
- Sesame and allergen labels
- Sesame is a mandatory allergen in both the EU and the US, where it became the ninth from 1 January 2023. Seeded crackers must declare it.
Lead times and delivery
A plant's own cracker in its own pack moves fastest. A new seasoning or shape needs trial bakes and approval, and private label adds artwork, printed film and a pre-production sample. Export lab tests add time. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum per item in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh Roptan delivers by the carton or the truckload to distributors, shops, offices, hotels and caterers, with batch codes and expiry dates on every carton, lab reports where ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Crushed packs found on arrival are counted and taken up with the seller.
Buying crackers for export
Savoury flavoured crackers from Bangladesh already sell in the Gulf. Crackers have no HS line of their own: they are classed under HS 1905.90, or 1905.31 if sweetened, so your customs broker confirms the line before the first shipment. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram or CFR, with the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and the acrylamide and trans fat results that EU buyers usually ask for.
Questions buyers ask
Does a cream cracker contain cream?
No. The name refers to the way the mixture is creamed during manufacture, not to cream as an ingredient. A cream cracker is usually made from wheat flour, vegetable oil and yeast. Read the ingredient list on the approved sample for allergens all the same.
What is the difference between a soda and a cream cracker?
Both usually come from a yeast-fermented dough. A soda cracker has little or no added sugar and low fat, and saltines carry coarse salt on top. A cream cracker uses creamed fat and is usually square and docked. Send a sample of the one you want.
Why do crackers have holes in them?
The holes come from docking: holes pressed into the dough before baking. They stop large air pockets forming as the cracker rises in the oven, so it bakes flat and even. The dock pattern is also part of how the cracker looks, so approve it on the sample.
Do crackers for the EU need acrylamide tests?
Regulation (EU) 2017/2158 names crackers and gives them a benchmark level of their own. It is not a legal limit, but EU importers usually ask for results. A lighter colour, optimised dough moisture and a lower oven temperature with a longer bake usually reduce acrylamide.
How soon will I hear back about biscuits and bakery?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
