Buying kids' sneakers in Bangladesh
Kids' sneakers are canvas, knit or textile shoes on rubber or EVA soles, made in children's sizes. The rules are stricter than for adult shoes: in the US, footwear for children up to and including 12 years is a children's product, with lead limits and a certificate before it can be sold.
Most of the work in a kids' order is paperwork that has to match the pairs: a test for each material, a certificate built on those tests, a size run that fits small feet. A kids' sneakers manufacturer in Bangladesh should already test this way, so Roptan checks the reports against your materials before bulk and inspects the pairs before they ship.
How to specify a kids' sneaker
- Age and market
- The age the shoe is for and every market it is sold in. In the US, under 13 means a children's product, with its own tests and certificate.
- Size run by foot length
- Give the smallest and largest size as foot length in mm (Mondopoint), plus the system on the label and pairs per size.
- Bill of materials
- Every textile, polymer, metal eyelet, print and paint by part and colour. Each type of material is tested for lead separately, so the list sets the test plan.
- Sole
- Rubber, EVA or both, with colours. Black rubber usually carries more PAH risk, because carbon black pigment can contain PAHs.
- Chemical list for the EU
- REACH Annex XVII tests on rubber, plastic and textile parts, listed in the order with pass values.
Rules and tests for kids' sneakers
- CPSIA lead limits (US)
- Footwear for children up to and including 12 years: no more than 100 ppm total lead in accessible substrates and 90 ppm in paint and surface coatings.
- Children's Product Certificate (US)
- The certificate that shows a children's product meets the rules, based on test results from a CPSC-accepted third-party laboratory.
- CPSIA phthalate limits
- These cover toys and childcare articles, not footwear specifically. Some buyers still test young children's shoes that may go in the mouth, as due diligence.
- REACH Annex XVII entries 50 and 72
- For the EU. Entry 50 limits eight PAHs in rubber and plastic parts touching the skin; entry 72, from November 2020, limits 33 CMR substances in footwear.
Lead times and delivery
Roptan publishes no standard figure, because the time depends on the order. Lab tests on every material and colour, a new sole mould for a wide size run, extra fit rounds and the certificate itself add time; stock soles and fewer materials shorten it. Roptan confirms the sample date, the bulk date and the minimum per colourway in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh, Roptan delivers to your warehouse or shops in cartons packed by size and colourway, with the packing list, the lab and inspection reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). The final check samples the lot to ISO 2859-1 at an AQL written into the order.
Buying kids' sneakers for export
Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram, with a REX origin statement for EU GSP or UK DCTS papers, the lab reports and, for the US, the test basis for your Children's Product Certificate. Textile-upper kids' sneakers sit under HS heading 6404. Moulded shoes with rubber or plastic uppers are a different line, HS 6402, so give customs the right description.
Questions buyers ask
Which kids' shoes count as children's products in the US?
Footwear for children up to and including 12 years of age. These shoes must meet the lead limits of 100 ppm in accessible materials and 90 ppm in paint and coatings, shown by a Children's Product Certificate based on tests from a CPSC-accepted third-party lab.
What happens if a US shipment lacks the right tests?
The certificate must rest on results from an accepted third-party lab. Without them, goods can be delayed or seized at US ports. Plan tests for every textile, polymer, metal eyelet and paint before bulk, and keep the reports with the certificate.
Do kids' sneakers need phthalate tests?
Not under the CPSIA as a footwear rule: its phthalate limits cover toys and childcare articles. Some buyers still test shoes for young children that may be put in the mouth, as due diligence, and some US states have their own rules. For the EU, REACH applies.
How should we size a kids' range?
By foot length. Give the smallest and largest size in mm, the size system printed on the label and pairs per size. EU, UK, US and Mondopoint sizes count differently and do not convert by one formula, so pick one system for the order.
How soon will I hear back about sneakers and sports shoes?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
