Buying slip-ons in Bangladesh

A slip-on is a low shoe with no laces. In the side-goring type, elastic inserts let it come off easily yet stay snug on the foot. As a sneaker it usually has a canvas or knit upper on a rubber sole, often vulcanised with a foxing band. The loafer, a moccasin-style shoe, is a different product.

With no lace to take up slack, the last, the cut and the elastic do all the work, so a slip-on that runs loose in one size runs loose for every buyer of that size. A slip-on manufacturer in Bangladesh is judged on fit, so Roptan approves several sizes before bulk, checks the gores and inspects the pairs.

Kinds of slip-on

Side-gore slip-ons

Elastic inserts in the sides of the upper open as the foot goes in and pull the shoe snug once it is on. Choose them when easy on and off matters, and specify the gore.

Canvas slip-ons on vulcanised soles

A canvas upper joined to the outsole by a foxing band, cured with heat and pressure. Choose it for the flat, flexible classic look with the rubber edge showing.

Knit slip-ons

A knitted upper, often from polyester yarn, with a stretch collar or elastic panels. Choose it for a knitted look, and name the yarn in the brief.

Kids' slip-ons

Smaller sizes of the same build. For US sales, shoes for children up to and including age 12 need lead tests on their materials, so plan them into the order.

How to specify a slip-on

Upper
Canvas weight and colour, or knit yarn and colour, for each colourway, with a physical colour standard.
Gores or collar
Number, width in mm, colour and position of the elastic gores, or the type of stretch collar. Send a reference shoe if you have one.
Elastic recovery check
No standard test for gore recovery was found, so write your own into the order: how far to stretch in mm, how many times, and the length in mm it must return to.
Sole
Vulcanised with a foxing band, or a cemented sole unit, with rubber colour and tread.
Size system and fit
One system, EU, UK, US or Mondopoint (foot length in mm), with the run and pairs per size. Approve fit in the smallest, a middle and the largest size.
Market
The chemical list follows the market: REACH for the EU, lead tests for US children's sizes.

Tests and rules for slip-ons

ISO 17708:2018
Whole-shoe upper and sole adhesion for vulcanised, cemented and moulded shoes, with ageing conditions for production control.
ISO 17707:2005
Outsole flex resistance as cut growth, for outsoles up to 30 N longitudinal rigidity. A flat, flexible slip-on sole bends at every step.
ISO 20871:2018
Outsole abrasion for any sole material. Write the pass value into the order.
REACH Annex XVII entries 50 and 72
For the EU. Entry 50 limits eight PAHs in rubber and plastic parts touching the skin; entry 72, from November 2020, limits 33 CMR substances in footwear.

What moves the price of a slip-on

  • Upper: canvas, knit and synthetic uppers differ in material and steps; overlays and linings add more.
  • Gores: two gores per shoe instead of one, or a printed or colour-matched elastic, add parts and matching.
  • Sole: an existing sole from the maker's range avoids new moulds in every size.
  • Colourways: each needs its own upper, elastic and rubber match, approval and tests.
  • Tests: elastic checks, sole tests and chemical tests per material and colour each add a lab line.

Lead times and delivery

Roptan publishes no standard figure, because the time depends on the order. Extra fit rounds, colour-matched elastic, a new sole mould and lab tests for each material and colour add time; a stock sole, stock elastic and fewer colourways shorten it. Roptan confirms the sample date, the bulk date and the minimum per colourway in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh, Roptan delivers to your warehouse or shops in cartons packed by size and colourway, with the packing list, the test and inspection reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). The final check samples the lot to ISO 2859-1 at an AQL written into the order.

Buying slip-ons for export

Canvas and knit slip-ons on rubber soles are textile-upper footwear under HS heading 6404; customs decides the sub-line. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram, with a REX origin statement for EU GSP or UK DCTS papers and the test reports. On EPB data, non-leather footwear exports grew about 120% in the decade to FY2024, with most producers selling mainly to the EU.

What we check for this order

  • Fit in several sizesFit approved in the smallest, a middle and the largest size before bulk, since nothing can be tightened on the foot.
  • Gore recovery to your testThe elastic stretched and released as written in the order, on bulk pairs, with the lengths recorded.
  • Bond on bulk pairsUpper and sole adhesion to ISO 17708 on pairs from the bulk, not only on the approved sample.
  • Licence, ERC and auditsTrade licence and Export Registration Certificate in the name on the quote, and any BSCI, SMETA or WRAP audit in date.

Questions buyers ask

Is a slip-on the same as a loafer?

No. Both are laceless, but a loafer is a moccasin-style shoe and not a sneaker. A sneaker slip-on is a canvas or knit upper on a rubber sole, held by elastic gores or a stretch collar. Use the right word in the brief so the maker samples the right shoe.

Is there a standard test for elastic gores?

None was found for slip-on gores. Write your own check into the order: stretch the gore by a set length a set number of times, then measure how far it returns. Ask for it on the sample and again on bulk pairs.

Canvas or knit: which is better for a slip-on?

Neither is better in general. Canvas on a vulcanised sole gives the flat, classic shoe with a rubber edge. Knit gives a different, textile look from collar to toe. Choose by the look you need, then name the canvas weight or the yarn.

How do we get the fit right across sizes?

Give one size system and the full run, then approve fit in at least three sizes: the smallest, a middle and the largest. A slip-on has no lace to fix a loose heel, so a fault in one size repeats in every pair of that size.

How soon will I hear back about sneakers and sports shoes?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
